Advice needed: what to do with the strip above rear lights?
hmm - can't remember from when mine was done. IIRC, the metal below is is already painted body colour. Prob because it's easier to paint the whole thing and then bung a black sticker on it. With a spot of luck and a bit of solvent you should be able to get away with it. Good luck :D

Change of postcode
They have added a new postcode sector to the NN11 postcode district. Which means? Oh all right, I'll tell you. The first part of the Postcode (i.e. NN11 - the bit before the space) is called the outward code: it identifies the town or district to which the letter is to be sent for further sorting. So if I send you a letter to NN11 0xx, it goes into the letter box and ends up in my local mail sorting office (i.e. Slough). There, they sort all the letters for any postcode NN11 xxx into one bag marked NN11. That's so my sorting office know to send it to the sorting office that deals with NN11 When it gets there, the NN11 sorting office sorts it again into the local sectors which are the bit after the space: your old one was 5xx and your new one is 0xx. (BTW sector 0 is the 10th sector, not the first: 1 is the first) Let's say a postcode is NN11 0AX NN is the postal area. There are 124 postcode areas in the UK 11 is the district. Approx 20 Postcode districts in an area. The above is the outware code. The inward code is 0 is the sector. Approx 3,000 addresses in a sector AX is the Unit. Usually 15 domestic addresses per Unit. The inward code is usually a thoroughfare, part of a thoroughfare or (eg for businesses who get a lot of mail) an individual address. Postcodes were invented like this to match the actual route walked by Postman Pat and his merry colleagues. Better, in that respect, than the US Zipcode whicj is just numbers with no geographical relationship to the real world. They are intensely irritating as they require you to use the shift key several time while typing - especially on a steamdriven typoewriter. And IIRC they were introduced by that left wing looney Viscount Stansgate- sorry, Anthony Wedgewood-Benn, sorry Tony Benn when he was Minister for Posts and Telecommunications. I think he also ditched the alpha exchanges (eg my first phone number was Abbey 3139) for number only. But then he did (as Minister for Technology) oversee the development of Concorde so we have a lot to thank the pipe-smoking tea-drinking commie for. :D

Happy Birthday Mr Groves
gits - sorry to hear that Mike. When you find them, just chuck 'em off the pier. If it's any use, I just replaced my Sony head unit because the internal amp cuts out from time to time (feels like dry joint or something thermal) so if you know anyone who could repair it, it's yours.

Credit where credit's due: Dan Perkins and ZTech
Thanks guys - OTOH, the garage that screwed up can expect the kind attentions of Trading Standards and, if necessary, Small Claims Court. Bagins / ZTech thanks for the shoulder to cry on and the words of advice. I look forward to being able to book my car in for the ZTech treatment. Dan Perkins Nissan in Slough (who I have used since Aug 99 when it was Rebuck) get tonight's brownie point award for a) booking my Z in on the day the other garage f***ed up; b) fixing it within 24 hours; c) providing a loan car with 3 hours notice. I know there are Nissan Main Dealers out there who are, shall we say, not necessarily expert and helpful. But I am happy to pass on my good experience with these guys. The service manager even goes to Billing (sadly in a Honda but you can't have everything!) Cheers All - Gio PS - if you are tempted to book your pride and joy into Lucas Garage in Datchet, think carefully. I have recommended this place before and now regret it big time. Recommendation hereby withdrawn.

Win XP SP2, Perl and 401.3 Unauthorized
If there is anyone out there who is running WinXP SP2 with Perl and who has had the 401.3 Unauthorized Due to ACL on Resource error when trying to run a cgi script, I would be very glad of a helping hand. Putting SP2 onto my XP2 Pro machine has broken a previously working IIS/Perl combination. Large :duffer: :duffer: to successful guru! 07767 248688 TIA - Gio (and why do these things always happen just before you go on holiday  )

Z32 300ZX - has it had it's day ?
OK Nelson, right in overview but just one or two nitpicky bits. It did get a lot of good reports (see the Z Enthusiasts Companion for a contemporary view) and credit in the UK. At the time, it was the most expensive Japanese car on sale in the UK which probably took the shine off a tad but showed a lot of people had a lot of faith in it. It was discontinued because of the cost of getting it through UK emission regs (I think I read that somewhere :D ) But, and here is Uncle Gio's favourite hobby-horse, it doesn't have a successor. There is no "ZX" in the range. There is a 350Z but that is the successor to the 280Z not the 280ZX or 300ZX or 300ZX. Zs and ZXs are clearly very closely related (hooray) but they are different cars with different design concepts for different markets. At a slight tangent, what is today's equivalent of the 300ZX Z32? State-of-the-art technology, 2+2 grand tourer "personal luxury". Remember, at today's money, a new Z32 should cost about £50k. Maybe the new Maserati? Other that that, I agree with Nelson 100% :duffer:

Advice needed, someone's sold me a knackered car!!!
"Fit for purpose" only applies to Consumer Protection Act i.e. not private sale. Was the ad marked "T"? If so, was a trader and this will apply. If not, was the seller really a trader and just hiding it (which is not allowed). Did you sign anything to say "sold as seen"? There are really too many unknowns to hand out good advice on the case itself (and it's not allowed to hand out legal advice if you are not legally qualified which I am certainly not. So I won't.) But there has been some good advice handed out on good things to do: 1) Check with Trading Standards. It's free and it's official. Find your local office at http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/ 2) Check with your motoring organisation (RAC, AA, whatever - and if you aren't a member, consider joining: getting advice is one of the reasons why they exist.) And to add 3) What is the code of practise of the publication in which you saw the ad? Was it an AutoTrader type publication and do they have an advice contact?

Selling parts and not getting your money
Aaand I am old enough to remember a period where several forum guys were defrauded via Nochex so nothing is perfect. Mac, I approve of listing forum screen names who either don't pay up or don't ship. If it is not already in Ts and Cs of the forum, I would have no objection for auto suspension if there is a reported problem and auto banning if there is a repeated proven problem. But - unless the forum is very well-behaved - I can see this degenerating into a yah-boo-sucks yes-he-did-no-he-didn't scenario which would need strong moderation by (eg) Trader Liaison. The best advice is that no-one should send anything unless payment has been received and cleared. And don't pay anyone unless you trust them to send you the goods. Pay by credit card (not debit card or charge card) as the credit card company is jointly liable under the Consumer Credit Act. "Normal" payments like cheques, credit cards et al have some measure of legal protection - internet payment methods are much more difficult and have much less protection. You must decide if the added convenience outweighs the trust you must give to organisations who are handling your payments...

Some interesting information.
And since Ford are trying to sell Cosworth, I'd get paid upfront before doing anything for them!

Centre Propshaft bearing...AGAIN
Those part numbers aren't right. The bit after the dash (eg Z32TT and Z32NA) aren't what Nissan use. Did you get these from Courtesy by any chance? Suggestions: 1) look it up here http://www.300zx.lv/catalog/?gr=F&sec=370 2) Call or email a fellow forum member and forum supporter http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=38 3) Call or email http://www.czp.us/

Quite right, mate. You may have noticed that 300ZX indicators work unlike those fitted to BMWs :D If you're in Essex, you'll be well sorted for meets and fellow Z owners.

Z350!!! What a load a Rubbish
In which case, the best and best-value upgrade you can do is to do a skid-pan course and/or high-speed training and/or track day. The 350Z is one of the best and most balanced cars around - if you don't feel confident in it, or if you can corner a VTS more quickly than a 350Z, the limiting factor is driver not car. And besides that, increasing driver skill is the one upgrade that is easy to transfer from car to car!
-
Z350!!! What a load a Rubbish
Good list, Steve-o. The 350Z is streets ahead of anything in there under £30k. And (since the 300ZX is a £50k car in modern money) it's not too shabby against the NSX or 911. And either 350Z or 300ZX beats the pants off an M3 coupe. I suffered many miles in my ex-mate's one. Hard spine rattling ride, uncomfy seats and harsh noisy engine. Awful car. So time for Z and ZX owners to enter :D

Advice on a vehicle for sale...
Tribal shamans take peyote (and other 'shrooms) and then the tribe drink the shaman's piss as passing the psychoactives through the kidneys concentrates the active ingredient. Probably wouldn't work with lager, though.

Z350!!! What a load a Rubbish
Nope - you can't possibly slate the car of choice of Oliver Reed :mac1:  And, strangely, there's just been a review of the 350Z on Men and Motors (they loved it) contrasting it with the Jag XK thingy. They both have the same power to weight ratio (as the Jag is a lardy old man's car) and the Jag is £50k so is really competition for the 300ZX.
-
Z350!!! What a load a Rubbish
Don't we all? No, the 1/5 mile thingy was a white one on Top Gear - mine's a silver one and we did an all-model (except the 280Z) 1/4 mile shoot-out a couple of weeks back for a JC DVD coming out before Xmas. So that's 2 - 0 to the lardy old girl vs the new kid on the block! But I still don't think Z vs ZX is comparing like with like. When launched in the UK, the 300ZX Z32 was the most expensive Japanese car on the market at £34,500 - in 1990! Which, according to the rpi, makes it a £49,500 motor at today's prices. The ZX range was designed for a different market to the Z series. The ZX was up against cars like the Porsche 928S - definitely in the luxury supercar market and intended to prove the Japanese cold make as good a supercar as European and US marques. The 350Z is a return to the earlier Z series concept of 2 seater sports. Your competition is the Porsche Boxster and Audi TT (both of which are comprehensively blown into the weeds by the Z) and it's in the "affordable" sector rather than the £50k market. The 350Z is a great car - but it isn't, and was never intended to be - a 350ZX.
-
Z350!!! What a load a Rubbish
The 350Z is far from a load of rubbish (best value "modern" sports, perhaps - what else is better costing £25k list?) but it is not a ZX. There's a surprise :D It's not supposed to be. If it was, it would be called a ZX. The Z and ZX styles are intended to be and are designed as two different types of cars. Please don't judge a Z by ZX criteria and please don't waste your time/money/effort in trying to turn a Z into a ZX or vice versa. Enjoy them for what they are, rather than what you would like them to be.
