Have you checked the "engine cont" fuse,all kinds of bizarre charging and warning light faults occur when it blows.its in the engine bay under the black plastic cover.

Unless you need the box out leave it in,there is no need to remove it to get the engine out,you will still need however to lower the front crossmember.

Funny you mentioned the paint issue,I know a guy with an R35 and hes taking Nissan to court,its black and peppered with stone chips.He had the paint measured and he said its the thinest coating permissable,his words not mine,anyhows Nissan blew out complaint about getting it repainted under warranty so hes taking legal action !!

The ecu knows when the cars in neutral via the switch,no switch no hicas diagnostics im afraid unless you find a way to ground pin 44 intermittently to enter hicas hicas diagnostic mode.
