Portugal Z clubs
Despite my efforts seem unable to locate any forums or clubs for zeds in Portugal, I know there must be some as each time I go I see zeds there, as I am off there next week would be good to see if I can meet up with some guys. Does anyone know or have any links. Thanks in advance Jeff TT

Nissan V Blueprint ... Cambelt showdown
Interesting how do you work that out then matey? certainly the marks need aligning with the cam pullys and lower sprocket mark but cannot see how they can be for reference only as there is no facility to change that once fitted, however could see that been relevant as a start point when using adjustable cam pulleys but not standard gear. The teeth count and belt length between and the camshaft and the lower crank sprocket determines the engine timing both camshaft wise and ignition timing wise so the alignment marks on the belt need to be acurate as they are crucial to the correct fitting, Again the teeth gap, shape, and belt length is also a major factor, if say the timing marks are set at the correct teeth count gap but the belt length is still wrong due to inprecise manufacture then the valve / crank timing will be effected. Anyway thanks for you input always good to have a bit of banter, again for agumant sake will check it out your way and post the pics later. Jeff TT :D

Nissan V Blueprint ... Cambelt showdown
Using genuine Nissan parts is simple they are the best and often only cost a small amount more than non genuine parts. However I can see why it can seem a cost saving to use spurious brands as in most cases they look exactly the same and without any back to back details its hard to make an informed decision one such area is cambelts. So with this in mind a non genuine belt was purchased and compared with a genuine Nissan belt the following photos shows the order of things as and as the finally show there is a big, big difference and I think some of you guys are going to be surprised. Picture one the start on the left we have a BLUEPRINT belt and on the right a Nissan belt. We start by lining up the first set of timing marks, the Nissan belt is on the bottom Moving along to the next timing marks holding the belts in place the next two timing mark are already not the same on the non Nissan belt, they two mark are showing shortness of timing Moving along to the next timing mark holding the belts in place the marks line up Moving along to the next timing mark holding the belts in place the mark fails to line up again and show shortness of timing. Moving along to the next timing mark holding the belts in place the marks line up Moving along to the next timing mark holding the belts in place the mark fails to line up again but this time show extension of timing Here we have the two belts side by side with the Nissan belt on the left, the materials are very different, the non Nissan belt is less firm Here we have the two belts side by side with the Nissan belt on the bottom, look to the belt edge and you can clearly see a red reinforcement line in the genuine belt and non in the non genuine belt. Also look carefully at the actual teeth shape in the valleys and peaks the non Nissan belt is very different, in fact when wrapped around a cam sprocket the fit is compromised. As we can clearly see the two belts are not the same, the non genuine belt has compromises that will give poor cam timing, poor ignition timing, poor cam sprocket location, and more worringly the 60k change interval cannot be considered applicable as it can to a Nissan one as the belt strength does not match the Nissan one in material quality or fit. Another concern is how many zeds are running on these belts with compromised valve and ignition timing as even if they are set reasonably well when first fitted they are going to stretch quickly and even more compromise creeps in, this I firmly believe is the route cause to why some zeds seem to not perform as well as an identical one. Hope that clears up the if, buts and maybe`s on cambelts at least. Jeff TT

JAE news
Ok guys your both booked, Bird your RPS clutch issue is not unusual, the harder clutch cover needs increased fluid pressure to depress it, the amount of pedal travel on a standard set up is insufficient and so most of your clutch action is used up building pressure rather than moving the lever. A work around is to undo the switches on the pedal box and back them off to the absolute minimum, the pedal rod can now be extended and hey presto an extra inch of pedal movement. This is a work around rather than a fix and the clutch pedal will be a little higher than the brake pedal but its liveable. Maybe later a different slave cylinder with a shorter movement but a longer body should give you back the ratio required between the master and slave cylinder. Jeff :)

JAE news
Hi all, just to let you know the Zedworld team will be at JAE Wickstead Park this coming Saturday, hopefully be a good chance to put faces to names etc. and as per usual will have our trusty laptop for free ConZult checks anyone interested in that if you let me know here or by pm will give as many peeps a chance then, could be of interest as its a perfect chance to collate plenty of data on typical set up issues within the club. We will be distributing goody bags of which will give more details later but each one will be numbered and a raffle of sorts will be performed with 3 main workshop prize vouchers of £100, £50, and £25, and depending on the take up a few consolation ones. Remember this is FREE so make sure you get a goody bag !!! Ok guys lets make this a massive meet for the 300zx.co.uk club and lets all have a good time doing it, Winter is coming soon so take advantage of this event and support the club. Jeff

Timing belt inspection
Shucks you making me blush:D As the rubber detoriates with time as well as mileage my thoughts are every 5years as a minimum if its a Nissan belt and much less for a non Nissan belt even if it looks in ok condition when removed, just not worth the risk. Often when I show the old belt to customers if it does not look like a bootlace they seem dissapointed, but I explain that when it is in ok condition its the exactly the right time to change it and not wait till it looks too bad. Hope that helps Jeff TT

Possible detonantion a bit technical
Hi matey, check out the thread below I posted it sometime back it explains how recircs can be the very cause of your problem so assuming you still have them in place and not dump valves of course, but would put money on it that the cause is them, answers why sometimes the power comes back when they shut correctly. Illuminated door lock barrels?
Just US spec as far as I know, however all of the handles have the facility to retrofit it, only thing with most cars having alarm controlled central locking is its a bit unrequired but cool never the less. :D Jeff TT

Timing belt inspection
Cambelt inspection is a topic we come across often, but unfortunately access is limited to at best a top view by removing the right hand cover. Trouble is the belt is under tension and of course the underside of the belt is almost non viewable. Take a look at the two photo`s bearing in mind the belt is removed and so is not under tension so would actually look better if still fitted added to the restricted view when in place. The first picture showns both the top section and the underneath at the same time, this a luxury you do not have when its in place of course, either way its fair to say most viewers would concider leaving it well alone as in good order and replace the cover happy its been checked. However now take a look at the second photo, this was taken at the same time but higher zoom. Now more detail can be seen with crazing of the upper part of the belt but more important is the underneath section which now shows delamination of the belts outer materials between the teeth. This belt is pobably not about to snap, but is well into the stages of failing, never take for granted the view of the belt when installed on the engine as its condition and estimated life left, if in doubt change it and use a genuine Nissan one too, a follow up post tomorrow will explain why. Alternator failing causes
Alternators often get a bad rep on Z buying guides without real reason really, yes they do fail on occassion but in the main its due to outside forces one of which is deep puddles and no undertrays! Take a look at the photo below this is the main cables that connects the loom to the alternator output, corrosion of the ring section can cause such a bad connection that a build up of heat leads to weekening of the cable cores and eventual damage to the output regulator. This is not the cause of every failure but one that seems to be on the increase. Unfortunatly due to the location of the alternator prevention of this is limited as the alternator needs removing to check this, undertrays do have a purpose and missing ones do seem to be on an increase....maybe a coincidence maybe not. Illuminated door lock barrels?
Yes the US spec cars had illuminated barrels if you take a look there is also a tab for a micro switch the idea is to help you find the key hole when in total darkness, a small lift on the handle triggers the switch and on come the barrel light, would be reletively easy to retro-fit. Jeff TT

Detective Jeff of Zedworld PD Triumphs Again!
Ok I can answer it, we pass work on to Phil when we are too busy, we do not do this lightly either. Phil and myself have spoken many, many times and he always fills me with confidence, he knows what he is best at and sticks to it, final tuning and engine setting up he tends to pass back to us, but big long term jobs he is good at such shell swaps also good at finishing off unfinished projects etc. Jeff TT

How can a speed sensor be tested ?
?? reed relay?? No don`t think so, its a simple AC voltage generator and outputs between 1 and 5 volts ac, this by its nature (alternating current ) switches on/ of at a set frequency, this is what the speedo system reads and converts to a linear signal for the needle and other items ( p/s, cruise, autobox etc.) Jeff TT

Project Accident Repair
A momentary loss of concentration and wham! take a look at the photo's below and you have to feel for the owner, don't know the full details yet but can see this zed has had some serious money spent previously and now the ins. co. are playing Silly Billy's sadly the damage is extensive, the corner has been pushed back and down, the inner wing is creased all the way to the bulkhead, unfortunately previous repairs to the chassis leg are evident in photo 6, photo 1 shows an alarming difference in the steering track! IF ( ? ) this becomes a rebuild project will document it and the post it up if enough interest. Jeff TT

climate control reading
Sounds like a problem with the back up power supply which is the same as the radio back up supply, designed for just this reason to keep the memory going when the ignition is switched off, check the fuses in the drivers footwell in particular the bottom look for a brown 7.5amp one. Hope that helps Jeff TT

ABS Warning light, how to fix it ???
Given your battery issues take a look at these couple of suggestions ( links below) seems voltage spikes / overcharging etc. can be a potential cause of your problems. Can any make 6X9 speekers fit in the rear of a 1990 zx
Hi Damo, don`t bother trying been there some years ago and its a ball ache and the results did not impress, now if you fit 6 x 9`s in the front doors ( easier than its sounds )and a sub in the back you will have a nice balanced sound which can kick ass without spending big bucks. Jeff TT

international eBay...
Had this happen to me a month ago, the buyer was in the UK however but all the same it annoyed me as the item was over £200, I took the risk and it all worked out ok and the money was released the moment he posted good feedback. I did raise a complaint though based on the fact that as the seller I was put in real danger of loosing my money and the sold item, in normal paypal / ebay style I got an automatic e-mail saying as I had low sales on ebay it was normal practise RUBBISH been active member for 4 years with 100 % feedback and hundreds of sales. I think you could pull out by saying the item has become lost / damaged before shipping. Good luck whatever Jeff TT
