With both cars to hand it is a simple swap over, in a workshop maybe 2 days, at home 3 to 4 days. Jeff

Code 34 - Can I use any det sensor?
The standard timing is 15 deg btdc the standard boost around 9 psi when the ecu see`s code 34 it closes the boost solenoids reducing bleed off, this increases boost on the actuator and so opens the waste gate sooner, you then have reduced boost normally around 5 psi. At the same time the ecu reduces the ignition timing value by 10 deg, this means your now running only 5dtdc which is of course 10 deg retarded, which is designed to save an engine from detonation if bad petrol or over boost occurs. As you have a boost controller fitted you are negating the boost level drop, however the ignition timing is still retarded so your boost controller can make more boost but the car will feel sluggish. The position of the cas unit should only ever be checked / adjusted with a strobe light, the ConZult or any other diagnostic only see`s the predicted timing for the set parameters not the actual timing, also a cas unit been central does not mean its correct, cam belt stretch etc will effect it. For testing purposes just fit a 1 meg ohm resister in place of the det sensor connector and check for clear code, take a drive and test for clear code again, if all ok I would then turn your boost controller down and reset it again. Code 34 - Can I use any det sensor?
Remember if your regulating boost by the controller you are circumventing the det sensors ability to reduce boost whenever code 34 is still present the ecu will be running a retarded 10 deg timing, hence the feeling of low power, boost alone does not give the power. Jeff

Disastrous discovery! how bad is it?
If you hell bent on changing it then be prepared to remove a lot of kit, one I did about 10 years ago: Jeff Old damaged one cut out surfaces cleaned and new one refitted welded in place.
-
Way off the mark?
FYI no need to remove the door panel, unclip the bottom, middle section lay on the floor look up behind the panel and you will see the old amplifier / relay and can reach and unplug it, pass the new one up and plug in, done. Good luck with the sale. Jeff

Gargling noise??
Try disconnecting the AIV solenoids electrical connection (circled in red in pic below ) that way they will not open and should be quiet then, remove later if you wish. Jeff

Running Lumpy . Calling all locals (Kent, Sheppey/Swale area)
If the sound you can hear is the clutch booster leaking, ( common issue ) the engine will run rough as its drawing air in through the ruptured booster. You can disconnect the booster vacuum feed or clamp it either way try it and if the noise stops / engine runs better you will know this is the problem. You can leave it disconnected but the clutch will feel harder to press, if the servo is leaking replacement is the only answer. Jeff

Disastrous discovery! how bad is it?
Defo give Guy a call, he has done many of the very repair you need and does it in place, replacement is a cut out and weld in new which labour cost is huge let alone £400 for the member and two wing ends. Jeff

Which exhaust sealant
Use the gasket as well as sealant, I use high temp clear silicone / Rtv and it seal`s very well, does not harden and drop out and can be dismantled later and clean up is quick. Jeff
-
My coolant temp goes way cold when driving downhill
Even bad connection on the sensor will do this and is more likey that than the thermostat if it is going to zero, engine movement will effect it be it on power or off power and the tilt of the car, check the single spade connector and the spade that is rivet to the sensor as these can work loose. Jeff

De-cats Help
Yes you will need gaskets, the old cats did in fact have seal rings as I have highlighted in your picture, do not use exhaust paste that goes hard like gun gum as the temps are so high it just dry`s out and falls away, use silicon exhaust sealer. Jeff

Superbowl Advert Z
....... and they still kept the rubbish headlights !!! is it the same car from the advert? the interior shot the radio arrangement is different, repainted to silver ? surely Nissan had silver ones, turbo bumper on a non turbo Mmm and not registered ? all smells a bit fishy to me Jeff

Zed sales patter
There are some howler adverts on Ebay at the moment, some of the sale cars are nothing less than scrap cars been sold as projects that could be worth £6k when you have done... yes spend £8k doing it up and it will be worth £6k doh! Anyhow copied and pasted a few save you looking through... enjoy !! 1) " So far it's had a full engine rebuild, and only driven 500miles before it was parked up. It needs the turbo`s replaced as they smoke. " Eh ? after a rebuild 2) "I was going to fix the turbo`s and do a full new paint job and sell for £6000" Eh? so buy for £2k (current bid) change turbo`s and repaint and goes up £4k in value ??? trouble is cost of the work is £4K + doh! 3) "Love the sound of those turbos spooling up. In the Z world they call these cars a flying kettle!" Who? said that ?? 4) "It has a misfire problem, everything was working when i last drove it." Erm how about the misfire problem? 5) "I bought this car 1 and a half years ago, but Unfortunatly i dont have a V5 never got round to applying for it." WELL DODGY !! 6) " Nissan 300 zx twin turbo convertible " No you will find that is a targa top zed not a convertible 7) "The hiecast , self leveling , 4 wheel steer seem to be ok" Self leveling ??????? 8) "becoming a desirable classic sports car to own as many of them in there heyday were written off " Rude !! I was an original owner 9) "i have taken her up and over the 130 mph on a private road i might say and even with the misfire " Great sales patter there ! 10) "Car has covered 167616 miles but truly does drive like new" Except for the twin turbo bumper on a non turbo that looks red under the grey paint 11) "last camberly change listed on the paper work was at 123000 miles" now 167,616 Best get that camberly changed soon I reckon ! 12) "Full JDM rear lights ( quite rare )" How odd an import would come with full jdm lights and how rare................NOT! ( same as UK one`s anyhow ) 13) "1992 UK K reg Nissan 300 3.0 ZX Targa Standard Features - Airbags, " No wrong ! no air bags.....tut tut trader should know better trade description act !! Given the amount of series 1 zeds with K plate and above on them its difficult for the new to zed owner to know if they got what they really paid for, ie series 2 price but a series 2 zed ! Hopefully no one here from the ads I looked at but if so just a bit of fun guys and good luck with the sales and purchases. Jeff

boost solenoids removed. pipework question
The start point with the boost solenoids fitted on a warm engine is around 9 psi as they bleed off around 2 to 3 psi when powered seen by the actuator to delay it opening the waste gate, when removed or not powered ( cold engine ) the actuator sees all the boost and so opens and thus the waste gate earlier giving lower boost of around 6 psi. Fitting boost jets in conjunction with the boost solenoids will allow up to 14 psi with the correct size jet, this sometimes takes some trial and error to get right, some cars need 8 mm jets some a 1.0mm jets and some a mix. Personally I always advocate keeping the boost solenoids in place, this way if det does occur ( bad petrol maybe) the solenoid`s can still cut the boost down to around 10 psi, and could save your engine, also the cold engine protection is still active. Fitting an electronic boost controller is a common method and still I would use the boost solenoids in conjunction with the boost controller for the above reason and it also means the controller solenoid has an easier life with lower duty % Jeff

Are all MAFS created equal?
- Good service!
Pity you had a week of rain though doh !! Not normally like that Jeff- Turbonoz trader
- Tunnel love
Turn your sound up and listen to audio heaven 5 litre V10 got to find me a tunnel to try this .........enjoy Jeff- Are all MAFS created equal?
FYI His name is Mark Kent see here >> http://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/Toy-mad-Mark-model-way-earn-living/story-11613776-detail/story.html Jeff- N/A ECU chip.?
Agree it improves driveability and makes for a slightly more responsive throttle, downsides? well non ! I fitted eproms to countless non turbo zed`s in my days and is very worth while, and I said don`t be looking for BHP increase because you looking at the wrong place its all about response and mild torque increases, oh and removes top speed limiter too. Jeff - Good service!
