My car was laid up for approximately 4 years, I had similar issues when I finally fired her up again. Quite worrying for a while, but seemed to sort itself out after a couple of hundred miles or so. Maybe the seals deform when standing and settle back in after a few good runs?

Not sure if this is relevant, but I too had a bad drain on my TT. Turned out to be a corroded connector in the right hand side of the drivers footwell, beneath with the fuse box. It wasn't apparent at first, only found it when I dismantled the connector itself.

Did you manage to get any results from your compression test? I know what you mean about the spark plug threads, I don't like the sound of that at all. Definitely need to check them out somehow. Have you managed to cover any of the pointers from Jeff? Like the timing for example? (engine fully warmed up)
