  1. Quite right ;) http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=22904&highlight=shock+absorber http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=19332&page=2&pp=15&highlight=shock+absorber Despite this coming up regularly, there is still no wiring diag which shows the UK shock absorber unit connected to anything other than the handbrake and brake warning light and earth and ignition and the two rear shocks
  2. That's exactly how they do it - income from policies less claims less admin = profit. If there were fewer claims, premiums would be lower. Conversely, premiums go up because a) more people claim and b) repair costs are higher.
  3. His fame has spread as far south as Slough
  4. Star Wars 4,5,6 and 1,2,3 are nothing more than top class space opera. Which is terrific if you like that sort of thing (and I do). I saw it (with my other half) in Guildford with the aid of a Brett's Burger and a spliff... or several. Mac - just sit down with a beer, unhitch your critical faculties and watch - treat Star Wars as a Saturday morning matinee. Enjoy!
  5. *ahem* Yes it's monovalent quite right. Which is indeed covalent. As opposed to ionic. If those bonds were ionic in character, the H2SO4 produced by the reaction of the H2S (one of the whiffier bits in the gases expelled) and the H20 in your bath would dissolve them. As any fule kno Pay attention at the back there or its 30mins detention chiz chiz. Gio "the man with a Chemistry O-level" :duffer:
  6. and while we're on chemistry, did you know that if it wasn't for the covalent nature of carbon-carbon and carbon-hydrogen bonds, we'd dissolve every time we farted in the bath?
  7. Yes that's right - all petrol "goes off". Its a very complex blend of chemicals. Two major changes over the years 1) the removal of tetra-ethyl lead (thank God) and a new BS which allowed more volatile octane enhancers. To get the octane level right you either add a large amount of a not-very-volatile additive or a small amount of a very volatile one. This latter is cheaper so guess what they do? Because it's more volatile, it evaporates more quickly and hence the remaining petrol's octane level goes down. Oh and bike carburettors freeze up = "carb icing".
  8. does this work?
  9. There are zillions of sites (like the one posted by billynomates ) which give this info already. Put a link in the FAQ or link list by all means (but no one will bother to look anyway eg insurance eg smoke eg ad infinitum) but there is no point to having a special section as it will always be more inaccurate than the sites that already do it.

If people ask the smoke question a lot, does this make it a FAQ? http://www.300zx.co.uk/tech/SmokeDiag.htm And where do you find a FAQ list? http://www.300zx.co.uk/tech/ and http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=43 and http://www.300zx.org.uk/
  11. yep. It's a real 98 octane - this is a measurable and legal claim unlike snakeoil pots which claim to do the impossible (Colt may have been told "95ron in and 99ron out" but this is not repeat not possible and is therefore almost certainly a complete lie). I've got a Chemistry O-level, trust me
  12. Hi Richard - what's the filesize?
  13. Thanks guys - yes you are all correct! Just for info, yes I had the PCV valves done about 2 years ago, and yes, it has done it at other MOTs but that bloke wasn't as excessive, and yes they shouldn't leave it on tickover for 20 minutes! The garage suggested some guppo from Wynns which was supposed to stop smoke but Mr F said don't put anything like that near a Zed engine. A better suggestion was for some Miller's oil. But the actual cure was to find a friendlier MOT station so let's hear it for Pameer Autos of Southall  and the estimable Mr M Ismail of Atlas MOT Services, Abbey Business Centre, Oxgate Lane
  14. Just had an MOT failure on smoke from the exhausts. But it's done that at all the other MOTs I've seen. I checked http://www.motuk.co.uk and it says reason for failure is "emits dense blue or clearly visible black smoke..." so it's down to a definition of "dense". Which I don't think it is. The smoke is almost deffo down to old turbos (standard, over 110k miles). Two questions. 1) Is there a quick fix that can be done before Monday? 2) Anyone know a Z-aware (i.e. knows they might smoke a bit) MOT centre near Staples Corner or Heathrow/Hayes? Cheers - Gio
  15. Best help you'll get is to look at the buyers' guides! http://www.300zx.org.uk/tech_20.htm Oh, and use the Links above - and Search!

Blimey, there's life in Bracknell! It's the Royal Oak on the Farnham Road as you go north it's on the left.
  17. Bloodrunners? Bloody 'ell, I lent him the bikes for the video when he was trying to turn it into a movie. At least 2 ZXR750s got a serious make-up job. Great day at the TRL in Crowthorne for the filming. (AndyP, I'm getting very worried about this. Larry Miller, Zeds and now Bloodrunner - what next? Pleeeease don't tell me you knew a blonde called Ros from Barry....)

  19. No Nyet Nein Non Não 否 부정 不 Why would anyone buy a Zed if they didn't want one
  20. The viscous-coupling fan takes power from the engine to turn round. The electric fan takes power from the battery which got it from the alternator which got it from the engine. So they take the same power but the electric one goes through more conversion stages (rotational > generator > electrical > battery > chemical > sulphuric acid / lead > Battery > electrical > motor > rotational) which loses % energy at every step. Tanstaafl!
  21. Yes - the standard ride height! And even then, as the car gets older and the everything sags, the suspension succumbs to gravity and even the standard setup needs camber correction (or, preferably, new springs) to put everything back where it should be. All this because there is no adjustment for camber built in to the front OEM suspension.
  22. oops beaten by Legrath - tooslow, too slow... or these http://www.stillen.com/Sportscars_detail.asp?cat=5&subcat=181&Brand=&id=37526&page=1
