  1. Magic numbers nice n summery
  2. 140k from a 92 series 2 UK TT. full service history original tubs. Trouble begain with a sensation of a misfire sometimes also a slight burnt oil smell from time to time that I put down to an oil leak onto an exhaust. Then total loss of drive for a few seconds while parking one day then some hundreds of miles later while going at 30mph it suddenly had no drive. Whining grating noise in neutral. Drive comes back for a few minutes at a time and you get home if you are only a mile or two away but its touch and go with re starts and waiting. It even drove onto the transporter no problem to go off to get the box changed. Oil smelled bad and was burnt. Still have the old box round the back!
  3. changed a UK one for a reconned one from an import. Kept all the UK auto wiring ecu etc and the changes are exactly as before the first box expired. Kick down redlines it and part throttle changes are silk smooth. Think your problems might be down to tinkered with TPS or some other control function and not the box as such. I know that an incorrectly set TPS can cause abrupt changes.
  4. Is your battery still fitted in the proper Nissan container with the insulation in the sides? If not the heat from the turbos can cook em in a year or two. They really need the heat shielding
  5. Sorry about your predicament. I would rather have been wrong! I've been there too. Not sure what goes wrong but I suspect the whirring noise is the autobox oil pump breaking up or clutch debris fouling things. Then bits go through the oil system and a possibility is the bits clog up the oil pick up strainer blocking oil flow and then drive. By switching off a while the bits fall away and you then get drive again for a short while. I think you are left with a total box rebuild at serious cost or a 2nd hand one. Rebuilds seem to be from £1500 and up. I was lucky to find a 2nd hand one that had just been rebuilt at serious cost the year before. The boxes are same for import or UK the box ecu on the car makes the different control options. I dont think the torque converter escapes either because the debris bits can trap in the vanes and cause out of balance. I seem to remember an engine vibration around 3000rpm that disappeared when I got another box.
  6. bout £36k if a UK one
  7. Sounds like you should switch off the engine at that point and have a feel for how it is rotating - whether smoothly free wheeling or - whether the clutch has locked up prematurely indicating somthing amiss.
  8. What does a 6' parrot say? "Polly wants a biscuit" "Right fu(king now!"
  9. Thats it doing its job. When the weather is hot it needs to shift more air and the bi metal spring clutch bites due to temp.
  10. by Fraser - exactly what I did a couple of weeks ago! and put a new bit on with jubilee clips!
  11. look at the colour of the auto trans fluid. If its dirty and smelly your box is about to expire. If it is that then dont go too far from home with it as the drive can go completely and while you can get it going again for a few minutes at a time by waiting and re starting it is difficult to go more than a few miles.
  12. Slight whistle when cold and on boost is not unusual prolly due to higher cold air density and not really a problem. Anyway you shouldnt be pushing it till its warmed up! Mine has always done it and I've had it 5 years.
  13. You'll be safe enough from the eastern european gangstas that'll follow you from the airport then want to gas you in yer bed and take yer money then:)
  14. Make sure its not the 2 small water to head feed hoses above the water pump - a leak from these looks like the water pump and its very common at this age. Use a mirror and torch to have a look
  15. Optimum amount is up to the level of the filler plug. The type is in the manual online or in your handbook. It may be academic and unlikely you will ever cruise it at 100mph plus anyway but imports didnt need one because they were speed limited for the Japanese home market. My view is if it aint broke dont fix it. Most people add coolers where possible, not take them away.
  16. Having just changed the nearside turbo top coolant hose after a small leak I became very aware of how to make it leak when I wanted it to. Leaving on tickover doesnt work, the fan is too good and keeps it too cool to bring on decent pressure if its already leaking. Best is top it right up then to drive it reasonably quickly and stop, turn off, open the bonnet and wait. The heat soak will rapidly raise the water pressure and you should either feel the top hose harden or find the water leaking from somewhere. Look underneath too. Also check the seating and sealing of the radiator cap. If its not seating well it might be throwing it all out the overflow on the expansion tank. Favourite small leak points are the two short hoses just below and behind the top water connection that feed from the heads and the small turbo hoses at the back of the engine. The nearside one can spray a small jet that instantly goes to steam.
  17. At the time I think it was called R416 and cost £85 to do outside my office - the guy took two hours cos he had never done a zed before and wanted to check all the pipes for leaks. He was also amazed at what a high pressure it ran at but I had printed off the aircon manual to show him so he was ok on that. Since had him back for my other car a couple of weeks ago and he only charged about £65 for that one.
  18. The aircon system in a zed can run at over 300psi. When its lost so much gas that only 30psi is left a pressure switch locks out the compressor so no more cools. Once its getting low anyway the system battles to chill. There are drop in replacements out there and mine was done over 3 years ago with one. Others will say you have to get a R134a conversion with new drier etc but I find the drop in works fine and still does. The R134a wont be as efficient as the drop in replacement but its probably more commonly available. You can take a look in the sight glass nearby the battery when its running. If you see nothing at all then its prolly empty. Lots of bubbles is also bad. The pipe should get hot and a liquid should be visible flowing in it.
  19. Castrol RS0 40 half price at Halfords £18. Used over 30000miles of it so far changed every 4 - 6000miles and mines now at 140+k miles original tubs and runs sweet. Even the tappet rattle on start up that it had when I bought it has long gone. No leaks either. also Reduk92 tt but auto:)
  20. hammerite is pretty good and lasts! Never mind the special caliper paint, the only thing special about it is the label and price!
  21. Bout £17.49 for 4 L at Halfords - At least it was at the weekend. Stock up now!
  22. Just build a little more roads. We already paid for them so lets have em. The population isnt growing anymore by itself so if you dont keep allowing wasters in who dont tax and insure anyway you will get back to a point where it all frees up again. The expression that "cars will fill any new roads" is crap and based on an ever expanding poulation that doesnt any more. Then get rid of half the MPs and their secretarial staff to free up the roads around Westminster and also cure the hole in the ozone layer with all their hot air and wind emissions. The other congested bits will sort themselves out as people say enough and move or do something else.
  23. Mine has 140K on originals and my other car has 122k on its original Garret T28 and I drove well over 100k of them sometimes pretty hard but looked after it cold and always serviced it. They can go on a long time if looked after and not over boosted. Generally its twits who go full throttle on a cold engine who ruin them. Are you watching the local 94 batmobile kitted one on ebay? Closes today and not reached reserve - looks nice if it wasnt for the humungus rear wing. That would be the first thing I take off it.
  24. and if its a tt you'll have full boost back and better fuel consumption!
  25. The top bushes are solid so afaik there are no poly ones. Either you replace the top links or you buy the NISMO bush kits which are the same as for Skylines and will cost you about £160 delivered for all 8 bushes. You then have to knock out the old ones and drift in the new ones. I got them from Middlehurst is it at St Helens.
