look where i work LOL
Blimey, I must be old - back in the '80s we were saying "it's not as good as it used to be, the glory days have gone now...." Now then, let's see - I got in just after the Z1300 ("like riding a block of flats"), launched the GPX600 (IIRC), ZX-10, ZXR-750, ZZR-1100, fell off a lot of jetskis, had a major row with dickhead arseholes and buggered off to Alan Sugar. Hey ho, happy days :D

I know exactly how good it is :D ;) The biggest ever expense bill I had was taking a bunch of journos out to a very pissed dinner at the IoM hahahaha :hurl:

Hypothetical question....
Ta. Makes sense yet again! Oh and while I'm here, another post has reminded me of a mod which IMNVHO makes a lot of sense: traction control. Properly installed and set up, this can be a great safety aid.

Hypothetical question....
IMHO he's doing a proper job. That's streets away from the "shopping list approach" of just bunging on what "everyone says" onto an old nail and hoping to get 1000hp! :D

Hypothetical question....
That makes sense... Isn't there some other question about having to oil / clean / not clean certain types of filter?

Hypothetical question....
Well I am getting on a bit these days cough mnk. Not having experienced either, I am no expert but yes I would have thought a decent induction kit wouldn't let in water. However, if you search through here you will find a lot of owners who have fitted a kit from a reputable brand and found that, yep, it lets in water. Chips: if you ask 5 Zed owners, you'll get 6 answers! The difficulty is separating the bull from those who've swallowed the bull from those who really know what they're on about. :D

Hypothetical question....
It has a lot of potential but only if you really really know what you're doing (eg MAC1, Z-Tech etc). If you have just bought a Zed, £1,000 or £2,000 will be far better spent in fixing what needs fixing than bolting more (and mostly badly thought out) mods onto a tired motor. EG: cambelt, engine wiring loom (connectors at the very least), suspension bushes, maybe springs, full 4-wheel tracking, throttle body clean, PCVs, etc etc. Then if you've still got some dosh left over, go on a track day and a high-speed driving course and you and your Zed will be significantly faster and safer and more reliable and more fun to drive every day. And since you can't wave a stick round here without finding reasons why mods are good, here is a completely biased Luddite view: stainless exhaust = good. Longer lasting and cheaper than the OEM rust bucket. decat = kills off your turbos more quickly through not enough back pressure on the worn seals. Even if your turbos were perfect, decat increases wear and decreases life. boost controller = potential trouble. Increasing boost increases load on worn system all round and makes other failures more likely. induction kit = filter problems or added filter maintenance or lets water in to screw up your MAF = expensive chip = which one? Who can tell the difference between a good chip mapped safely for UK fuel and one based on US or JDM? The road to detonation (especially when combined with boost controller) and expensive bangs. And another thing, you get increased insurance costs & some insurance companies are not mod-friendly. And another thing, even if you do get 15 or 30 rwhp extra, to what end? When and where will you actually notice the difference? Cheers Gio the Luddite TVOS

Junk your aircon!
Mac, I think I've untangled what I thought I meant. You said your car ran 6 deg cooler after ditching the aircon. WillieO said that couldn't happen because the thermostat would wait until the temp got up to the old temp. You said what would happen if the airflow would get restricted and, of course we agree the temp would go sky high. So I think the point is that the thermostat governs the min running temp of the engine (with or without aircon) so we don't understand why your car would suddenly run 6 deg cooler without changing the thermostat. OTOH, restricting the airflow (by aircon or cardboard), the max running temp of the engine would be higher. I think. :D memo don't get into engineering arguments when pissed :duffer:

Junk your aircon!
Macca stop taking the p*ss. The thermostat controls the temp at which water starts to flow round the circuit. So it's always at whatever WilleO said no matter what you do to your rad / aircon. But if you reduce airflow like you said, than engine would heat up quicker and then, once the heat produced by the engine can't be taken away (cos you reduced the airflow) blow up quicker. Mac, you know that throwing money at the best Zed parts and Zed engineers can improve certain aspects of the Zed. But the people who have the knowledge and experience (and money!) to do this successfully are few and far between.

Hypothetical question....
The correct answer to your question is "no". :D It is not possible to predict a ball park power increase when tuning a TT ZX. Where are you starting from? A standard unmodded or a Zed with a few well-done mods or a one which has been through the hands of modding f*ckwits? Given that you already have a car which cost over £38,000 a decade ago and which has 280 (or 300) stated fwhp, why does anyone believe spending a few quid on Max Power w*nk will do anything other than f*ck it up?

hesitation problem cause found
I heard (but I am not technical so get it confirmed by proper advice) that if you drop the gearbox and do other stuff, you can tilt the engine just forward enough to get at the EGR and replace / gaskets etc. I was told this under a veil of secrecy by the git who ripped me off when he (or his grease monkeys) replaced my knock sensor. Not being technical I have no idea if this answers your question but I hope it helps. If he wanted me to maintain the secrecy, then you shouldn't have been such a lying git Mr Sherwin.

UK vs JAP...(Again!!)
errr which forum members do you mean? That's not a view I hold. It's true to say that a UK car is probably easier to insure than a JDM but if you're alive from the neck up and get three quotes for your insurance each year (like you should) that won't be a problem especially if you check the insurance FAQ here. It's also probably true to say that incompetent parts suppliers and garages might claim that JDM Zeds are a problem but again, forum membership should cure that inaccuracy. And yes, Virginia, there are some Nissan Dealers who are first class with Zeds (like Dan Perkins in Slough). Would I prefer a UK Zed to my JDM? errrr possibly if I could find one as good at the same price? Do I regret buying a JDM? No. Do I think I got a better value by buying a JDM instead of a UK? Certainly at the time, the JDM prices were way below UK equivalent. So I'm happy. The difference between a good UK and JDM is far less than the difference between a good clean car and one modded by a Max Power-style grunt.

choose between mrs or 300
Doing the "car or me" thing (or hi-fi or me, or anything else or me) is only a symptom, not the cause. Try to work out why the ultimatum got issued in the first place and the " x or me" will disappear. Good luck with the relationship, earthman :D

Junk your aircon!
Last time my aircon broke (and blew out that 500psi safety plug) I had to drive 6 hours up to bloody Cumbria and 6 overheated bloody hours back again. Open all the windows on the motorway - get deafened by wind blast and poisoned by diesel. Shut the windows and sweat like a pig. Never ever ever again. Love your airconditioning and it will take care of you :D BTW pre-Zed I was anti aircon. Why would anyone want to fit something that reduced the power available? Now I know: the Zed is the perfect anti global-warming tool!
-
Junk your aircon!
OK I must be clinically insane then :D Try sitting there idling and then turn the a/c on. The revs dip slightly and then come back as the ECU throttles up slightly to make up for the load of the compressor. Or try turning it on and off as you're driving along (not clicky-clicky, just on ... off ... on) and there's deffo an effect. wibble BTW, the behaviour of the aircon is one (or many) reasons I fell in love with the Zed and have so much respect for the original designers and where their heads were at. "Let's have some aircon, chief-designer san", they said "our drivers need to be kept cool and comfortable". "But we all know air-con takes power from the engine and every now and again, our drivers want to bury the loud pedal in the firewall. When they do that, they are clearly after full steam ahead. So let's program the ECU to turn the air-con off!" Brilliant - genius - the designer for suggesting it and the company for being so in-tune, they paid for it to happen! BTW the first hot summer in traffic with all that glass and all us air-con fans can go into smug mode :D

Scart sockets on tv
http://www.lektropacks.co.uk/dept.asp?Hash=664&dept_id=112 SCART connects video signals (amongst other things) and video signals interfere with each other so passive connectors mean you have to have only one source powered up. EG say you have two sources to connect to one TV 1) Passive Connector i.e. 2 SCART sockets (your sources) to one SCART plug (to your TV) Source 1 ON, Source 2 OFF = shows S1 OK Source 1 OFF, Source 2 ON = shows S2 OK Source 1 ON, Source 2 ON = interference 2) Switched Connector passes whichever SCART source is switched through eg switch to 1, only passes 1 even if 1 is OFF and 2 is ON switch to 2, only passes 2 even if 1 is ON and 2 is OFF You can have this sort with switch on SCART connector or remote if you are bone idle like me (and, apparently, Apache :D ) 3) Active Switch passes the last SCART source to get powered up So turn 1 ON, it passes 1 and blocks 2 turn 2 on, it blocks 1 and passes 2 even if you don't turn 1 OFF

Waste time, save money, reliable modding!
Now you can put completely unsuitable wheels on your Zed, lower it to within an inch of its life, pimp-job paint-job, paint yer calipers dayglo, and all without spending a bean or inflicting it on the general public  http://www.modifymycar.com/home.html

a couple of questions about switches
From the date and post number over there on your left it looks as if you joined in Dec 2003 and have posted over 90 times. Which, if this were the case, might mean that you have clearly found this forum so interesting and useful and fun for so long that it might be time you thought about becoming a full member, paying the sub and getting access to all the other wonderful stuff. But you say you have only been here a couple of months so maybe the database is bollixed and needs fixing :headvswal or you chose the user name previously used or wtf? Shunter - any ideas?
