No nothing sinsister just the customer supplied the belt as he had fallen for the "after market" hype that lots of these companies blab on about in their adverts, personally having seen how hard a life a standard Nissan belt can cope with why you need one that cost three times as much is beyond me. Cambelt Guessing Game
Ok here is little fun for all., check out the photo`s below, back in December 2005 I posted a couple of pics of the cambelts changed that year, and as you will see I even wondered what 2006 would bring. now for anyone who does not know, I have kept every single 300zx cambelt we have changed, each one is dated and the reg of the car added also, may seem odd I know but it works well with our admin and photographic records and provides a trail source of our work and assists members and new owners. POSTED 23-12-2005 For anyone remotely interested what 155 old 300zx cambelts look like, there you are, our tally for the year Wonder how many 2006 will bring Happy Holidays To All 31-10-09 So here again a few pics taken this morning very quickly but now at the new workshop. The photos below represent the belts changed in the last 14 months, how many do you think are there?? £10 by paypal to the first closest guess, remember the old amount and that was over 12 months and this is over 14, also we are in a better workshop now. Last two pics are part of our black museum of dead zed parts I will reveal the figure Sunday night, Good luck guys Jeff TT

Yes your correct in your understanding that the relative positioning between the cambelt marks and the sprocket marks are essential and the backing plate simply a guide. But in the case highlighted above the left hand camshaft is so far out there is no question it been a slight variance with the backing plate markings the belt marking is over an inch shy of the set marks so easy to see. Good point though, and happy to clear it up for you. Jeff

Nissan dealer service
Another one of those interesting dealer mistakes that have been sadly common over the years and given owners less and less faith in main dealer workshops. The zed in question is from Norway and has been to us previously ( last year ) that previous visit was prompted by the Nissan dealer who after changing the cambelt been unable to set the timing correctly? In fact following the belt change the owner had tried several garages in both Norway and Germany to resolve the errant timing problem that was causing poor performance and using excessive fuel. An Internet search brought him to us and we quickly identified a faulty cas unit that was retarding on acceleration and wandering on tickover, a £50 repair that cost him £1k in travel and air flights!! Ok so sorted and happy again for 12 months, moving on its back with us via a container this time as the owner is too busy to drive it over, having a general service and again a performance problem, very , very lumpy and overfueling, locally again his garages unable to find the problem. Ok no real biggy but easy to miss if the cambelt been changed by a dealer the previous year is considered a done deal. The first photo below reveals the problem, the cambelt timing on the inlet cam on the left is 3 teeth out, the belt a nice expensive Greedy one had been fitted with a new belt tensioner, but the tensioner base set position was incorrect meaning the adjuster had over the year become completely extended and unable to keep a good tension on the belt and had allowed the inlet timing to slip, the second photo shows the tensioner fully extended, the belt could be pulled off with out much force??? LUCKY !! I know its seems like a pain but is well worth checking belt timing when odd engine issues occur that seem difficult to resolve with the normal checks and setting up, don't assume its correct because its been changed especially by a dealer:x: Jeff

Thanks to Jeff and the crew at ZEDWORLD !!
Funny you mention that, have ordered the very tool for that job, up to eight microphones connect to different parts of the car like suspension tops, panels, chassis etc. all report back to a central control unit, with outside noise cancellation headphones on and someone else driving, you can select each microphone seperately, and with some clever elecronic wizard bits you can play with harmonic inputs /outputs to track down the source of the problem. :hyper: Expecting it to be with me next week so will give you a shout, you can be the first zed to have it done. Pod Dead
This is a common problem that oddly effects UK zeds more so than imports and can be caused by many different things but ends in the same symptoms. The rear of the fuse box in the footwell has a particular relay on the rear, this can fail due to old age, water ingress or loose connection and also a failed ignition switch. First test the ignition switch, a live supply output when the key is in position one ( accessory) if this is not present then the ign. switch or connections have failed, if an output does exist then onwards to the fuse board. Not the easiest of places to work in but the joys of working on zeds eh? Locate the wiper fuse and pull it out, checking with a multi meter set to volts dc there should be no power in either of the fuse connections, turn the key to position one and now one of those fuse connection should have power to it, if not the relay is not functioning. Remove the board by disconnecting the cable connectors at the front, remove the fixings to the accelerator cable and then undo the three 10mm fixings, pull the unit down and out and then disconnect the cables in the back. Now with the fuse box in your hand inspect for corrosion. loose relay and any burning etc. The relays can be removed from the back and tested seperately, if they are ok its very likely some of the connecting busbars inside of the unit have failed, although repairable at this point it may be easier to replace with a known good one. Hope that helps Jeff TT

GTO cambelt snapped!!
The general concensus on the GTO forum suggests the engine will of been damaged, here is a link to the GTO forum and a guide how to do the change http://www.gtouk.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=25802&highlight=cambelt+snapped Interesting and with photo`s nothing to loose by putting another belt on and spinning it over, in fact the 300zx engine should be damaged when a belt fails but rarely is so maybe the GTO engine can sometimes get away with it too?
