  1. Overdrive on an auto is the 4th gear ratio available (ie 4 speed auto) and to make it more complicated there is also a lock up clutch which by-passes the torque converter making it feel like yet another gear ratio. So overdrive in set off position leaves you in the same top gear ratio as a manual left in 4th gear. If you want to be pedantic about it a 5th gear on the manual is also overdriven in that the gearbox output speed is higher than the shaft input speed - so overdriven. When crusing at speed in overdrive with the lock up clutch engaged you should be showing about 2750rpm @ 80mph Cruising at speed on light throttle in overdrive should mean the least fuel consumption but for instant response on a country road leaving it off and letting the revs rise can be more enjoyable
  2. Thats why spam blockers dont work init?
  3. John I had brake shudder way back but it was defo down to warped discs caused by partly siezed calipers. I had some play on the top link bushes on one side and even tho 5mm is allowed I preferred to change them all. In fact both sides showed play once the link was free of the upright. Steering feel was so much tighter and zero rattles once the top link bushes were done and I hope it cures the scubing on the outer edges of the 235 X 18 front tyres. So now the front end is sound but I still have a slight high speed wheel balance issue that niggles me - maybe BBS wheels aint round! Or I've a wheel bearing starting to go off but I cant feel it when its jcked up.
  4. Cant I do a bounce test for the shocks? You can. But also you have a UK car with 2 stage rear shocks. The diagnostic to turn them to the hard setting is handbrake on and ign on. Basically handbrake up a notch to bring the light on also turns the rears hard so bear that in mind if you try to bounce test. I found that it simply doesnt bounce on a UK zed it is just stiff and stiffer unless the shock is stuffed and then you feel a big difference one side to the other. On mine one was totally stuffed and wet. UK Tokico 2 stage stock shocks are expensive at over £100 each but you can get import single stage ones really cheap at about £35 each. Not sure about the matching to spring rates etc tho. Not hard to change once you strip out the rear trim
  5. You need to feel for play and identify where its coming from. It can be outer joints or the inner ball joints with the arms on the HICAS rack. Also if the rear shocks are on their way out the long wheel travel over bumps can skip the car to one side.
  6. Yes I was. Also you can get part of the effect of adjustables very cheaply by fitting shim plates under the inner wing mounts for the upper arms.
  7. I did it with the Nissan Nismo bushes from the Nissan place at St Helens. Think it was about £156 for the full set. Got the number from here. Check on a top link bushes search. The people at St Helens say its the same ones for the Skyline and they sell loads to those guys. Same bushes on the Courtesy Nissan USA site.
  8. Zebedee Zed. The other one is Roger Rover :)
  9. Nope. If it was really over fuelling and the fuel was getting out the exhaust then provided it was well warmed up you would probably get popping as the unburnt fuel was ignited in the exhaust. A hot cat warning can arise too. More likely you have missed one of the hose ends that is still leaking when very cold and it is pretty cold right now. I'm not sure of my ground here but if you have a bad leak on the pipe feeding the fuel injector rail then the loss of fuel pressure could be leading to the slight misfire until heat makes the hose end seal. The one right under the fpr is still my favourite. It is still hard to see even with the middle cover off. And it can really piss fuel out under the car. Took me a 2nd winter to find it in the act. Try taking the cover off, start up from really cold. Lean right in with your head towards the middle and look to the right under the fpr. Dont get your tie caught in the fan or you'll do yourself a mischief.
  10. He was so sad he needed an on line calculator to change metres per second to miles per hour since the camera pics should how many metres he travelled between the first and second pic. He couldnt do the math otherwise. I think he was doing 13 mph - should have been arrested for that alone!;)
  11. had a few older "sports" cars with mechanical and none ever failed or leaked oil. Anyway its pressure that works the oil one and the temp one.
  12. Trust the obvious like being over 30mph and under 90 when you try it otherwise it wont! Maybe look at the brake pedal sensor. Its set so the slightest touch of the pedal drops it out. Maybe with some wear or a new master cylinder at some time it needs adjustment. Then look at the vacuum plumbing to the throttle cables etc under the bonnet Good luck with the second green light that comes on when engaged.

Dont know but my mega mileage could pass for a low mileage 4 year old car with the black leather and suede stuff virtually unblemished, no wear on the steering wheel leather or auto gear knob. One I originally looked at had the leather near worn off and a claimed 35k miles. So whoever's (company) shelled out for it looked after it well, in fact his initials are still on the K300 number plate.

Autocar 1990 roadtest put it at £34,820 on the road plus £1150 for leccy leather seats and £950 again for auto and £117 for metallic. May1990

Local car accs shop had them with 2 sensors for £40 but they look a bit naff with 4 of something the size of a black plastic wine bottle cork sticking out the back of your car
  16. US$ 60 is about £33 in real money. At that price I might buy one!
  17. My bet is the fuel pressure regulator. Looks a bit like the damper as well does the fpr. Took ages to find it on mine. There's a rubber pipe directly under the fpr it that goes down to the injector rail. So it gets well cooked after 10 years. You just cant see the petrol running down into the vee of the manifold then down the back of the engine. Try looking under the car when it smells. It takes a half tea cup worth of petrol to get a good smell going. You'll see it dripping when cold started. A mechanic might diagnose a duff fpr because of it but it was the hose on mine. Get the middle cover over the throttle cables off to get a proper look see. Spend a few quid on 8mm high pressure fuel hose and change every one you can on the engine. Doesnt take that long. A tighten up will do it for a while but the hose is hardened.
  18. Tonite - you can ask her if you can have permission as it really is about cars!
  19. They're great but really expensive. A client of mine has one on his Goldwing bike stuck to a bean bag thingy. If you want cheap sat nav and have a laptop theres a mouse thing that plugs into the usb port. Got one for £40 off Ebay and it links to Autoroute. Tweak autoroute for 2 second updates and you can see which side of the road you're driving on. Totally great for finding some place you've never been before. Alternative if you dont want the laptop one is the one that plugs in to a decent colour palm type. Mate just got one - has great colour screen and voice commands too. Anyone who pays the best part of a grand for gps now is nuts. Garman will have to cut its prices shortly In fact the Sony / Palm one the mates got can even get the speed camera data onto it then it doubles as a camera detector as well all for less than the price of a certain angel thingy.. Plus I'm trying to get the software for it to make it measure your acceleration times and calculate horsepower. Get a link to the tomtec type data off the zed interface as well and it'd be totally brill.
  20. Z bonnet is ally! Won't look good with dents in it!
  21. Think its under skyview
  22. Chilean website has it http://www.300zx.cl
  23. Yea Just got gob smacked to see one parked in a neighbours driveway. Must be 3 days old. Must have been seeing my classic one that gave him the idea;)
  24. Got to admit having watched this dross to tell you this. I think the same programme is repeated several times a week so you can still see it. Surprised to se a feature on Datsuns n Nissans including Steve Millens 850bhp racing zed. Some clips in action. Says it had stock but polished heads but an ally block and special pistons n crank but reliable for 24 hour racing! Also on about before or after this generally mind numbing car stuff is the Rev Bob Torque show it has a Sunny GTIr on the rr against a Cossie and an bloke with a Pug with a £9k leather interior. Dont miss it unless you've something better to do which isnt hard with this stuff.
