Standered radio/cd setup
Some Zeds had a Bose system fitted. This did indeed have the amps fitted individually to each speaker. Bose is a bit weird all round and does lots of things non-standard. Other Zeds (eg my S3 and I suspect my S1 as well) didn't have a Bose but did have a rear speaker amp. One way to tell is look at the original Nissan units which I guess isn't practical for you. These guys http://www.carstereohelp.com/strnissan.htm have some pics look half way down the page for 300ZX and a Bose speaker looks like this so clearly you don't have these any more. My guess is that you need to check that 6 way connector on the harness. If it just has the 4 rear speaker wires, then you either had a Bose (and the speakers were replaced with your Harman Infinities) or didn't have a rear speaker amp. If it has the grey and green silver in addition, then these are the ones which activate the rear speaker amp. If so, your car used to have one and now all we need to do is find it or find where it used to be!

Standard recircs.......
Not in psi but this guy sees it if you are aiming for 600bhp+ http://www.twinturbo.net/nissan/300zx/FAQ/FAQpages/bov.html This thread implies 12psi http://www.twinturbo.net/net/viewmsg.aspx?forum=technical&msg_id=837615&forum=technical&dtSearch=0 and this ones says the modded ones will go to 20 http://www.twinturbo.net/net/viewmsg.aspx?forum=general&msg_id=2268319 but there are technical discussions as to if this ruins the effect of recircs and makes them as bad as BOVs.

Hmm. The manual pic isn't clear but it does seem to show something like that in the tailgate "power antenna timer". The "radio rear amplifier" is in a different place next to the ABS Actuator. Don't know where, sorry. But it looks as if it might be to the right of the boot rather than in the tailgate. I wonder if RHD layout is mirror image? I'll drop someone I know an email. If you end up needing a code or a repair for the CD, this guy seems to know what he's talking about http://www.dndservices.co.uk/ when I was trying to work out how to get the OEM kit to work in mine, he was helpful. As it turned out, it was the wiring bodge responsible and code not needed. But if I did need a code, I'd go to him. A little more thought: perhaps it was there but has been removed can you see where the wiring goes from the speakers - does that give a clue? perhaps it wasn't fitted OEM? Do you have the pair of wires in the 6way connector on the harness. It's the one where the 4 rear speakers are driven from. If the harness connector has 4 wires (2 for each rear speaker) plus a gray earth and green/silver stripe, then these two are for the rear amp. If that harness only has 4 wires, then a rear amp wasn 't fitted - that's my guess, anyway.

Having bought so many other cars and hated them, who has an N/A LWB for sale?!
Thanks for the mention Richard. Sorry, but someone's shaken hands on a purchase so not for sale atm. And you're right, LEO is an auto. Good luck, Janus.

OK. I'll be interested if you get a chance to confirm / have pics. Like a dimwit I lost the pics I took after I tidied up the S3 (which had standard connectors like yours) in the centre console. And I've never found the rear amp phsically - just got my S3 one back in operation by taking our all the bodged wiring and putting back the OEM stereo. The 1996 workshop manual doesn't list the rear speaker amp so that matches with my S6 not having one (and maybe all the late cars, i.e. the Micra harness ones but that's just a guess). Most people whip out the standard Nissan stereo from their JDM and bung in a normal one, then find out the rear speakers don't work then bodge. Either bypass the amp or run new wires. Me, I would prefer to get the OEM working the way Nissan intended if it's poss. They do look better / more in keeping with the car anyway in general. So would be interested to know if your car does have a rear amp where the manual says it should be and what the bypass looks like - maybe the amp is still in working order with a spot of luck...

trying out my new camera.
From the pics, that would be believable. But for certain, what do the numbers say on them? You may notice they've got L and R on them... insert C&A knickers joke here Happens to us all - it was three years before someone here pointed it out to me and you'd be surprised how many other Zeds have mixed up wheels. They're sculpted the way they are to guide more cooling air over the brake discs and calipers. Non OEM wheels or OEM wheels fitted on the wrong sides don't do this.

Looks like it's next to the ABS actuator. There are differences between the JDMs/Europe etc but so far, this is the only reference I can find.

Ahah. Got a pic of that somewhere but in the meantime, take out your rear speakers and see what connections they've got. At the dash end, are you certain the rear speaker feed is going into the harness OK and there aren't any odd-looking bypasses? If not, that would finger the bypass being at the amp. Hang on a tic.

Errm, while we're being pedantically picky, your wheels are the wrong way round... In fact, unless I squinted too hard, it looks as if you've got one wheel for the right side and three wheels for the left. And I'm not certain but you might have at least one UK rear but from the angle the dishing (in or out) is a bit hard to spot. How to tell for certain? What are the part numbers on the wheels? There's a big clue in them...

Standered radio/cd setup
OK, I'll try to post more in a while but IF the rear speakers work OK with the Goodmans but are only very quiet with the Nissan, then someone's bypassed the rear speaker amp. On my S3, a "normal" Sony head unit gave normal vol out of the front and very loud out of the back. Took that out and put in Nissan, normal vol out of both front and rear. Of course, the Nissan units are designed to use the rear amp so this is what you'd expect. If the rear amp has been bypassed, "normal" head unit will be OK vol on rear but Nissan won't be giving enough drive to the rear speakers without the amp it's expecting to be there.

OK. Did the rear speakers work OK with the Goodmans unit?

No you won't need an adaptor. Micra style is "late" (94 or 95 onward). My S3 has normal type. First guess is someone has fried or bypassed the rear amplifier. Do your units look like this on the back: And what did you have in there before?

Gary, what's your issue? This may help: http://www.300zxtt.co.uk/techaudio.html I've also got a lot more info I haven't had time to post.

Took the z out?! Not too happy she is not
Hate to say it but there are rarely quick short-cuts to diagnosing this sort of thing with Zeds - there are so many sensors and potential causes. To do it properly, work through the manual trouble diagnosis http://www.300zx.co.uk/cgi-bin/manual.cgi?list=efec&dir=&config=&refresh=&slide=42&cycle=off&scale=0&design=default&total=190 You should see if there are any fault codes in the ECU. You cna do this via Consult, ConZult or the manual method is here http://www.ttzd.com/tech/diagnostictech.html with, in case you need, autobox code diagnosis here http://www.twinturbo.net/nissan/300zx/tech/autodiag/autodiag.html More tech how-tos are here http://www.twinturbo.net/nissan/300zx/tech/tech.aspx Lastly, you said Have you got an induction kit? If so, might be damp getting at the MAF.

Windsor Classic Car Show Sun 19th June 2011
For those of us at a loose end within easy reach of Windsor for Sunday. Just found this in the local rag. It's tomorrow so I might just drag the Zed there if the weather's nice. And it's free. http://www.maidenhead-advertiser.co.uk/news/article-21497-vintage-cars-will-roll-into-windsor-farm-shop/ http://www.windsorfarmshop.co.uk/page5106/classic-car-show-2011.aspx And found a video of last year's There is also beer (for passengers only, of course) http://www.webrew.co.uk/

Is it only 2nd hand now
Mike at MJP knows more about 300ZX parts (and the rest of the Zs as well) than most (all?) Nissan dealers. If he can't help. there are a few well-regarded US 300ZX specialists who can supply loads of stuff. I've used ConceptZ, Courtesy and other members have good stories about others. But be warned, they won't be able to help with many RHD specific bits for obvious reasons! Good rule of thumb, check MJP first.

Yes, think the overspray could have reached the next county! I never bothered with my previous 2 Zeds but with this one - and if you've just done a big rust repair job and if you're going to keep the car - it's a bit of peace of mind to invest in some protection...

I told 'em they should have done more pics!

150mph tankslapper in a Scooby IoM TT
Bummer, sorry missed that, must pay more attention, slapped wrists. (PS can anyone tell me why I can't see the YouTube links above - are they working? Have I used the wrong code or do I need to beat up my browser settings?)

Oem Fob
No. From 94 onward. Don't know exactly when but my Blue S3 has it. The one that's for sale. Standard for a while then optional for S5 and S6. http://www.300zx.org.uk/model_variations.htm http://www.twinturbo.net/ttnetfaq/FAQpages/differences.html Oh, and PS, the frequencies used by Japanese keyless entry and USA are not legal in UK. You can get replacements but if you have a decent UK-legal Thatcham Cat 1 with keyless entry, that'll solve the problem.

Sudesh's 99 spec TT Zed
This is, as Gary says, an absolutely stunning car. I only didn't buy it because I particularly wanted an NA. A little more mileage than my NA but it's a minter. I did a full BIMTA check on mine and the mileage was certified plus the chassis number and all paperwork were 100%. This one comes from the same source. Plus Sudesh is very straightforward, good to deal with. If anyone in the club buys it and wants a hand with the registration process, VAT docs etc, I'll be happy to help. And if you haven't subscribed, subscribe and then I'll help!
