platinum spark plugs
Nissan recommend changing them at 60k miles, although some people here running high power ZXs would probably change them at half that. Otherwise I'd stick with Nissan guidlines. Richard

worst car for reliability?
Sure is  I have never had a major problem with my 300zx and trust Nissan to be reliable overall. I still have more faith in my 15 year old 300zx than my 6 year old SLK or 4 year old Rav-4. When I go on holiday I nearly always take the ZX - I've just returned from Snowdonia, driving the ZX over 1000 miles in a week. Some serious overtaking (fekking caravans, ban them!!! :slap: ), mixed with steady 70mph a-road driving / broad thrashing and it never missed a beat. OK so I spent a small fortune in Shell's finest but who cares - after all, that's why I own a ZX..... Richard

fast road or manual
That would be my choice  Auto boxes are just fine if the performance is still there - Jag and Merc still fit autos as standard to their best performance cars. Autos are only slower than their manual counterparts on normal cars like a Mondeo etc. Richard ;)

worst car for reliability?
Have to say Ford. I bought a 6 month old Scorpio back in 1993. In the 3 months I owned it, it was always going back to Ford for something or other - that's when it would go in the first place. A friend was thinking about buying one a few years later - in her case it was an L reg, about 2-3 years old. I told her not to bother as I thought they were shite. Needless to say, she ignored me, bought one and that too spent most of its time being repaired! Richard :slap:

Press one for accounts, two for ballance enquiries etc
I bank with First Direct - not even a hint of automated answering things or Indian call centres - just straight through to a person anytime, whenever. Can't fault them at all  Richard

bearded dragon
I thought you were referring to my Mother-in law  Incidentally at a family dinner last year she commented on my stubble, as I don't like to be clean shaven. "Really Richard, you could have shaved" she snorted in front of Julia's uncle (who has my sense of humour - he is a 75 year old "me") I replied sarcastically "well so could you!" Old witch has barely spoken to me since  Richard :)

mortage
What he said!! The problem is the price of houses means people have to borrow a hell of a lot now, unless they have a big deposit or bought 10 years ago and have plenty of equity in their old house when moving now. I moved in March this year after selling my first home, which I had since 1997. It was fortunate for me, as my mortgate is now barely 40% of the price of my new house and not even twice my annual salary. I do feel for first time buyers now as they have to borrow loads - often 5 times their wages just to buy a small flat in London or the home counties  Richard

It's oh so quiet... shhhhhhh! It's oh.. so still!
At home. I rarely get the chance to play on the net at work for non-work related stuff. Besides I have to set an example - I comment when staff use the net in work time for their personal matters........ Bah Humbug!! Richard

Interesting Article - Women take note
Furthermore, comments from the female members aside, they must have been doing something right as the divorce rate was way way lower then. Society had not reached rock bottom and children had respect for their elders and other people's property. Family life was "normal" IE children had both a mother and father; not a single mother sponging off us poor tax payers, or even worse - two mothers or two fathers in a gay marriage....... It's all gone horribly wrong  Richard

new shell v power petrol
From personal experience (stock UK TT) I tend to agree with this. I have used optimax as well as Shell regular u/l and performance wise I have noticed very little difference. However where Optimax has been beneficial is during very hot weather - when the ambient temp was over 30 degrees last year I would occasionally get lower boost (possibly det/safety) on BP 95ron (and sometimes Shell 95ron) yet with Optimax it never happened. I could accelerate hard with full boost, no problems. Also Optimax has occasionally (though not always) given me more miles per tank over similar driving styles. I suspect V-power will prove similar in the long run, although I filled up with it last week from 1/4 full (of Optimax) and the car feels the same as before...... Richard

My plane caught fire at 32,000ft!!
Welcome back Si! And your story is exactly why I can't be arsed with the flying thingy....... ........but the Korean girl brightened up the whole thing though, eh? Hope you had a good holiday mate, and don't worry about the comments above. After all that I'd probably be too stressed to take the hint as well :wack: Richard

late deal holidays

Which oil?
Yup, extra virgin is my choice........ BTW, good to see you back on the forum Andy  Richard :)

ouch - this looks pretty painful..
This is exactly the same perception the public have of fast cars too. If you were driving at 30mph in your ZX and a child runs out in front of you. You would probably not stop in time and hit the poor unfortunate child; however just because you may be driving a ZX, everyone will blame you and say you must have been driving too fast, simply because "you have a fast car" I've lost count of the times I've almost been hit by dozey bints in people carriers on narrow twisty country lanes because they happen to be driving too fast. I may have only been going 20mph (compared to their 40+) because I cannot see round the tight corners; but because I happen to be in the ZX they always shout at me to slow down..... :nono: Richard :wack:

if you were to sell your zed
Well said you two! BTW, the car I forgot about was the MAseratti 3200gt - around £20k gets a nice 2000/2001 car with that Ferrari engine......... Richard :p

**de Tomaso Pantera**
Aren't they very unreliable? If I remember (and someone correct me if I have the wrong car) but didn't Elvis own one; and he shot it when it wouldn't start??? Richard :wack:

Retrofitting driver airbag - possible?
I wouldn't have thought so mate...... .....but then anything is possible if you don't mind spending wads of cash. I buy our fleet vehicles at work; whilst looking for a brand new Astra Van with a/c for an engineer, I got offered one without a driver's airbag for £2k less than all the others I could find. However I didn't want to go down that route (H&S regs etc and the possibility of driver sueing me or company if he had an accident) so I enquired about retro-fit airbags. Put it this way, it would have (just) been possible but cost way more then the £2k I would have saved on the van  Don't bother mate! Richard

New to the world of Z!
Welcome to the forum and the world of 30zx ownership! Warning - do not use anything but the genuine Nissan oil filter! Air filter - replace the air box with an Apexi or K&N (Apexi is the best), failing that just pop a pair of K&N elements into the air-box if you don't fancy the whole induction kit thing. As for oil, the can of worms has been opened! If your car is stock or slightly modded, then a decent semi-synthetic will be fine, changed every 3000 miles. Nissan recommend 10w40 so Magnatec will suffice. I personally prefer a decent fully synthetic for Turbo engines. Most readily available synthetics are 5w40 which again is just fine - I use Shell Helix Ultra (advantage is I can collect pluspoints on it ;) ). Changing a fully synth ever 3000 miles is overkill IMO and leaving it 4-5000 miles will be OK. Richard

More agresive Sound..
Decatting will not necessarily blow your turbos mate. The reason some cars smoke when decatted or simply fitted with a less restricting cat-back system, is that the turbo seals were probably on their way out anyway. The reduction in back pressure simply shown up a problem that most probably was there already. The car will run on fine for ages, alebit a bit smokey on idle, before you really need to replace turbos. Richard

if you were to sell your zed
I wouldn't hit you as I'm a bit of a Jag fan..... ......however having driven a couple of XK8s I can honestly say they are crap! I looked at a getting one earlier this year and found them a bit ponderous and a lot more lardy than a ZX. The 300zx is a much better sports/GT than the Jag - I just kept my ZX and bought an SLK instead. However the XKR is reputedly a great piece of kit but I have not driven one, especially with the suspension upgrade. A chap near my old house had a Paramount Performance modded XKR pushing out well over 500bhp; it sounded better than a TVR and went like stink - awesome!! Richard

Just bought another car.......
As above..... ......don't worry, I have not sold the ZX, I had a mad moment and decided to replace Julia's car. I left a deposit on a nice 2002 silver Rav-4 NRG, 52k miles 1 owner and FTSH for just £8k. Plus I managed to get a reasonable PX price on our old Rav too. Just need to visit DVLA next week to transfer my reg number to the new car  Insurance is dead cheap too - done the "multi car/driver policy" with Admiral. If I insure 2 cars together it works out only £231 for the Rav and £290 for the SLK, fully comp with 2 protected NCBs and both of us drving either car :hyper:  Richard
