What steel wheels fit

As title, i know i wont be popular for doing this, but are there any decent sized steel rims that fit the ZX

you going banger racing? or are you popping jumps with your Zed? Just wondered why you want steel rims for??

 

As long as the stud pattern and offset are the same any wheel (that clears the caliper) will fit. Think someone said the Mitsi GTO has the same stud pattern, but think they only made alloys for the GTO.

 

There are a few other models you can borrow from - there was a thread about this recently - although it didn't specify steel wheels.

 

Try searching back a few pages in the thread history and have a look..

There was a Z on ebay a few days ago with steel wheels on, but unfortunately I'm not sure what from. American stuff may be your most likely bet.... 5x114.3 equates to 5 on 4.5 in american talk.

 

edit: in fact jeep cherokee sport & wrangler models from 1993 to 2001ish had them. (15" & 16" iirc)

Ive found things like primera 16inch steel wheels, so its the stud pattern i need to match. Should have known that really.

Ive just had a thought.

Standard zed wheels dont fit on my car because i have skyline brake discs.

These are 15's that wont work.

Some 16" will clear skyline brakes, dependent on offset and style, but to be safe you will need 17" plus to clear.

 

Most steel wheels are very narrow, far too skinny for the Z. Meant for base models, not high peformance cars.

 

Not to mention how they weigh more and are weaker than Alloys.

 

You dont need steels for the rat look, plenty of alloy wheel styles that fit the bill without ruining the handling.

Yeah i dont want to compromise performance. These jeep ones are quite wide but they do look extremely flimsy in the middle.

I think old skool Jag'/Chevy PCD is about the same, you might try that for your ebay search.

Thanks but they are a bit too much alloy wheel looking for my likings. I would ideally like some lovely painted banded 17" steels, but they are a bit pricey

Go look on Retro Rides.

 

There're guys on there who'll band steel wheels for you, properly. All you need to do is find the right PCD/diameter wheels and they'll band them out to whatever you want.

 

How about banding a set of spacesaver spare wheels? Might not do a lot for brake performance though! :-/

Eh? Yes they weigh more - no, they are not weaker. Alloys are brittle whereas steel is flexible (at their respective peak tolerances). Thats why 90% of stunts performed in movies use steel wheels - not alloys. When was the last time your saw a forklift with alloy rims? Or any mobile heavy lifting equipment? Its nothing to do with cost - its all about strength..

correct strength of useage aswel. is teh strength tensile, or another type. this is what determines the useage of material, alloy is great for roar cars because its ridgid and light, it however is brittle, no good for being twisted with torque or putting heavy weight on. steel whilst not holding its shape well ie bending, is more likly to do this than snap hence its use with heavy machinery.

If you want 18" there's a new performance dodge or chevy which has them in 5x114.3 but I can't remember which model, it's uk supplied though and you can buy them from the dealer at about 150 quid each. Thing is you'll need to get them banded for them to be wide enough. Also I hope you know how heavy banded steelies are compared to alloys?

If you want 17's go for some cragars from northhantstyres, I'm pretty sure you can get the black widow in our fitment in 17x9 et0 and they look just like the ones posted :)

If you made a steel wheel in the same shape as an alloy five spoke then I guess the wheel would be weaker (or more prone to distortion), but more usually, a steel wheel has a few perforated holes (not including the new steel wheels that the likes of Vauxhall make that lurk behind plastic wheel trims that look like alloys - lol) and is therefor a stronger wheel.

 

A lot of the alloy wheels available at sensible money are not pressure cast or forged - they are sand cast and not as strong.

 

Either way, the rules of this argument can be changed to suit either party.

 

If you would like to settle this by a curb test, once Sparky has fitted his steelys, then I would recommend a 50 mph head on impact with the curb and see who fares best!! My guess is, both will be fooked - just the alloys will be worth more as scrap!

Ive had friends in the past mash their alloys up on curbs and chunks have been taken out, cracks all sorts. Steel wheels ive only ever seen bent. If you hit something your not expecting the wheels to be reusable after anyway imo.

 

I had a look on retro rides yesterday and got myself a good understanding of banded steels.

Pretty much what i expected, but i dont know if ill bother with that route. Think ill just keep my eyes out for some already wide steels that fit. Or possibly go for the suzuki ones in the picture.
