It's basically a safety lock - it's supposed to prevent the box from being knocked into gear when the engine is off. To move out of 'Park' whne the engine is off you need to push the little red lever downwards.

Like Gio, as a moderator I don't expect to have to impose my opinion on anyone and whilst I am always tempted to correct grammar and spelling I have limited my edits to only items that are particuarly offensive or are legally risky. The originals are loctite'd on and can be a real bugger to remove. Mine was so tight that it left the aluminium thread behind on the steel shaft. Easy to clean up once it's off of course. Then replaced it with a nice new Navan one from Courtesy.

When you think you have a flat battery it's always worth checking the connections first -both ends. Remove, clean and replace them.
