Who has V-Maxed their Zed?
We all know the Zed is a potent beast - but how many have kept your foot in all the way until it runs out of puff in 5th? Please do not tell me where or when you tried this - I shall assume it was on a private road / airfield / race track - or in Germany. Irrespective of where or when - what's the fastest you have been in your Zed AND what's the fastest you've been in any car?? The fastest I've been in my Zed is 145 (ish). The fastest I've ever been was flat-out, at an indicated 165mph, in my mates R33 GTS.

not exactly the end of the world then!! ;-)

Which side is it? Passenger or drivers? If I remember rightly - Jeff was able to remove the passenger turbo without removing the engine - knowing your luck it will be the driver's side.. Will have a pair of T25's available soon - good working order! Make me an offer and you can keep a spare..

Going rate for engine rebuild
If you mean - someone has fitted a boost controller and turned it upto max, without any other engine mods - then yes your engine is probably fooked. If you're not running boost I assume this is because you have a problem? A healthy engine, running standard boost will make somewhere between 270-300+ horsepower depending if its had air filter, cat back system etc etc.. This is what you would expect to see, power wise.

anyone else tried to race a gtr the r35?
At last! something we can agree on!

Going rate for engine rebuild
the above quoted amount includes Wiseco pistons, cometic head gaskets, 60k service kit, bearings and other bits and bobs (timing belt tensioners etc). Basically you'll have a near standard engine in fine fettle. If you want to uprate parts above and beyond those mentioned, then that will cost extra..

You're nearly as stubborn as me! I agree / can accept some of the things you say - but I think one of your points is: that the car was made by different people and didn't share any physical parts with the outgoing model. Change is something we are wary of - progress can only be made if we make changes though. Even if you don't consider it to be actual progress. Out of interest - how do you reckon the R35 would have differed if it had been designed by the R34 team? How radically different do you think it would have been. I know the R35 doesn't have the 'backbone' structure that the Tokyo show car did, but this happens a lot with concept cars - they are designed to cause a stir and hype. Factor in economics and eventually a lot of the design elements are toned down or withdrawn altogether. As far as I'm aware, the R35 was always going to have a V6?? What is this DNA that is missing?

mpg
I noticed when I did my scotland dash, at 7am xmas day morning, that the fuel economy doesn't really alter much above 70. Unless you constantly accelerate and decelerate. At a steady ?? to ?? mph it still returned around 30mpg. Santa and his slay wouldn't have been able to keep up!! The thing is, maximum power (lets say 6000rpm) is also maximum engine efficiency - if it wasn't for pesky aerodynamics in the equation, it would actually give you the best economy driving flat out in fifth!
-
mpg
Be-Jesus, 4mpg? I've driven 35ton dumpers with better fuel economy than that!!
-
mpg
I used to get just over 30mpg on the motorway (70+) :tt2: And low teens when spanking it down the lanes.. Mixed cycle, probably about 23-25mpg average (i.e - not spanking it everywhere!) :scared: Will depend on the mods and how well its been looked after.. and how you drive it.. so just a few variables there then!!

Am i one or not...
If it means you can park your car in front of a shop you really need to go to, when its pissing down with rain AND you have a blue badge, then yes - you are indeed, disabled. If you are claiming incapacity benefit and playing football in the park with a can of Special Brew, then no - you are not disabled. Hope that helps..

There's a couple of things that need to be raised here. Firstly, I think you're falling into the trap that many enthusiasts do - of having slightly rose-tinted glasses. Now let me state for a fact, I too see the R34 as an icon, the pinnacle of a 20 year developement cycle of the Skyline series. I too have owned a skyline (hence my user ID) and I too hold that car in very high regard.. Perhaps a little too highly. I love the Skyline, the GTR red emblem and everything that the Skyline stood for - culturally and in the tuning world. But I think you're being a bit dismissive of the truth.. Why did Renault buy Nissan?? It wasn't because Nissan were out-stripping the Fenchies on the forecourt was it? The very reasons you stated that make the R34 exclusive, may make for good residuals and a rare site - but that doesn't make good strategy from a business point of view. OK, the current R35 may be a French-Jap lovechild, but the fact that it is selling well and filling the coffers means that we will get a R36, R37 etc etc. Would you rather Nissan stopped making high performance cars - just because YOU don't believe they live up to expectations?? I think its best they continue. Plagued with problems? I haven't heard this from anyone else. OK a few cars may have had problems - all cars do. But also remember the RB26DETT was essentially dead after the R34 - it couldn't meet the new emissions regulations. What would you rather have? An electric R35 or the VG38 engine? Its sad to see the RB gone, but its for good reason - the engine was low tech (which is probably why it was bomb proof), compared to modern engines. You can't hold it against the R35 that it hasn't got an RB - otherwise there's no point even trying to discuss the issue - its completely unreasonable. Finally, as much as I like Skylines, you can't deny the R35's bloodline. The way it crafts brute force, technology and practicality is exactly the ethos of the Skyline. You could argue it should be more of a sleeper, but the R34 was no shrinking violet either. Whether you like it or not, the R35 is accepted by the vast majority of petrol heads as the spiritual successor to the R34 GTR and rightly so. I would recommend you buy a R34 and spend some 'private time' with it and get it out of your system. Yes the old SKYLINES were incredible cars, but pound for pound, the new R35 punches well above its weight - more so than any previous car to wear the Red Emblem. End of philosophical rant.. :tt2:

Too be fair - from what I've read about David Yu's GTR in evo magazine, its not quite that simple to liberate 600 hp. For a start, tuners will see you coming - try 2000 quid for an exhaust system and so on.. As for performance - I innihilated one when my car was working! He was going in the opposite direction, but when I put my foot down he disappeared from view!! Seriously though - the GTR has 7 gears and is capable of full bore upshifts. Nevermind the fact it has 150+bhp more and weighs nearly 400kg more - that gearbox is worth a few seconds to a hundred and gives much better in-gear acceleration too. Even if you had the same power to weight ratio, it would still destroy you with 2 extra cogs in the box. The GTR is one serious mo fo car, that's why it can take on ferrari's, porsches and lambo's costing vastly more money AND competely humble them on a damp bumpy backroad. If anyone is in any doubt, I suggest you get a few back copies of evo's Car Of The Year issue - these guys drive exotica everyday and still were blown away by the GTR.. If you want to take on of these bad boys down, I think you'll need at least 500 brake and have shed a few kilo's too. If its a drag race or even slightly damp - forget it.

Meet and Ride venues
Looks like a well thought out and well planned idea! Really disappointed I can't make the first one, but I'm hoping I might make the second - if the intention is to have one a month. Hope there is a good turn out - we all moan there aren't enough meets then we never show up when there is one (me included!). But if Jeff can't organise a local gathering, no-one can! Best of luck with this, hope to see you soon (should have the car back late June / early July - fingers crossed!!)

Its not Zedward but it IS yellow
You change your car more often than I change my pants  Great looking car - can't remember seeing a yellow one before - it looks great! I've considered one of these many times - the girlfriend wants an Audi TT next , but I'm thinking I'll be getting.. ahem, SHE'LL be getting one of these little bad boys! If you actually keep it longer than 46.5 hrs then I could be interested when you come to sell! Good look with it - but knowing Toyotas, other than a few washers and bushes, it should be a pretty cheap and reliable car - fingers crossed for ya! Shame it wasn't a T-bar - but then again, you like your slick tops!! :cool2:

Finally fitted a Flux Capacitor...
That would make a very cool space car / car plane type thingy! Good luck with the mechanical tinkering stuff!!

My new Zed :)
I like the wheels it has on now - five spokes really suit the Zed. Fine looking motor - definitely the best colour! Welcome to the black zed crew! Hope its a good un for ya :gunsmilie:

Gutted!!
Having spent four years getting my house into a relatively comfortable state, I can fully appreciate your pain. I could imagine nothing worse than having to go back to the bare walls and start again. I got frustrated with having to re-seal the en-suite shower after the old sealant had gone mouldy again. Nevermind re-doing the whole room! Maybe you could get it fixed up relatively cheap and cheerful - to afford some time to save some cash and check if the problem returns? Gutted for you

Turbos
Silverbullet can help you with a rebuild - depending on the condition it will cost about 550 quid or 600 if you want to upgrade to 360 thrust bearings. That price includes balancing by a specialist and delivery. I was looking into this but decided to upgrade to new GT525's instead. Think you'd enjoy T28's they're a good bit bigger than T25's, but you will need to get the car mapped properly and the essential other mods as Coolq pointed out. 520hp - that's pretty impressive power! :w00t:

Stripping out the Z
If you have a 1500kg car and loose 150kg - obviously, thats a 10% weight saving and even more beneficial than a 10% power gain, because you you are no longer carrying that mass around bends or when braking (stop me if I sound like Martin Brundle..) The ACTUAL benefit of this depends completely on how you drive the car. In terms of acceleration, it will be noticeable but not overwhelming unless you achieve considerable weight loss. If you don't push your car right to the limit when cornering (track day use etc) then you're not going to get any benefit other than marginally improving tyre wear. If you do drive your car hard then it will be very noticeable - like kicking 2 passengers out! Sounds like a sensible way to start - providing you can live with it afterwards!
