You can use, sikaflex to bond it, P40 fibreglass filler to help in the joins between the 2 and then plastic bumper filler, which is more flexible than P38 body filler. I wouldnt use a smoke machine and although water based fluid, they can leave a greasy residue. As suggested use the plummers smoke pellets or a similar dry system. Even on the lowest setting a smoke machine might produce far more smoke than you require.

No there is nothing there for it to get snarled up in, it will have dropped onto the lower plenum or behind the fuel rail, no biggy. Get one of those extendable magnet gadgets, it looks like a pen that extends, really handy for these sort of situations.
