If you drive it the same it wouldn't generally make much difference. Mine has been chipped fro years with one variant of another and it tends to do about 22mpg or 280-330 per tank.

I did a Sky+ for somebody. Dead easy, just wack the drive in and it takes care of everything itself. Much easier than a TiVo. It is worth getting the heavy duty type drive, ie ones that are intended to be run 24x7. They will last longer.
