  1. Car booked in to zed world sat morning So a quick trip across the A5 should identify the problem and, undoubtedly, signal the start of a somewhat expensive brake and suspension overhaul. Will wait and see whats said. But the Hicas elliminator might not be much use if the bushes are shagged. all comments appreciated - as always cheers
  2. just had a quick look on the driftworks website. the kit that replaces the bushes in addition to the lock out bars, is 200 squids. but if it makes the arse end solid, then its cheaper than payin my 500 quid excess, after my zed has tried mateing with a tree. Thanks for the pointer.
  3. Thanks for the input andy, when you said your's were shagged originally - what was the problem? Do they bend or warp after a while and throw the rear tracking out or somethin? Sounds like an easy enough solution tho, so thanks for that. Need to find a ramp and poke about I guess, but tricky when you don't really know what you're lookin for. Bunny hop is quite an apt description tho! Hell, thought my car was entering an unofficial hula hoop competion or somethin.. A hicas lock out would probably remedy the problem too i guess. Will see how the finances look and drive slowly in the meantime. Cheers
  4. Right, have bought a car now. Whooppee But already I have identified a problem. Boooo Was on a motorway slip road and on a long constant radius turn at about 70mph. When I hit the expansion gap the whole rear end stepped out of line a couple of inches, which was quite unnerving. Felt like the whole rear suspension was all at sea (rocking chair on a water bed). I dint notice this on the test drive and generally the suspension seems fine... unless you hit a bump mid corner, in which case it feels like the Hicas has decided to take a different route to the front wheels. As you may have guessed there is no lock out bar for the Hicas yet, but I wondered if this is a common trait of worn bushes or somethin similar? Will be getting the car thoroughly checked out soon, but maybe you can warn me what to expect? Car is a 95 reg if that makes any difference. Cheers:huh:
  5. Thanks for the input, As long as it isnt adversely affecting function or performance then its not gonna be a deal breaker. Seems that there's a clear division between those who like car farts and those who dont! Guess the novelty wears off after a while, eh? Once again, thanks for the advice
  6. Tell me more about recircs please...! Cheers Jeff
  7. Excuse my ignorance, but how does that work? I imagined that the BOV would let boost get dumped as soon as you lifted the throttle, irrespective of boost pressure at that time.. If the boost isnt required a bypass valve opens and away it goes? As you may well guess, turbo's and stuff are a new ball park for me.. cheers
  8. Had a Sierra XR4x4 a few years back (great car-turned to rust befor my very eyes) and i was paying £300 a yr to insure it. I had 5 points for driving without due care (who me?) and my skyline was costing me about £1200 quid a year to insure at the same time. £1500 a year on insurance, and the thing that really took the piss, the sierra spanked the skyline big time performance wise, but then it was a second car doin less than 7500miles a yr. Try em, very reasonable
  9. hrrrrrrmmmm pffffooo, hrrrrrrmmmmmm pfffffooooo.... Thats basically what a TT should sound like with BOV's yeah? Had a test drive in a car with some unknown BOVs fitted direct inline with the hoses, but they were dead silent. Like, not even the slightest hint off any sudden release of pressure when lifting off the accelerator. Could this just be that whoever fitted them didnt want to draw attention, or is it somethin I should investigate more thoroughly. The engine pulled strongly and was clearly building boost, but I was a little disappointed when it failed to announce that boost was being dumped. whats the worst case scenario here? Ive driven a few TT's all at different states of tune, and this one wasn't the quickest, but its not a symptom of something more serious I hope. Has anyone else got after market BOV's that operate near silently? And if so, why change them from the stock items in the first place? I know some people like to be descreet, but surely a dump valve performs a pretty limited job really; once the valve reaches a certain size it must be able to dump pressure within 99% of the time that a bigger valve would allow. All opinions/comments welcome thanks
  10. The car I drove was a TT.. Was still in km/h but was reading approx 40 km/h in fifth per 1000 revs, so not far off what was mentioned above. Car did have a set of after market alloys on, so that would allow for a little difference between what it should be and what it actually is. Was getting paranoid that the car started life as an N/A but had a different lump dropped in at a later date, however, all seems to be in order after a little advice from this forum. After months of trying to find the right car, I think i've found one at an affordable price. Going for another test drive tomorrow on a longer run just to put any worries to bed. All being well, this time tomorrow i'll be changing my moniker to leo-z32tt. Thanks - its appreciated.
  11. Sorry, computer says 'No'. Whats that in simple terms? How fast does 2000 revs (or whatever revs you want) in fifth, equate to in terms of indicated speed on the dash. Thanks for the help. Cheers
  12. Thanks for the help with the boost guage issue. Another question now. The car i test drived yesterday was pulling 25mph per 1000 revs in 5th, is that right? I thought the gearing was taller than that? Engine redlines at 6700 doesnt it? So that would mean 167.5 potential top speed - right? Its not really the kinda thing you can do in someone elses car, I mean if someone test drove my car and redlined it, they'd be walking back to their car.. Gotta show a bit of respect! Its not like I intend driving flat out anywhere, but could indicate a different gearbox from a N/A or something. I'm sure you guys will know, its not another series specific thing is it? woulda thought all tt's had same final drive and cog box. Here's hoping. Cheers
  13. An odd one that. Last series 6 definitely had one, but couldnt for the life of me work out why nissan would fit it to some and not others. At least I can have another look at the car without being paranoid about it. Hopefully will be a 300zx owner tomorrow!! Cheers guys
  14. Im confused.. Do all TT have factory boost gauges built into the speedo? Have seen a couple of cars M/N reg that do not have the boost gauge. Is this correct? Were later models sent off the production line without these pretty important items? I was thinking that the cars must have started life as N/A motors with TT fitted retrospectively. Or have i just failed to realise what everyone else knew for ages? Please help as I've seen a decent car, but was put off by the above mentioned fact. Was starting to worry about origins of engine (good/bad donor) and whether the install had been done correctly. Need to know by tomorrow dinner time as up in scotland viewing car. Back to the midlands tomorrow cheers
  15. Call me Sherlock? Call me stupid. Take it you saw the black one and came to a similar conclusion. Take it you bought the white one? Hope its agood en. Best of luck fella, hopefully wont be far behind you.. I sold my skyline this weekend and dont have a car now! Travelled to scotland by train. EEEEWWW.
  16. Easy mate, You may remember me from birmingham, I was the one waiting for hours to look at that rough running piece of sh... Just been and looked at the car today. The good news is, its in great nick. The bad news is it didnt leave the factory with a tt motor in it. I had the cash in my pocket and was pretty much ready to hand it over, but the lack of bosst gauge got me suspicious. On closer inspection the tailgate doesnt have the TT logo either. Call me Sherlock but I put 2 and 2 together and got 4. The chassis plate has the right codes on it but I dont know where the other V.I.N plate is located. My guess is it started life as a N/A. Which raises a few questions. Firstly, in 5th it was pulling 25mph per 1000 revs, so hyperthetically this means it will hit the rev limiter at 165. I was under the impression a tt should be able to reach 180+, power permitting. Not only will this result in poor fuel economy, but also will the N/A gearbox cope with the extra torque from the TT motor? Also, what about brakes? Are these smaller on the N/A compared to the TT? Finally, looks like a previous owner had problems earthing the new/modified wiring loom, as all earths return to the battery. While I was test driving it there was a singing smell that lasted about 3mins. My guess is something arced behind the dash and melted some rubber somewhere. Not tryin to put you off, but I walked away for those reasons and was just about to post a thread asking for advice when i saw this... So, best of look with the hunt (you and me both brother) but maybe some more experienced members can advise us novices befor we buy a financial black hole to pour money into.... Thanks all, help apppreciated, sorry for hi-jacking your thread...
  17. Ouch... 2 and a half years and still no mot. Thats bad alright. What happened? Did the prop shaft come adrift and flip it or somethin? thats a long time to pour money into somethin without even gettin to drive it. I hope the end result makes it all worth while! Did consider gettin a rough one and restoring it to former glory, but guess im too impatient. Not really hands on, mechanically, either - so would end up shellin out loads of cash gettin someone else to do the work. still keeping a beady eye on the classifieds, so will hopefully find the ideal motor sooner rather than later - but as the adverts for a certain dark beer say - good things come to those who wait!! here's hopin im a fully affiliated member soon.. thanks for the messages
  18. Have to say Im in the 'spend more - pay less' camp. If somethin seems too good to be true it usually is. Spent 3k on my skyline 4 yrs ago and not a penny since - apart from servicing and consumables. Could of got one cheaper at the time, but probably would have spent what i saved keepin a poorly-maintained car runnin. There are bargains out there, but also too many turd boxes waiting to explode with dodgy odometers and tampered mileage. Im no expert, but know enough when to walk away, even when the price is tempting. thanks for the comments...
  19. was hoping for a bit more than £100.. add a couple of noughts and its yours, hell for that price i'll chuck the other in as well. Had a look at the above link - nice motor but probably a bit extreme for me. Im used to less than 200 brake, so 500+ is probably a leap too far. Id either loose my licence or my life. My guess is when you have that much power it becomes a bit of a handfull - was thinking 300 - 350 rwhp would be more than enough for me to start with. I prefer low end power rather than on/off crazy boost. Not that im a wimp or anythin... thanks for the post tho, keep em coming
  20. Hi all, Been sniffin round your forum for a while so thought i'd say hi. As you may have guessed i've got a skyline at the mo, but looking for somethin different now (had it 4yrs) and have always admired the zed. Im trying to find a good one - hence why i joined this site, to check the classifieds. Im looking to get a series III (post '93) as i cant justify gettin a car older than my current car. Top of my list is a '93 tt lwb manual with 63k on it. I wont say where the car is advertised as I dont wanna get gazumped by someone else like me... (sorry). Trouble is, i know the dealer has had it for at least 6 months and it hasnt been used. Not good. A new clutch master cylinder is ordered for it and i'll get a test drive at the end of the month. Dealer is askin for £3.5k which sounds reasonable - but I know the first thing it'll need doin is the timing belts etc - so lets add 500 to take care of a major service and fluids change. It has a riduculous 6" single exhaust on, turbo boost controller, oil temp gauge and some naff alloys (possibly an induction kit too - not sure) but otherwise standard. Cloth interior. The way i see it i have 2 choices: spend 3-4k and get somethin that needs tlc, or spend 6-7k and get somethin thats had tlc (silver zx tt lwb on pistonheads at £5.8k looks spot on - dorset i think). any thoughts? Also, my current car is N/A and costs nothin to run other than a yearly service for about £150 (nothin has ever gone wrong with it). Am i going to need a new cheque book to maintain a zed? As i would rather blow my cash modifying rather than keepin it workin. Finally (sorry if im goin on a bit), if anyone hears of a tidy sub 70k tt manual for sale, please let me know. not really into body kits but dont mind if they're tuned, as i know from experience you never get back the money you put in. let someone else pay i say! Has anyone had a full interior retrim at zed world? how much does it cost? probably the second thing id do after servicin the hell out of it... appreciate the input folks.. cheers
