PCVs this ones a bit odd
Whilst pratting around today making the car work again (thank god I finally got it running properly) I noticed the passenger side PCV doesnt seem to be connected properly, the clip is missing and the PCV end of the hose has seems to have swollen up with heat (possibly) it kinda sits loosly over the end of the PCV now... car seems to be running fine, was running super rich and burning a little oil with all the messing around with running on 5 then 4 then 5 again and now a nice sweet 6! Got a bit of a smoke screen for the first couple of miles then it all cleared up and was fine. I would have thought a non-functioning PCV would give me a seriously rough idle??? will order some new valves and hoses but should I drive with it like it is?

not firing on all cylinders :(
OK scratch it all, I am now the pround owner of a working 300zx !!! woooo hoooo!!! amazing what you can achieve with a little fiddling!!! :D On putting the plug and coilpack back in the cylinder started working again!! Massive smoke screen from the exhaust had me worried for a bit but a quick spin and it seemed to clear up a treat!! seemed to be running rich and also burning a little oil?? make sense to anybody?

not firing on all cylinders :(
slight update, had a bit o help from a neighbour and there is defo a current going to the coilpack and we pulled the pack and there was a spark there when turning the engine over... so whats left? injector, injector connector, fooked or stuck valve?? which is the most likely culprit and any idea how to check them? cheers

not firing on all cylinders :(
Reeto, slapped my new PTU on, she starts ok now (with a bit of persuading cos the CAS plug keeps falling off, (didnt know it wouldnt start with this unplugged??)) When she is running im not getting a spark on all six, I think I've tracked it down to the middle left (as you look at the car standing in front of it) cylinder, not sure what number it is, sorry.. anyhooo, I was wondering can I stick a multimeter onto the coilpack connector to check that there is a current going to it? also can I check the connectors on the ptu to make sure they are sending out a current properly too? if where should I be plugging the little prongs from my multimeter? (not exactly a skilled electrician sorry) also is there any way I can check to see if the coil pack is at fault without buying a new one just to see? hope this makes sense! any zed heads who fancy a chat please feel free to call me on 07967 477083 and enlighten me!!! cheers chaps

took my ptu apart today following the instructions from that site, couldn't see any dodgy connections though so I'm guessing it was probably just the plug that was a bit ropey (although they both seemed pretty clean and tight fitting...) got a new ptu on the way so I guess I will find out when that one is fitted!

Help Help Help
Appologies in advance if this is teaching you to suck eggs....... :nelson: been doing lots of reading about the ptu mate (mine seems to be fooked) sounds like it could well be that, apparently they can work fine when cold but when they warm up a bit or are shaken around for a while after the engine has been running the connections will go cack, then let it cool down and it all settles back to normal again, its the only thing that makes any sense to me for an intermittent problem. Extract from http://www.aus300zxclub.com/tech/moveptu/movingptu.htm What are the Problems? The failure of the PTU is reported increasingly among Australian Z32 owners. Problems with the PTU are not often reported in US cars, because Nissan USA acknowledged early on that there was a problem with the original (Mitsubishi) PTU and did a recall, replacing them with an uprated (Hitachi) unit. Any subsequent failures, if they have occurred, are not such an issue because the unit is much cheaper in the States. Collecting the experiences of various Australian owners the following points emerge: Failures can be intermittent - causing loss of ignition to one or more cylinders - or Failure can be complete and sudden, causing instant stalling - very dangerous in heavy traffic The component fails at 100,000-130,000 kms. Nissan did not apply its recall to Australian cars. The replacement cost is approx. $1100 ex Nissan Aus. The replacement which Nissan supplies is the Mitsubishi unit, NOT the upgraded, more reliable unit. The replacement will fail again, often sooner than the original. Examination of the PTU reveals delamination of welded terminal contacts. Failure appears to be a combination of the effects of heat and vibration. Vibration (being attached to the engine!) causes a break in one of the connections, and as they warm up they expand, pulling the wires apart. This explains why a car will suffer failure when hot, but will restart again once cooled down, only to fail again 5 minutes later.

PMSL nice, i like your style, will cruise around looking for a nice pad and just move my shit in!! screaming squatters rights at everybody!

The Law
Balls if thats the case perhaps I shouldnt have pleaded guilty and picked up my MS90 :( nuts.... true about the charging bit, been there done that a few times!! :nono: maybe it's the informal shetland thing.. seems to be a magic land stuck in a bit of a time warp where the kids are free to roam the streets without fear of being abducted and people leave thier doors unlocked!! :D are houses expensive there???
-
hesitation has progressed to stalling and not starting again!!
well i need to change the pcv's as the hoses dont look too clever on them , plus I may as well pre-empt the failure of my coilpack/injector connectors and replace them all along with a s2 PTU + harness, makes sense to do it all at the same time with the plenum off for extra room to work in... few hundred squids of parts there... :( just hope I can get em before the weekend....

It's the registered keepers responsibility to know who is driving the car at any given time so if you dont know who was driving its still your fault :(
-
The Law
if its the norm up there to leave the keys in the car (sounds like a nice place!!!) then the police must be aware of it, I still think you are looking at (checks license) an MS90 "Failure to give information as to identity of driver" was actually only a £145 fine I got. get that solictor pronto though! and good luck! (dont let the buggers grind you down!) :)
