  1. Hi Steve Re mobil-1, see my above post:D Seriously, though. I always used it in my Supra and it was ok, although it had a habit of getting through oil on occasions. No leaks and no turbo smoke, so a bit of a mystery. On my mechanic's instructions I switched to a thicker oil (mobil-1 15W50 Motorsport) and the oil consumption dropped:confused: Fuel consumption went up coz it was too thick  That's when I tried 5W40 (Shell Helix Synthetic is £29 for 4 ltrs), and I've stuck with it in my Zed so far....... Anyway, try Mobil-1 0W40, if it's sh1te you can always change it again;) Richard:)
  2. Hi Gio It looks like the PIAA bulbs came out best then;) The beam pattern is noticeably whiter and clearer. The passenger side may appear dimmer because it is probably aimed more to the left and higher, to light the area for road signs, verges etc. Whereas the driver side will be lower and central to avoid dazzling other drivers. Just a theory;) I have just bought a pair of Osram super+30% H3s to try, as they are only £14 a pair. Auto Express reckon the blue coating of PIAA bulbs robs some of the light output. If they are better than the PIAAs I have already, I'll post it here. Richard:)
  3. I've been using Shell Helix (Ultra, I think) fully synthetic 5W40. It gave good pressure/no noise when hot throughout the hot summer and is light enough for winter use. 0W40 would be better if winter temps get very low but my mechanic advised against Mobil 1 coz it's too thin and drains away from bearings too quickly. Richard:)
  4. 1/4 time for TT looks about right, WhatCar, Autocar & Evo have all achieved the 0-60 in 5.6 and 0-100 in 14.4 consequently they give these as official proven times for a stock UK TT. Up to about 40 the TT and N/A would be close, but when the turbos kick in, it's bye-bye to the N/A;) Richard:)
  5. Mine says "300zx turbo auto sports" :)
  6. Looking good
  7. With the recent rivalry on here from GTO and Rover lot I thought I would mention an old episode of Top Gear where this was put to the test. Anyone remember it? Basically to see which had safest handling Tiff & co placed stuffed animals on a blind bend of a track, then drove round the bend at high speed (60mph - A road speed) so the driver would see them at the last minute and have to brake/steer round them without hitting anything or losing control of the car. Cars chosen RWD= BMW 323i FWD=Alfa 156 2.5V6 4WD=Audi A4 2.6 (I think, can't remember exactly) And the safest, most predictable was........... ........surprised me, as I would have expected 4X4, was actually rear wheel drive!!!!!!!!!:D Well, I suppose the supercar manufacturers - Lambo, Ferrari, Aston, Jag etc can't all be wrong:dance:
  8. I replaced the engine temp sensor (ecu, not temp gauge) and it cured this problem Richard:)
  9. Hi Andy, Spot-on;) The oil pressure switch is a common problem and surprisingly expensive to fix:( The switch is £80+vat from Nissan dealers. Some members have aftermarket gauges as they are cheaper than the sender unit and more accurate. If you want to stay stock, get one from Courtesy Nissan, they are US$60 (around £40) but only if you are planning to order more parts anyway as the carriage+duty will bring the cost up to what you would pay here. You can ask Mike Feeney (Traders forum) how much he can get one for. Did you get a warranty with your car, if so they may pay for it (mine did;) ) HTH Richard:)
  10. hi Pete Hows this for a suggestion? Looking at an earlier post (still on current pages of forum) you could unscrew the bulb holder part (which holds the H1 main beam bulb) from the back of the reflector and replace it with the H4 holder from the semi-sealed beam unit used in the MR2/Celica/Supra....... If you are trying anyway.....;) Richard

Hi Alistair I had the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Like JohnyD says, because of the undertray the coolant could be leaking from anywhere and running down the tray and out the back. Mine was from the two little front hoses between the cam belt covers. You should be able to see the stains left by dry antifreeze splashed around the front of the engine if these are leaking. Someone here told me they only last about 3 years. I also had a small leak starting from the waterpump, so I had it replaced at the same time. Can you smell coolant after the engine has been running for a few miles, when fully hot? Richard
  12. Hi Ady I had exactly the same problem, in exactly the same spot as WillieO. I got my mechanic to send the car to his body repair centre, cost me £200 for cash:D No sign of it now, looks good as new:dance: Richard
  13. Interesting theory, Kierash. If it can be done dipped beam could by way improved as there are better upgraded bulbs in the H4 fitment (ie Osram Silverstar - AutoExpress test winner at only £16 a set:D ). Also the bigger reflector used for the main beam should produce a better, brighter light area in front of the car. Perhaps the projector beam for the current dipped lights could then be wired as a fog/spot light if the aim was lowered sufficiently?
  14. And you even polished the retaining bolts too:D Looks dead good, though:cool: Richard
  15. Just watched the "dream" one..... Richard
  16. When it's Camdens of Aylesbury:confused: No, that is not some attempt at a sad joke, but they could well be:D Now I need a small bulb for my heater control pannel. I took the blown one out on Sunday and as I was visiting Aylesbury this afternoon I went to Camden's Nissan (and Renault) dealers. I put the bulb on the parts counter and said to the girl, "one of those, please" I should have known it wasn't going well when she asked "What is it?" "It's a bulb:D " I replied, "A pannel bulb for a 300ZX" "Oh" she answered "That's why I was confused, we are not a Nissan dealer" Not being afraid of sarcasm I replied "Then why do you have a bl00dy great Nissan sign on the front and loads of unregistered Micras and Almeras for sale. Not to mention a lovely new 350Z??? " "No, we're a renault dealer !!" "Yes, but why the Nissan.....?" Anyway, it turns out they are both but the nearest Nissan parts dept was in Oxford. What a PITA:rolleyes: So Zed owners in Aylesbury area, don't go to Camdens for parts unless you want renault bits;) Richard

This thread has run on a lot longer than I thought it would;) Anyway i have a theory about why everyone thinks only old giffers drive Rovers (apart from the obvious, of course:D ) Has anyone noticed that when car manufacturers give their cars names instead of numbers, people say they drive a particular model (eg. Micra, Almera etc). But when they use numbers (eg 416, 220, 307, 911 etc) people refer to their car by manufacturer. (ie "I drive a Rover, Peugeot, Porsche" etc.) Because of this all models from that manufacturer get grouped together, regardless of type. Therefore as the usual Rover 414 is driven by a flat cap wearing coffin dodger, all Rover drivers are assumed to be the same:rolleyes: This is also true of the Nissan Almera (have you seen anyone under 80 driving one?):p But the 300ZX is obviously a breed unto itself, coz it has numbers and a name of sorts:dance: Richard:rofl:

I once had a pheasant hit the windscreen whilst doing 90 on the M25. I saw the fecker take off from the hard shoulder, I couldn't avoid it so I accelerated and moved as far right as possible. At least it came through the passenger side of the screen:D When I stopped, I noticed one of its toenails had got stuck in the rubber surround and its leg was still there:eek: Still, it left some decent "Viper-style" red stripes right over the (white) car:D :D Poor autoglass fitter had to clean up the mess:D Richard
  19. And who can forget "the springfied files" Homer "......nobody believes me. But you believe me, don't you Marge?" Marge "...no Homer, I don't believe you....." Homer "...Oh you do believe me, that's wonderful....." Marge ".....No Homer, you only hear what you want to hear" Homer "...Thanks Marge, I'd love an omlette about now..."

Welcome to zed ownership.... .....take care though, using the power is more addictive than crack:D Richard;)
  21. hi Stevo the Micra is actually a good choice. My wife drove a 1.0 16v (manual) before I bought her a new Corsa 1.4 sport 16v. A mate and I were in Birmingham a few years back and he needed to be home pretty sharpish. We did it in 1 hour flat in the Micra (99 mile trip:D  ). Still no-one believes us to this day:D Richard;)
  22. Sorry I missed this one:( It was only 10 minutes from my house and it looked a good turnout:cry: Unfortunately I had a friend's daughter's christening to attend. Still, I'm sure there will be others..... Richard;)

Hey MGTurbo, I've seen that too, a Maestro, wasn't it? Yes, it was damn fast. And if I rembember the Maestro Turbo was pretty quick in standard form. It was the fastest hot hatch for brief time during the 1980s, until the Astra GTE 16v came along. Still, the Metro, Maestro and Montego were spawn from the old Austin-Rover days when there looks and build quality were only just better than the Allegro they replaced;) Also, the Zed in standard form is a formidable beast (14.4 sec 1/4s) and many lesser cars need to be modified beyond belief to match its performance. A highly tuned Zed, like some members have here, will smash the 12.2 achieved by that MG. As for the Ferrari comparison, why not? Coupes will always look better than saloons and hatch-backs. Also it's a good thing that mainstream manufacturers build such cars (ZX, Supra, 3000GTO, RX7 etc) that canmatch Ferrari etc for looks and performance at a reasonable cost. Richard:)
  24. Amen to that, the Simpsons is without doubt the best program ever. I agree with Stuart (SRRAE) that there are too many quotes to list, but among my favourites are: Homer (In Colonel Homer) "......Marge, it takes two to lie, one to lie and one to listen....." Homer (at home when Flanders were singing hymns next door) "........Damn Flanders, singing again. I wish I was deaf....." The last temptation of Homer, when he's in the hotel room with Mindy: Mindy "Why are you upset?" Homer "Like you don't know, we are gonna have sex" Mindy "But we don't have to..." Homer "But the fortune cookie said so" Mindy "Homer, deserts aren't always right" Homer "But they're so sweet...." The Front, when Homer goes to his school reunion, gets rediculed for not graduating from high school and attends night school to get his diploma: Homer (to his brain) "......right, you don't like me and I don't like you so lets get through this and I can get back to killing you with beer...." Homer (tree house of horror, where Mr Burns is dracula) ".....Honestly Lisa, you and your stupid ideas. Bart's a vampire, beer rots brain-cells. Now let's go back....to that building....thingy......where our beds.....and TV..........is"
