  1. Thundercats HOOOOOOO!!!
  2. If you made a steel wheel in the same shape as an alloy five spoke then I guess the wheel would be weaker (or more prone to distortion), but more usually, a steel wheel has a few perforated holes (not including the new steel wheels that the likes of Vauxhall make that lurk behind plastic wheel trims that look like alloys - lol) and is therefor a stronger wheel. A lot of the alloy wheels available at sensible money are not pressure cast or forged - they are sand cast and not as strong. Either way, the rules of this argument can be changed to suit either party. If you would like to settle this by a curb test, once Sparky has fitted his steelys, then I would recommend a 50 mph head on impact with the curb and see who fares best!! My guess is, both will be fooked - just the alloys will be worth more as scrap! Hope you don't mind me volunteering your car Sparky! BTW - I love a good ratter!
  3. Whereabouts in the U of K are you? I might come and see if I can spy some test runs (presumably your car will be adorned with zebra vinyl wrap during its shakedown, er, I mean careful evening trip to the shops..)
  4. FAKE!! If the car really was pushing that speed, why is the rev gauge swinging around the 2k mark? I am to believe that at 180mph someone had dipped the clutch (that would be very silly)? Changing down at that speed would destroy the engine and probably crash the car to. Also the Techtom seems to be suggest the engine temp is about 73 (i.e: not very warm). Prove me wrong by any means, but I reckon the car is infact, stationary. :tt2:
  5. just done a quick calculation.. 25 x 7.2 = 180mph (if the redline is at 7200rpm..) - so what you're saying sounds about right. I recall someone saying the turbos are all out of puff at about 6500rpm (162.5 mph), so effectively after that point you've got about 250hp trying to push through air (maybe a little more depending on mods). I think 160mph is more than enough, its the acceleration thats fun.
  6. - hope you're not using the road as a race track / rally stage!!! Shame you didn't try to establish some before and after performance stats like Dazvert and his brake tests.. Get some pictures up!!
  7. Self assessment.. - Its bloody years since I claimed for mileage and every year I still get sent a self assessment form. Every year they end up giving me a cheque for a few hundred quid tax I overpaid. You'd have thought they'd just stop sending me them, seeing as I'm PAYE and don't claim any other expenses now. I hate filling in tax returns Used to be 40p/mile for first 10k miles then 25p/mile for any over 10k. Worked out at about a few hundred quid a year for me, despite doing about 20 thousand work miles a year..
  8. Eh? Yes they weigh more - no, they are not weaker. Alloys are brittle whereas steel is flexible (at their respective peak tolerances). Thats why 90% of stunts performed in movies use steel wheels - not alloys. When was the last time your saw a forklift with alloy rims? Or any mobile heavy lifting equipment? Its nothing to do with cost - its all about strength..
  9. Woot! Mikey is in the 300 club!! That must have been immense - and from a Cossie too, it must of been like sitting in the space shuttle on re-entry (i imagine).. :scared: Cannot comprehend how fast that must seem - 3 miles a minute - RESPECT
  10. As long as its not a cheap Ebay jobby I think either would be fine. I know Z1 recommend Greddy - but that might because Greddy agreed to give them the biggest wholesale discount!! Just avoid very cheap ones - think about where you want to put it and how you want it to look too.
  11. Had a look at these earlier - if I ever get my car anywhere near this level of finish then I'll be a very happy bunny! Its an absolute credit to you - that engine bay is like the mechanism of a fine Swiss watch - an object of beauty! Also, I took the trouble off adding a little something to make this pic perfect!! DOH - posted reply in wrong thread!! I'm not even drunk - :asshole:
  12. You sure it didn't feel quicker cos you were sat in the passenger seat?? I always make that mistake. First time I let my mate drive my car, I can remember thinking JESUS CHRIST that's quick. Plus my mate weighs about 18 stone, so he's a fair bit of ballast to lug around! So nobody hit the limiter in top then? Or does the engine run out of puff before it gets there?
  13. My mate has those wheels on his R33 (or very similar) - look really good on the Zed. Shame you couldn't flog those old alloys for a little profit.. Better check that corner for suspension damage too - someone could have hit a curb or something - it requires a fair bit of energy to crack an alloy. Looking good though bud!
  14. This is exactly why I went for a rebuild and not a transplant.. Luck of the draw - even if it was sold to you with the best of intentions. Without stripping it, its impossible to be 100% sure - even if you get it compression tested etc before fitting. It really is crap luck mate, but the VG is the achilles heel of these old girls - when they are working correctly, its also the best thing. Don't let Hollowpoint hear you talking about RB25's (RB26 FTW!! :tt2:) Only kidding hollowpoint!!
  15. you going banger racing? or are you popping jumps with your Zed? Just wondered why you want steel rims for?? As long as the stud pattern and offset are the same any wheel (that clears the caliper) will fit. Think someone said the Mitsi GTO has the same stud pattern, but think they only made alloys for the GTO. There are a few other models you can borrow from - there was a thread about this recently - although it didn't specify steel wheels. Try searching back a few pages in the thread history and have a look..
  16. What else has been done to the motor mate?? Oh, and get your 'Rides' section sorted - you're a fully paid up member now - so no excuses!!
  17. Providing your gearing is not hugely affected by larger wheels then a good rule of thumb is 25mph per 1000 rpm in fifth. Your rev gauge is another speedo in disguise!
  18. Excellent read mate, the first 2 paragraphs had me convinced you were quoting from another source! Nice analogy with the ageing fighter. And yes, it will try to kill you in the wet - I was still getting caught out after 9 months with it. Fortunately there wern't any severe consequences, but it is a very thin line.. Couldn't agree more with your sentiments, reminded me of when I'd just bought mine and used to wake up at 5am like an excited school kid, just so I could go and play!!
  19. couldn't of put that better myself !! I've often thought about a mini-gun mounted in the back of a Toyota Hi-Lux, then going to shoot some 'hood-rats'. Just to keep the population in check.. Stop me if I've gone too far!! :scared: :2guns: :tt2:
  20. some people would be happy if they could fix their car for 'just' 2 grand
  21.  At least that's one thing we agree on!
  22. I think if you're doing an auto to manual change then it makes just as much sense to stick a six speed in as it does a 5 speed. Thing is though, the N/A 350z doesn't have anything like the torque produced by the VG TT. If you're running a N/A, then that extra cog inbetween 1st and fifth should really help. In a TT I think an extra cog would get in the way of power. If the 6th gear actually went further than 5th did, you could use it like an overdrive to boost cruising economy. I've never really thought that my car was too long geared, but I've also not driven a TT with a N/A diff to compare.. I've heard of a few 6 speed conversions - whats the most common 'box to use? And how does it affect the ratios?
  23. It cost me about 12 quid to fill my Ford 4x4 the other day - from empty. No wonder all the Arabs are driving huge SUV's that do single figure fuel consumption. But on the other hand, we do live in the greatest country on earth - just ask any of the work-shy, sprog popping, benefit claiming, jail dodging, thieving, useless scum that live down my street! If it wasn't for having to support all those useless fecks, then we'd all be rich and pay a lot less tax. I'm not having a go at people who actually use jobseekers to see them through a bad patch, or people who really do need the benefit system. I'm talking about the people who choose to do nothing, because its so easy for them not to. If it wasn't for these people, our country would be great - you don't appreciate it until you live somewhere else! Don't blame the government for putting up taxes - they're only trying to balance the books - blame the people who don't contribute anything to the system.
  24. Hollowpoint: The R32 GTR was developed with winning the JTCC series purely in mind - anyone who has played gran turismo can tell you that. But it doesn't necessarily mean that the GTR was developed first, then the GTS etc. As a fellow car enthusiast I would be interested to know how you can be 100% sure of this. Please tell us where you learnt this information!
