  1. Thats it in a nut shell - you've done the things that free up the easiest horses to find. Only thing left to do is up the boost. But again, you should exercise caution. Many people run upto and beyond 14psi on stock tubs (1bar). But if the injectors aren't uprated then you could have detonation issues again, from the engine running too lean at the top rpm. Best thing is a moderate increase in boost coupled with some uprated SMICs. Make sure that you get it mapped safely once you've fitted the boost controller and you should be getting around 400 bhp - how long it will last is anyone's guess. First things first - get the car thoroughly checked over by a specialist.
  2. I looked into this and decided not to do it.. It looks like an easy way to boost power - but as stated, the effects of Nos on an improperly prepared engine can be catastrophic. If you want to run nos you will need to fit forged pistons and lower the compression ratio with thicker gaskets. If you don't then you run the risk of detonation - melted pistons. Then you have to choose which method of injection you want (wet, dry, ported etc). Then consider how much power you are looking for. 100hp nitrous kits deliver 100hp instantly - it doesn't build boost like a turbo, its just suddenly there (power graph goes vertical). Which is fine for track applications but not so great on a public road. I was looking for another 50hp for as cheap as poss. In the end I decided I'd have to rent the girlfriend out and save enough money to do the job properly. Nitrous can be run on these engines, but to do it safely you still need to spend a lot of money.
  3. I agree with the vast majority of what you said, but.. I wear shorts to work - does this mean I am not a man? Not everyone works in an office! Secondly, are you insinuating that people wearing the burkha outside, should take it off before they come inside? :scared: Lastly (I couldn't agree more with this) - us Brits are very tolerant, compared with other countries, in terms of accepting other races and religions - perhaps too much so. I don't mind foriegners - my girlfriend is from Slovakia - but I do object to how some groups segregate themselves rather than intergrating into our society. I say we should start our own political party (free road tax on classic nissans for starters!) and I vote Richard as party leader (hope you have a scandal free past Richard, don't want to hear any more stories about women's footprints on the windscreen of the Merc now!!) and Hollowpoint as deputy! First on the agend: let's bring back :hang: (I will take care of the ministry of justice LOL)
  4. Excellent, So this probably means my car has been front-ended at some point! How pleased I am! Anyone else with a '95 spec car felt the weight of their bonnet recently? Or am I the unlucky soul who has the only steel bonnet? Anyone got an early series aluminium bonnet lying around??
  5. Not so my friend! Don't know if they changed the material for steel in the mid nineties. But given all the tight-arse measures taken to save money (no boost gauge FFS) on the mid nineties model it wouldn't surprise me. My bonnet is steel - not aluminium - I can also tell you it is very heavy! put your fingers on the slam panel and I'll drop it from 20cm if you don't believe me! It is at least 20 kilos, more like 25.. Also, a carbon fibre bonnet IS lighter than aluminium - if they are the same design. If this is not the case, then I will gladly empty all my pockets of fluff and give that to you!
  6. Why? Why why why why, WHY? Why would you want to do that? This is clear evidence that the world is over populated with morons :gun_bandana: I'm actually getting angry.. [reaches for medication, grabs handful of pills and crunches loudly]
  7. I know what you're getting at Richard and TBH I agree. Children should be beaten within a inch of their life, even for trivial breaches of rules. That way they would grow up with the fear of god, should they step out of line. Not like the little scrotes who live down my street who try to burgle your house one week, then flick you the bird the next.. (yes, really). Thing is though, I actually think that kid will probably be a good 'en so to speak - he might not be as macho as some of our forum members, but I can't see him spending time at her majesty's pleasure either (ok, its a bit early to judge maybe). In my world, we should still have the cane and capital punishment. Step out of line and you get squashed. Next time, you don't step out of line. I would also sterilise the long term unemployed. I would bring back public floggings of rapists and murderers. Not to mention the inventive forms of torture I have conjured up for Peados (rusty spoons anyone?). As you can see. My world is a very dark place, which is why people more moderate than I are in control. Freedom to express an opinion and to air one's view is paramount in our culture - the only problem is we try and listen to everyone (human rights for terrorists FFS!). I don't think we should take what happened out of context. The school will review its policy next year and the governers will vote in favour of no change. The lad who wore a skirt for a few days (until he got totally pissed off with everyone calling him a bender) will be forgotten about. And really - it won't make the slightest bit of difference. Discipline, for disciplines sake is probably best left to my imagination and not in the real world.
  8. Reminds me of the Harry Enfield show.. "Let's off-road!"... "Oh, wait a minute, we're stuck..." and so on - quality!! Actually thought the orange one was a defender 90 for a bit - looks quite butch in that 1st pic. Looks like great fun! How did the mud taste?
  9. no its not normal - sounds like safety boost which should be about 7psi (0.5 bar) - it should actually be about 9psi. Have you had your car checked on conzult by anyone?
  10. I think the point a lot of people will miss is that with a car this age the mileage is not so important anyway. Even 'IF' it has only done 14,000 miles all the hoses could be perished, all the rubber o rings perished, the original set of tyres it left the factory on will be... PERISHED.. You get my point. Its not the mileage, its the age of the car thats most important now. He should have advertised it a projest car. If the car was garaged and used in fair weather then it really could be a minter - structurally. In my experience, its always better to use a car daily than have it sat for long periods of time. That car wouldn't have had a major service yet - but would you want to trust those timing belts? I wouldn't Still a nice car though and I hope they get a solid 5 grand for it - he knows he won't get asking price - but set your stall out early, an all that.. Good luck to him I say :thumbup1:
  11. I often wondered if the 1560kgs that is often stated in magazine stats was the actual weight, or the manufacturers 'dry weight. The car could weigh 1560 but factor in a tank of fuel and a few vital fluids and it soon adds up. Ferrari are known for quoting dry weights rather than actual on the road weight. I think the TT is too heavy really, but I'm not prepared to start stripping things off in the hope of saving a hundred Kgs - I'd rather just make the missus get out and walk!! :whistling: the a/c system probably weighs about 15kgs all in including the pump. the hicas system would probably save another 20-25kgs cruise control doesn't weigh anything really, apart from a switch and a couple of circuit boards the bonnet weighs about 25kgs - but you will need this! A carbon bonnet will weigh less than 5kg (proper one) I would recommend keeping the electrics - I've heard pedalling a zed is hard work! Unless you want to remove the eletric motors from the doors and wing mirrors etc. You could also replace the rear windows with plastic ones, remove the spare tyre and carry a can of get-you-home foam. Ditch the tools cos you no longer have the spare. Only half filling the tank with petrol will save an easy 30kgs. Removing the rear interior another 30-40kgs. Chuck the fag lighter away will save you 78gms! When you're driving a bare shell around you'd probably wish you'd just left it the way it was. Best thing to do is shed 10kgs by taking the targas out and going for a blast to use up some ever-so-heavy petrol!
  12. I think you have all forgotten the Ford Granada 2.8i Ghia X Estate - obviously the sensible man's choice! :punk:
  13. Glad to see you've found something genuinely news worthy after criticising the Mail's story about the boy who wore the skirt! :whistling:
  14. Yo yo yo, Honda bad boy massive out in their incy wincy 1.8's. If the camera quality was any better you see that actually (despite changing gear 5 times) they are actually still only doing 80mph!! As rude boy as these vids are - it does make for quite a spectacle. I can't advocate driving like that anymore - but I'm pretty sure I used to drive like that on the little country lanes near me, when I was 17. I didn't have a Honda, but watching those - I wish I had! Watching those made me realise just how many risks you're prepared to take when behind the wheel - yet we wouldn't play russian roulette. Odd really, what happens to, particularly, male minds once they have a wheel in their hands.. Good find though - can't wait to see the sequal - Race To The Hospital
  15. Hmmm, I smell trouble! Good luck on your purchase bud - the cheapest zed to run, is the most expensive to buy. You don't want to buy something that sits on your drive collecting bird crap all day. That said, there are no guarantees - you could be lucky and find a well cared for car - or not.. Trying to find a standard Zed is pretty difficult - but buying a modded one will save you shelling out for the basic mods. If well maintained then I think its fair to say, they can be pretty reliable cars. You will probably think you've got a leak from the petrol tank though! If your astra was managing mid twenties, then like Vodkashots says - expect high single figures fuel wise. Or just push a little more gently with your right foot (like that's gonna happen - lol). Good luck with the search - take your time and find the right car. Too many people have tails of woe on this site - which is a shame, because the Zed is a magnificent sports tourer. You will not be disappointed. Use the members on this forum - I'd bet there is someone close to you who would show you what a good example is like and take you for a spin :scared:
  16. Apparently your car weighs 1740kgs. I hope that isn't true - if my car weighs that much I'm selling it.. Thought they were supposed to be 1560kgs or thereabouts? :offtopic: Myth seperated from fiction yet again. Yowser, you are rapidly becoming a fountain of knowledge! Basically, unless you increase tyre size, you can pretty much achieve the same stopping distance with any size of disc capable of locking the wheels? Meaning that actual stopping performance on a one off basis won't be significantly improved (in normal driving conditions), no matter how big your discs are?
  17. Would guess the crank and rods are the same, so yes. Pistons no. Someone who knows what they're talking about will be along soon though...
  18. Hmm I Likey! Rare as rocking horse ... :whistling: Makes you wonder why Nissan developed the VQ alongside the VG, surely there can't be that many differences between the engines. Anyone know if they share the same bore and stroke? My money is on they do. I know a place in Stockport that can you parts for any jap import car ever made - at a premium. Nissan parrts shouldn't be difficult to get hold of though - cars from that era shared more parts than a nymphomainiac's swingers party! Soo much potential there..
  19. I reckon the zed is quite a good drift car in the wet, but as the reasons stated above, I'm not convinced it makes it a good car to drift in the dry. And yes, there is about half a turn of the steering wheel to little when you start throwing it very sideways. There's nothing worse than hitting the lock stop and you can still feel the car letting go :helpsmilie: That said - if thats what you want then go for it - but as z32bolt says, there are probably cheaper more suitable alternatives about. 1500 kgs is about 300 kgs too many in my opinion. I would suggest you make a fast road setup (i.e: can handle bumps, speed humps and potholes AND be comfortable to sit in) and you'd still be able to enjoy the odd powerslide or trackday. If you drive it really hard, you better have deep pockets - trust me on this..
  20. A friend of mine did an unexpected brake test from 170 mph (so he tells me) in his M3, only cost him about 750 quid to put it right afterwards. two warped discs and crispy pads! I noticed with the standard brakes that after 3-4 hard stops from 50-70 mph they are cooked and braking efficiency massively reduced. Wasn't braking hard enough to trigger the ABS, but pretty much 95% of maximum I would guess. I think trying to time the 50-30 test will be too quick and the accuracy only as good as the person operating the stopwatch. If you try it in a regular car you will see that actually, you can do this very quickly if you try - probably just over a second, depending how sensitive your foot is. I would say you need to do 70 to a complete stop to give any really meaningful results, but this is unkind to your discs and not really good driving etiquette either. That said, if you go out early on a sat or sun, you should be able to do it somewhere quiet without risking an accident. Thing is though, you have to slam the anchors on as hard as you can without triggering the ABS, which is easier said than done. When you really need the brakes its surprising how strong they are - I doubt anyone uses 100% of their ability without taking it on a track. Why would you, you'd have to be anutter to drive like that. think you need to find an airfield bud.. then set a pair of cones out as a reference point. I would be surprised if you were able to improve efficiency by 25%, which would be a just reward for such an improvement in equipment. Best of luck anyway - will wait for the results eagerly!
  21. 2 or 3rd car if you count the missus' clio and my old work van.. Haven't got the work van anymore, but don't do any driving in the uk either, unless I'm back on leave - in which case its Zed time!! Don't care how much petrol costs - I'm going to enjoy mine before all the petrol runs out :scared:
  22. Can of worms - open! Just thought that calling muslim dress 'stupid', was a bit OTT and could be perceived as being a bit er, racist? Anyway - didn't want to start a political debate, but I don't think we should get too concerned with what people wear... Unless its a bomb vest!! :tt2:
  23. 100,000 miles and its been owned by a boy racer! Sounds like a recipe for good long term durability  My sister had one of the lower spec models and it went on and on and on.. Reckon you could do a lot worse than one of these, never heard much about the handling though - presume its reasonable enough. If you wanted a GTi model I'd keep looking and try and find one thats just had its 60k service and, therefore, offers a bit of a better long term proposition. Also try and find one that hasn't been modded! I'm guessing he knows its a 140mph car because... I drive exactly like that and I wouldn't buy a car from me either! :stupid:
  24. I've got "Leo - born in 1978 in Macclesfield Hospital" tatooed in large print.. somewhere
