  1. The turbos are designed to run at the exhaust gas temp and don't forget this heat is coming from inside the turbo so the fan, bearings etc are already at this temp. Thermodynamically speaking, keeping these gases hot (i.e. not allowing them to get cooled by a cool turbo) is better. A quick google found this site - yes it's trying to sell their product, but the info seems to be pretty much logical. http://ptpturboblankets.com/why_turbo_blankets.php For demonstrative purposes only. Please do not try this at home. It's never a good idea to place a hand on an engine that is running . . .
  2. Good question but almost impossible to answer! Don't take the years / series as definitive but this may help: http://www.300zx.org.uk/model_variations.htm
  3. The converter unit will change from the time it is fitted. So unless you do something at that time, it will have read km up to then and will record mph from then on. Some clocks can be adjusted to wind the km figure back to being the mph figure but I would only trust that if it came from a recognised trustworthy chap like Jeff TT who did my previous ones. But if you don't clock it, your total will be a figure that was part km and part m. If what you're saying is that you have Japanese clocks (without a converter so still reading kph) and the odometer is reading 091838 then that will be in km and that converts to 91838/1.609 as 57,078m If you have Japanese clocks and fitted a converter from kph to mph at some time in the past, you need to know what the odometer read at the time you fitted the converter to be able to work out the mileage figure from 91383.
  4. Zs come from Series 1 to Series 6. http://www.300zx.org.uk/model_variations.htm Yours certainly has the turbo front bumper. But could well have been a replacement.
  5. Boost gauge is in indeed on the left in the speedo and not on the right in the tacho (where the oil pressure is). The boost gauge was deleted (on TT) S4 and S5 The fabric and 3 point came in at S2 That spoiler came in on S3 - S5 Oh, PS, there are always exceptions!
  6. A Zed on Guernsey - it's only 5 miles wide! Are you going to give it a go up Val des Terres or just polish it up and pose in the traffic jam along the seafront? Hope you have fun either way. :thumbup1:
  7. They do include fuel in the set of figures http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29444904 The key performance figure for any retail shop is "like-for-like" sales: that allows for stores they open / close. In fact, if you are in retail, you'd even be looking at "sales per sq ft" (or profit) to look at the performance of every bit of your store. But "like-for-like" allows analysts / shareholders / the market to look at how this company is performing and compare that to the competition. Not every Sainsbury's has a petrol station. Plus fuel is very volatile (hoho) so if the price of petrol goes up, the turnover goes up and that's got nothing to do with "how well does this company sell petrol". So if you're looking at the headline performance of a retail company, like-for-like is what you want - and if you want to know everything else including fuel, that'll be in the report somewhere.
  8. The people referenced in this article as those proven innocent are: Jimmy Tarbuck, Freddie Starr and Nigel Evans MP. I am happy to believe the court's verdict. I do not believe any of these three people need special treatment or protection: they have money, political connections, PR agencies, can afford lawyers and, in general, can look after themselves. It is society's reponsibility to look after those less fortunate and if that means protecting the weak more than the strong, that's what being human means.
  9. It's about time that men (it's not always men but typically it is) realised that "no" means "no". It's unfortunate that many powerful people over the ages have used their power / status to get away with appalling behaviour (whether sexual or not). It's about time that people who benefit from the trappings of power / celebrity took the responsibility that comes with it: not just "don't be a dick" but also "don't behave in a way that makes you look like a dick". If you claim to be a human being, you need to treat those around you with respect. If you're not sure, don't assume their acquiescence means "yes". If you're not 100% sure, you're a real sh*t if you go any further. (and if you think that's extreme, imagine any of this happening to one you love on the receiving end: mother / wife / daughter /son - you would expect, and rightly so, the other party to be very sure of their willingness, wouldn't you?). Someone brighter than I once defined an arsehole as someone who knows what the rules are but assumes that they don't apply to him. If there is ever a case where the "alleged victim" is a powerful, media-savvy person and the perpetrator is young, naive and weak, then maybe I'll allow that victims should not be anonymous. All the cases so far referenced here don't show this to be the case. Or in other words, keep it zipped and keep your hands to yourself. If you're in the public eye, you need to do this double - if you don't like the standards, don't take the fame.
  10. You can do it monthly but only for tax from 1 Nov. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-changes The logic seems to be that October tax needed to be paid for before October started - so you can't start a Direct Debit now for tax that (being pedantic) needed to be backdated to 00:00. Plus the new system allowing DD for monthly only came in on 1st Oct and you should get tax for Oct in Sept (which is before the new system came in). Don't get me wrong - I remember the old joke Q: how do you confuse the DVLA? A: ring em up and ask them what day it is. But I'd never wait til this late to get my new tax disk because of the hordes of OAPs painstakingly counting out their pensions in the PO :)
  11. Erm, if you needed tax from end of Sept to be valid from 00:00 1st Oct, you could have done it anytime in Sept and if you need tax from end Oct, you still have a month to do it. I know we all get busy and leave things till last moment (and yes, they are having probs with weight of demand) but even so...
  12. 11 amazing facts about the tax disc http://sniffpetrol.com/2014/10/01/11-amazing-facts-about-the-tax-disc/ 10. The aftermarket tax disc holder was a popular method for motorists to express their individuality. For example, a silver metal holder with fake Allen bolts on it was an unbeatable way of indicating you were a weasel-faced tit with a badly modified Saxo.
  13. When I worked for Kawasaki, Team Green's method of running in their race bikes was described as 1) take it out of the crate 2) assemble, add fluids 3) start it 4) twist throttle to full a couple of times 5) er, that's it Modern manufacturing tolerances are so good these days that the bedding-in of bearings, piston rings etc isn't generally necessary - they all fit together properly on delivery from the suppllier.
  14. @madkiwi - that's two experts advising to temporarily retard base timing and see if safety boost occurs. I've not met Noz but I have met lymon and followed his advice before - since they agree, for me it would be a no-brainer. @noz - ta. Given what is known / measurable "I *think* the ECU will use the knock maps until the car is switched off and on again. " makes sense and is a reasonable hypothesis. Wouldn't make sense for the ECU to switch in and out of maps at 3,200 (which is what it would do if it only monitored knock circuit realtime).
  15. Good idea, that. I think the Aussies do similar from time to time.

  22. Apologies for the thread hijack - but I hope the detail on knock / safety boost is at least marginally relevant / interesting. It is to me anyway ;) 1) The knock sensor only looks for det below 3,200 rpm because above that rpm it's too noisy 2) The ECU uses knock maps a) if the sensor detects knock below 3,200 or b) if the knock sensor circuit is inop (Error 34) => if you get det over 3,200 rpm and your knock sensor is working, the ECU does NOT go into knock map/safety boost 3) If sensor detects knock, TT uses knock maps (if European/UK - but not JDM/US. Or rather the knock maps for JDM/US are the same as normal) AND goes into safety boost. NA uses knock maps (TT and NA have different maps to begin with, obviously) 4) When does the ECU go back to normal maps/boost? If I have knock below 3,200, knock maps used. The sensor is not used over 3,200 rpm so what happens when I reach those revs? 5) It's odd that there is no code or readout either as normal or even if you're using ECUTalk / ConZult (IIRC) to tell you if the ECU is using safety boost / knock maps. 6) The only way to tell if ECU is using knock maps is by detecting the power difference (which is a tad difficult if you bought a Zed in safety mode already) if you haven't done the LED / buzzer thing posited by Eggs/Noz Do I have that right, Noz? When does the High Gear map get used and is it different Man/Auto, by market? I used faithfully to use VPower in all my Zeds but the last time I did an extended (several months) comparison, there was no discernable (recordable) difference between VPower and ordinary Shell as for mpg so I've not bothered for the past year or so. This is all for stock NA used as daily driver.
  23. Right, so I understand that the 34 code reflects the state of the detonation sensor circuit as opposed to the instance of detonation. 1) How do you know that you're in safety boost (I ask for historical reasons as that happened to my first Zed and then replaced the knock sensor. That's the last time I go to JAE. Thanks Eric :D ) 2) How does this apply to NAs? Obviously no safety boost but does it do anything else?
  24. If the knock sensor was detecting detonation, would it not show up in the error codes? So has the knock sensor been bypassed? If the knock sensor is not bypassed, if it was faulty, would it not show up in the codes? Reason for asking is that if the knock sensor is fitted and working as Nissan intended, and the ECU Error codes do not show it's been triggered, maybe whatever the guy is seeing isn't detonation? If the knock sensor has been bypassed than the above does not apply, of course.
  25. Ah, whoops, didn't spot that in your pic. :blushing:
