I have a warning light come on and I don't know what it is. I have lost power and the engine is hunting at idle. The light sits next to the handbrake light, and looks like a diagram of a piece of an exhaust with steam coming from it. Can anyone send me a scan of the warning lights page from a 1993 TT.

Typically caused by bad connections to the coilpacks. No spark means unburnt fuel is blown down the exhaust which catches light in the catalyst making it overheat.

Thanks guys. a bit more info. I started smelling fuel a few days ago which appeared when the engine was cold. this morning I raised the bonnet, and switched on the engine and was literally hit in the face by a jet of fuel coming from a pipe. This must have been happening for a couple of days. Also yesterday just before this pwer loss started I smelled what i can only describe as amonia in the car for a few minutes. i have smelled the rotten eggs of a blown cat before, but this was different. it was shortly after this that the cat overheat light came on. so i have fuel being sprayed over the engine, and this cat overheat light. having fixed the fuel leak, the power loss is still there. do you think i have damaged the cat??

No the cat will be fine and even if it was it wouldn't cause a power loss.

No spark on one cylinder I expect.

Mine did this last weekend, coilpack lead had jumped of. But not actually of the top of the connector, just risen 1cm or so....

Looked totally normal until a friend of mine lent into the engine back and caught it with his sleeve and it dropped back on... problem fixed.

Mine also displayed this "cat overheat" light.

But mine ran happily as a V5 ;)

this has really helped me locate my problem i had light on and was told i needed plugs so im going to change plugs and reseat all coil pack and check all connections ..

im so happy i read this i want to fix it now but its bas***d freezing and dark ..

I get the light on and off all the time, but I don't have any cats. I must get under there and earth the thing out properly :)

this has really helped me locate my problem i had light on and was told i needed plugs so im going to change plugs and reseat all coil pack and check all connections ..

im so happy i read this i want to fix it now but its bas***d freezing and dark ..

Rob, just a few pointers to, hopefully, save you some time!

 

When checking the Coil-Packs, check that all of the rubber insulation is complete and intact, as a hole in this will caurse it to earth out and loose your spark. This happened to one of mine, so a new coil-pack was required.

 

On the PTU if you have a series 1 version, then an upgrade to a series 2 wouldn't hurt and would improve reliability (as the earlier one was prone to overheating and thus having dry joints inside, and you can't fix them easily)

 

On the connector front, look out for 'Green gundge' on any of your coil-pack & PTU connections, this can sometimes be cleaned up with electrical contact cleaner, but I personally never found this to be very effective, so I changed all of my connectors, and you get new plugs with a new series 2 PTU anyway, although these do come with a length of loom to connect to your existing series 1 loom, but I cut and chopped mine out (Old plugs, not the PTU!)

EDIT* Also check the security of the Coil-pack connectors, as the clips become brittle and snap very easily!

cheers dave will do basically i have now resided to the fact i need to give the car a full new set of plugs and fully check all sensors and there respective connectors ..Also alot of the pipes on this car seem old and i think need replaced .. they are all very hard and have lost there elasticity which i believe could cause poor air tight connections..

also going to remove k&n filter wash it and dry properly and check air flow sensor for any gack on it ..Ive also decided to remove cats and intsall some boost jets when my new ecu arrives ..

just a quick question if i removed all plugs then put in new plugs but just sat them on block to check spark do you think this would help me identify if i had a stray spark as probably i would see which plug or plugs were to blame ?

these engines are a nightmare for dodgy sensors surly somebody could just bring out a bypass for all the unnessasary gack wernt engines so much better with out electronics..

a good old file and some wet and dry used to work great..
