  5. OK guys we have a plan for the Saturday For the illuminations run we are gonna meet at the Village Urban Resort, East Park Drive , Blackpool, FY3 8LL We will be leaving there at 6pm in a convoy heading up to Bispham where the illuminations start at the north end. If you want to join this convoy please meet by 6pm At Bispham we wil stop for Fish and Chips at the Bispham Kitchen, Red Bank Road, Bispham before starting the run through the illuminations. (see map below) We should be at the chippy around 6:30pm or so. If anyone wants to meet directly there with the rest of us then please be there around that time. Hopefully we will have chance get some pics and then start our run through the illuminations about 7:15pm or so depending how well we did with the timekeeping so far lol With a bit of luck we may get a photo opportunity at the big Mirror Ball south of Blackpool. I'll bring my DSLR and a tripod so hopefully we can get some good pics. Hopefully that time table suits everyone? Anyone interested in driving down to Lytham St Annes for a saturday lunchtime photo shoot as well please let me know and we can organise that too, about 1pm Rich

  19. I was having a discussion with a friend about why car engines need back pressure a from a point of view of physics (I did physics at college not mechanics lol) it did not make any sense to my as the idea I would have thought is that you need to get rid of exhaust gasses as quick as possible Anyway I did a google and found this article. This seems to make perfect sense from a physics point of view but my mate is now saying he never heard of such a thing and all the car forums he has ever been on say you need back pressure to make the engine run efficiently so you must need it (without being able to explain to me why) So some experts here can surely read this and settle the argument Cheers Backpressure: The myth and why it's wrong. I. Introduction One of the most misunderstood concepts in exhaust theory is backpressure. People love to talk about backpressure on message boards with no real understanding of what it is and what it's consequences are. I'm sure many of you have heard or read the phrase "Hondas need backpressure" when discussing exhaust upgrades. That phrase is in fact completely inaccurate and a wholly misguided notion. II. Some basic exhaust theory Your exhaust system is designed to evacuate gases from the combustion chamber quickly and efficently. Exhaust gases are not produced in a smooth stream; exhaust gases originate in pulses. A 4 cylinder motor will have 4 distinct pulses per complete engine cycle, a 6 cylinder has 6 pules and so on. The more pulses that are produced, the more continuous the exhaust flow. Backpressure can be loosely defined as the resistance to positive flow - in this case, the resistance to positive flow of the exhaust stream. III. Backpressure and velocity Some people operate under the misguided notion that wider pipes are more effective at clearing the combustion chamber than narrower pipes. It's not hard to see how this misconception is appealing - wider pipes have the capability to flow more than narrower pipes. So if they have the ability to flow more, why isn't "wider is better" a good rule of thumb for exhaust upgrading? In a word - VELOCITY. I'm sure that all of you have at one time used a garden hose w/o a spray nozzle on it. If you let the water just run unrestricted out of the house it flows at a rather slow rate. However, if you take your finger and cover part of the opening, the water will flow out at a much much faster rate. The astute exhaust designer knows that you must balance flow capacity with velocity. You want the exhaust gases to exit the chamber and speed along at the highest velocity possible - you want a FAST exhaust stream. If you have two exhaust pulses of equal volume, one in a 2" pipe and one in a 3" pipe, the pulse in the 2" pipe will be traveling considerably FASTER than the pulse in the 3" pipe. While it is true that the narrower the pipe, the higher the velocity of the exiting gases, you want make sure the pipe is wide enough so that there is as little backpressure as possible while maintaining suitable exhaust gas velocity. Backpressure in it's most extreme form can lead to reversion of the exhaust stream - that is to say the exhaust flows backwards, which is not good. The trick is to have a pipe that that is as narrow as possible while having as close to zero backpressure as possible at the RPM range you want your power band to be located at. Exhaust pipe diameters are best suited to a particular RPM range. A smaller pipe diameter will produce higher exhaust velocities at a lower RPM but create unacceptably high amounts of backpressure at high rpm. Thus if your powerband is located 2-3000 RPM you'd want a narrower pipe than if your powerband is located at 8-9000RPM. Many engineers try to work around the RPM specific nature of pipe diameters by using setups that are capable of creating a similar effect as a change in pipe diameter on the fly. The most advanced is Ferrari's which consists of two exhaust paths after the header - at low RPM only one path is open to maintain exhaust velocity, but as RPM climbs and exhaust volume increases, the second path is opened to curb backpressure - since there is greater exhaust volume there is no loss in flow velocity. BMW and Nissan use a simpler and less effective method - there is a single exhaust path to the muffler; the muffler has two paths; one path is closed at low RPM but both are open at high RPM. IV. So how did this myth come to be? I often wonder how the myth "Hondas need backpressure" came to be. Mostly I believe it is a misunderstanding of what is going on with the exhaust stream as pipe diameters change. For instance, someone with a civic decides he's going to uprade his exhaust with a 3" diameter piping. Once it's installed the owner notices that he seems to have lost a good bit of power throughout the powerband. He makes the connections in the following manner: "My wider exhaust eliminated all backpressure but I lost power, therefore the motor must need some backpressure in order to make power." What he did not realize is that he killed off all his flow velocity by using such a ridiculously wide pipe. It would have been possible for him to achieve close to zero backpressure with a much narrower pipe - in that way he would not have lost all his flow velocity. V. So why is exhaust velocity so important? The faster an exhaust pulse moves, the better it can scavenge out all of the spent gasses during valve overlap. The guiding principles of exhaust pulse scavenging are a bit beyond the scope of this doc but the general idea is a fast moving pulse creates a low pressure area behind it. This low pressure area acts as a vacuum and draws along the air behind it. A similar example would be a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on a dusty road. There is a low pressure area immediately behind the moving vehicle - dust particles get sucked into this low pressure area causing it to collect on the back of the vehicle. This effect is most noticeable on vans and hatchbacks which tend to create large trailing low pressure areas - giving rise to the numerous "wash me please" messages written in the thickly collected dust on the rear door(s). VI. Conclusion. SO it turns out that Hondas don't need backpressure, they need as high a flow velocity as possible with as little backpressure as possible. written by HCF
  20. SteveE Yeah I totally agree with that and the car is gonna need probably three remaps minimum as the project evolves..... so this shoud provide some interesting figures for others Build thread coming up - supervised by Silverline if that is OK with Steve as he is without doubt the expert Went down and had a good and long chat with him today in person, reckons we could hit a lot of BHP in the end... Never know maybe Noz would even give me a little discount as things progress in the interests of research  I'm along for the ride, so to speak! Let's see where we go Rich
  21. Guys - I hear what you are saying about upgraded SMICs and manifolds and I totally agree - all this was in the planning, the idea was to do the induction exhaust injectors to get the best out of my stock turbos, then upgrade the turbos when I get that other engine rebuilt - and I expected to take a year or more to do that Either way the car was gonna need at least two remaps, remember at the moment it is overfuelling However - recent events have tipped my hand so I am going down the route of upgrading the turbos now, I realise I won't get the full benifit from them yet, but it is the only sensible way forward other than risking more second hand tubs! Because of that I have over stretched myself financially making this decision - so the other nice things will just have to wait a little while even if it is just a few hundred quid. Once done I will get the car mapped so it is running best as it can with the turbos.... After that stage two will be Induction, SMICs, Exhaust and it will need another remap I would think Then third stage get that other engine rebuilt, fit larger injectors and the AMS manifolds then drop it in and a final remap To my understanding that seems a reasonable approach given my current starting point and keeps the car on the road most of the time
  22. Cheers Mark Silverline Steve also sorted the the parts needed to fit them I'm keeping the stock manifolds on for now just to keep the cost managable, intending to upgrade those when I get my spare engine rebuilt and fitted as it is another good time to change them Before that it will be a remap with the new turbos fitted, then next stage to be induction, intercoolers & exhaust After that onto the spare engine. This is not gonna be an overnight upgrade... expect it to be a project planned over a long period of time as funds allow, the idea being to keep the car on the road as much as possible while work progresses Guess I should start a build thread with lots of pics as the project begins Rich
  23. Cheers guys I had already chatted with Silverline and had a price on the GTX2860s Not cheap - but to be honest the cost of refurbing even one of my old ones (the other seems pretty sound TBH) turned out to be just too much to make it a sensible choice So on recommendation from Silverline, and Mark on this thread, I've bitten the bullet (although it was someway over my intended budget) and my car is having nice shiny new GTX2860s fitted next week which I hope will finally put this problem to bed for once and for all May as well get my nice shiny Zeta-Rs and adjustable tension rods fitted while I am at it, they have been sitting here in the box for a week or so Will be ready before the Blackpool Illuminations run  That just leaves the Rocker Cover oil leak and cracked viscous fan problem to fix Anyone got an official 'Nissan Moneypit' badge for sale lol :helpsmilie:
  24. I'm probably in the market to upgrade my turbos (and no one seems to advise me about this on my 'lots of white smoke' thread if you want to read the history) So politics and recent events aside........ do you run upgraded turbos on your Z and what would you advise? Personally I am after maximum acceleration rather than brute power, if that helps to narrow things down...... so something that will spool super fast and give it a damn good kick is what I want! So far, from advice, GTX 2860's have been reccomended Before anyone points it out.... Yeah I know to get the full benefit I would have to upgrade induction/intercoolers/injectors/exhaust but I am considering now the best turbo upgrade to give the max out of future upgrades to support them, if you get the idea..... Other than that I will refurb my stock turbos instead and upgrade them later once I've done the rest of the work (and hopefully get some money back on the refurbs) decision time......
  25. Had a chat with Silverlinie today - there isn't an oil supply problem to the turbos and the oil leak on the nearside turbo was on the oil supply pipe, but it was not enough of a leak to have caused the failure so I was told Moving forwards, I've now got a price on a pair of GTX2860's if I am going to replace the turbos with new and upgrade at the same time then I will probably fit these as they come highly recommended for power vs spool time I also will have a price in the morning from OD to refurbish one or two of my old turbos (or fit new cores) if possible, and then I can make a decision and get on with sorting this mess out as I don't think the smoking nearside turbo (my third turbo failure) is gonna last very much longer before something really bad happens to it PS the wing mirrors are Ganador - bought off Zedworld second hand
