Re your stuck CAS to bracket. I had the same with a late CAS I bought s/h. To avoid damaging it I cut the bracket itself at two points to just before the CAS and then split with a small cold chisel and light taps. The bracket is a soft alloy casting and splits easily. Getting another bracket would be an easier (and cheaper) option.

This^^^ and then collect the manual parts at your leisure in case you have a change of heart in the future. You will always be able to sell them on if not.

It is eminently possible to convert from R12 to a later refrigerant like R134a. I would find a specialist who knows that. The pipes under the floor are all susceptible to corrosion damage. You will need to get under the car to see which has gone.
