hybrids vs stock turbos
Paul's definition is pretty much spot on, cheers bud ;) Also has to be said that even though you may think that your going to keep the car stock, when you go to sell and start plugging " Got new turbo's fitted mate" the customer would probaly be a lot happier knowing they are hybrids rather than new stocks as chances are he may want to to start on the road of modding, so in a sense a worth while future investment, whilst at the same time being stronger and quicker than what your used too. Maybe blowing me own trumpet here, BUT as fitting costs vary from £600 to around £1,000 depending on where you go and what else you do, once you fit new turbo's, you wanna know that they ain't coming off again, i now know of 4 people who have purchased else where and after time from 6 months to 19 months, the turbo's are off again because of problems. In 2 years of selling, i've had 1 turbo removed again, you may recall 300zx newbie (mark) had to have 1 removed after a very short time, i arranged for the turbo to be inspected completely and inspection report sent to me, a copy to mark and a copy to the relevant garage, it showed the damage was exactly as per the original stock one removed earlier which also identified what the cause was, the garage as you might expect were excepting no liability, so i had to sort it all out myself as i was the supplier. End result was the garage replaced the turbo at a really low cash price, i got another new turbo couried over to the garage once they agreed to diagnose something first and paid a reduced cost at trade for the turbo, money wise it cost Mark nowt, me it cost nearly 400 quid to rectify, the garage got a few quid for the labour, so everyones happy, especially the customer, as it should be. Point being, yer paying top dollar for one of the biggest jobs on a Zed, you NEED that back up and as i'm here day in day out and use the same turbo's myself, i can provide that back up. So far about 3 guys interested in a GB, if 2 more wish to take part i will see what price for deffo i can do, or Goodies i do that can be offered as well ;) cheers smithy, Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on..... you know it makes sense :D

Tricky timing
Right the feeler gauge bit, this uses no tech terms whatso ever :D :D On the side of the throttle body is a point where i believe you can alter the idle ? it is like a nut with a metal plate that springs down on top and you can lift it back, with me so far :D with the engine running, hooked up a sun tuning machine or similar, a feeler gauge is placed between this nut and plate i mentioned and a multimeter attached to the wire on TPS, by moving the switch/sensor a little up/down, forward/back you get different readings, move it until the reading is as per the book and tighten the sensor/switch little nuts up and remove feeler gauge. Watched him do it on 3 silvia's and 1 Zed that were either having problems with moving timing or fitting a new switch. cheers smithy I'm sure the techies out there will give a more accurate description :D

Tricky timing
Hi Rob, i know the AVC-R is a nice piece of kit, though i wouldn't rely on it to let you know the TPS is set correctly to begin with. Having watched a nissan mechanic do it a couple of times he used a feeler gauge, voltmeter jobbie and played with the revs a little, showed on his sun machine how the moving of the TPS altered various settings. In most Nissan manuals it shows how this is done. smithy

Tricky timing
Found on other Turbo'd Nissans i've had, if the TPS switch is not set correctly or worn internally, it slowly but surely advances the timing further on, so worth checking that out at the same time, just in case. smithy

hybrids vs stock turbos
Chuffin ell, if i go any lower i'd be on the floor :D I'm still using very old prices, gees... Check out a certain Nissan specialist in Essex, i'm hundreds cheaper than his cheapest Sold around 15 sets on this forum over the past 2 years, so if any of those guys are still members, sure they'll say how happy they were. However..... being ever so helpful as i am, i will gladly approach my supplier Turbo Dynamics and ask for em cheaper still, if i knew how many we were talking about, would have to be at least 4 or 5 though i would imagine, i could definately offer my goodies greatly discounted for a number of members who bought turbos, say hardpipe or rad kits at half price ? Always open to ideas, no women want in on a GB is there :D smithy

Cheap Tweak
I think the guy who designed it still works for Omex, Richard Ragg i think, he knows his Nissans cos he drives one :D SE would never say he supplied them the units  When i ran my Silvia with it in, **** was it quick, big difference in power, it also doubled up as thief deterrent, cos once unplugged from it's loom (inside the glove box) car wouldn't start, handy :D smithy

Cheap Tweak
Some years ago a guy who works for Omex designed a gadget for the S12 ( for SE Nissan) that allowed you to advance the timing quite abit for quicker acceleration, then retard it back at set points at higher boost and revs to avoid detonation, worked really well. Always wondered if it would or could be made for the Zed. Wouldn't reccomend anyone advancing the timing unless you got soemthing that can alter it automatically further on the rev band, Not good :( smithy

turbo inspection
Checking for excess oil residue in the back of the turbo where it connects to the turbo short downpipe is the best you can do, not to difficult usually. smithy

will duff turbo seals damage my engine?
Mark, pretty sure Sub's breather kit is also ....erm... Turbo Technics  smithy

will duff turbo seals damage my engine?
Martin, no reason at all to cause engine damage that i can think off, oil that is within the turbo to float the bearings is seaping past the rear seal and when you are on idle or slowing down with the rear turbo wheel barely spinning it's allowing the oil into the very hot turbo down pipe and exhaust which causes the smoke, it gets worse (smoke) but that's about it. Fraid it's a common thing on turbo's with a bit of mileage on and the cars just been de-catted, it's the cats that keep the back pressure there which in turn keeps a nice tight seal on the rear turbo seal, even been a few cases lately of turbo's only a couple years old doing this, cos they didn't buy them from me :D :D cheers smithy

Main Beam on all the time
Mine done the same, except it was the fuse in the relay box in engine bay passenger side, it tells you on top of the lid which fuse is lights, whip it out and change, should then be sorted, that's if Paul's idea don't work :D smithy

Big Jap meet in the I.O.M
Check this out, many clubs have been over here before, so the ole Zeds are lacking behind, could be a great weekend. cheers smithy http://www.aimoo.com/forum/postview.cfm?id=308930&CategoryID=28809&ThreadID=978753

Nomad A pillar pods
Yep i used too, designed and commissioned nomad to make em about 2 years ago and despite advertising they are available trade only (cos of the work involved in getting them right) he sells them to Joe public for less that the reccomended retail price, just like billing, slowness as well done me nut in, so i don't bother now. Thanks anyways Paul smithy

sub fan relay
No probs Ed, if yer warrenty pays a grand for newies, which is cheaper than Nissan ones, you'll get hybrids with the stagger gap seals and just send your old knackered ones back to my supplier, turbo dynamics so they can be canabolised :D smithy
-
sub fan relay
Eddy, i can can offer bigger discounts on the hybrids as oppossed to the stock ones, stocks delivered are £925 all in, hybrids are only an extra 75 quid a piece all in, So if the warrenty paid for em, they wouldn't even know they were hybrids at that price.... ALL my tubs come with the stagger gap rear seal in em as well. Can mail you the excact spec if yer wish, and hybrids at this price will happily take the mid 400's at upto 1.5 bar ( subject to correct fuelling air/mixture) cheers smithy
-
sub fan relay
Eddy, depends on what you mean as the sub fan, in my book i refer to the elecy fan that comes on when you start to overheat as the sub fan, (it sits the other side of the rad) it also comes on if it detects certain engine/ecu faults, as for relays, as far as i know it's in the box in engine bay passenger side, next to one of yer intake pipes. Has no effect on the turbo's though, neither of the fans do. By bridging the wires on the temp sender unit, it should fire up, just as a test of course :D smithy

Replacement Turbos.
Guys please remember that the Zed relies on back pressure to keep the rear seal in place, if you have de-catted or will in the future, consider this, you don't want to be pullin the engine again in a couple of years to do the job again, look at my area in the traders section to see what tubs i supply, but more importantly the rear seals i make sure are supplied on all Zed turbo's, in over 2 years of supplying tubs have i never had a rear seal go. We have seen on this forum that other suppliers turbo's very well known too, are barely making 24 months. This is a very important and probably the biggest purchase/repair on a Zed, so do it right ;) cheers smithy

oil smoke question
Vijay, i meant to ask, are they from Turbo technics ? wouldn't be the first to have problems with tubs and only small mileage. Anyone heard how Subs is getting on with his turbo's going back to them ? cheers smithy
-
smokin
It's not so much when you boot it, it's after you boot it then just completly ease off and look for smoke, the smoke is caused when oil seeps into the down pipes which happens as the turbo starts to slow down and stops spinning. smithy

At what temp is your radiator water too hot?
Even though the stock gauge can be highly inaccurate, it would still show a high temp the same as your aftermarket one, hence there has to be another reason the aftermarket one is going nuts ! Did you check yer electric fan and wires by crossing them to see if it will actaully work ? again it won'y work on it's own, if the stock sensors are reading correctly, showing that it is a fault with the aftermarket set up as suspected. smithy

lowering springs
Giggle, easily available, gees even Demon tweeks sell em :D Eibachs are quite good and cost wise okay as well, Blitz are very good, but if not in stock then go for any of the other at least 3 makes available, oh and SE stock em too. cheers smithy

At what temp is your radiator water too hot?
Stu, the electric fan is so rarely used it's almost redundant ;) The ONLY time mine has come on is during engine probs, never in busy traffic, in heat either. There is a way of testing the fan itself and it's power source by bridging 2 wires that go to it, the fan should come on, if it doesn't then yes something needs replacing. With yer viscous fan going all the time don't panic on that side of things just yet. Could be s ticky thermostat approx 10-15 quid to change or the dreaded temp sensor electrical side of things, i take it the stock one has not been connected with your aftermarket one ? Is the viscous fan going all the time ? Sure AndyZ would have a spare electric one if needed, cos hardly any fooker asks for one :D cheers smithy

GB on shiny bits
Check out my traders section for possible group buy, just in time for Trax. cheers smithy

for Steve E
Just a thought, before or maybe after you bought the car, did it ever have an SE boost upgrade ? they bleed of from the turbo's to gain more boost and if it's still connected, then you'll have to disconnect to lower the boost. You can't have both anyways. Look down to the turbo's from the top of the engine and if you see a small black hose hanging around by itself, one end connected to the turbo hoses and the other end not, then it's got this boost upgrade. If not look for spilts in that area, there are only 2 small hoses. smithy
