Heartbleed security bug
Just a heads up really, as a business we receive our fair share of emails and scams like everyone else, however as its a real important part of our connection to the zed world we run a lot or extra security, more than maybe a casual emailer might. The recent "Heartbleed security bug" that was in the media has now spawned its own version of email crap, receiving very, very good impressions of emails from the likes of trip adviser, paypal and others suggesting that although their own security was not breached that it is a good idea to change your password anyhow, of course there is a link from the email to do this! NEVER, NEVER NEVER click the link from an unsolicited e-mail. Go to the web site of the particular trader or service you use etc. know most here will be aware but just be careful!! Jeff TT

How right you are, applies to many things other than zed bits too. Jeff TT

Odd revving/ power loss problem
Just looked and replied with the details of work done in a pm, still worth checking the running temp just to be sure on a ConZult. Jeff

Odd revving/ power loss problem
Its a very common problem and yes lots have the issue and don`t know, as a sort of litmus test when at JAE one year we did around 35 ConZults and 9 had jammed open thermostat problems!! When we do new owner assessments it is one of the items we look for, but my main decider is when doing cam belts, so to date I have completed around 1,400 documented belt swaps, in those at least a third had jammed open stats, of course the stat is changed anyway but as is often the case when done at a "normal" garage the stat remains untouched and hence 24 year old cars with 24 year old stats despite the belt service been done, imperative in my view that any cam belt service includes photo proof, no excuse with digital camera`s these days, unless of course the work has not been done as charged for ??? on a side not I have never come across a stat stuck closed on a zed, not saying it cannot happen but not seen it in 15 years. AC condenser fan - different types, wiring wise?
Yes should spin free, have changed a few over the years for this very fault. Jeff TT

Odd revving/ power loss problem
Does sound like your dropping into safety boost as said above, its possible you have a faulty thermostat that is jammed open and the engine temp is dropping below the threshold and triggering safety boost, this will lower the amount of boost and retard the ignition until the temp rises slightly again and so will full power, if this is the problem it will NOT give a code either, did a tech thread about this in the past see here: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?126426-Thermostat-tech-tip&highlight=thermostat+tech+tip Jeff TT

No high beam on o/s/f
The high beam uses a H1 bulb in an adapter, there is a 3 pin connector on it that only two pins are used, the connector themselves often go green and become a bad connection, would unplug it again and check there for the condition and or for power with a test meter. Jeff TT

intermittent poor running
Tps are not expensive new around £50 but you will need to know if its actually gone or is a bad connection/ cable fault or even an old code, worth leaving the battery disconnected for a few hours to reset and try it all again. Jeff

intermittent poor running
Yes, to get a code means either intermittent open circuit or short, bad adjustment will not show a code. Jeff TT

intermittent poor running
Its for sure a problem with the auto box going into limp home quite why is the next thing to solve, do you get any flashing lights from the power/auto when thE problem occurs at start up? Jeff TT
-
intermittent poor running
Nothing wrong with the engine! whats happening is your autobox is going in to limp home mode and selecting third gear only, that why it needs more throttle to pull away and the feeling of dragging a tank, ignition off/on just resets the aufo box ecu. So what you have is an electrical issue with the gearbox, could be a simple low voltage at start up causing the issue as the ecu does not react well to low battery voltage. There are numerous things that can cause it but check your battery terminals and ensure its fully charged. Failing that use the inbuilt diagnostic to see if there are any codes stored. Jeff TT

BULBS and lighting. - Help!
Just to confirm as there is a little confusion crept in, if your fitting a full zenon kit you will need to order the H3 fitting, this is the same be it a UK or an import model, if changing stock bulbs it remains H3 for UK cars but H3C for imports. From experience the H3 6000K kits are just perfect, get the ones with slim ballasts as they are easier to hide them away and do the earth mod to ensure they stay on when main beam is used. Jeff TT

Steering wheel issues.
Did a tech on this problem years ago, the triangle shaped inserts that will move about if the two 12 mm securing are undone would of originally been fixed to the steering column bracket by small round plastic pegs, over time these break and the movement is felt. As you have most likely worked out tightening the 12 mm nuts any tighter does nothing other than be a danger of shearing the thread off. The work around is to loosen the two 12 mm nuts, then move the the triangle sections at angles to each other to try and trap the column more effectively, other than that its a new column as they come as part of it! when getting in and out of the car there is a tendency by most to use the steering wheel to aid getting in and out and this is what breaks the plastic dowels. Auto issue
Tps adjustment is crucial to get smooth change, a bad connection on the tps will also give intermittent good/bad changes. Jeff TT

missfire at idle help (newbi) ;)
MmMm... does not explain the dodgy cylinder though, you may still have an underling problem like a low cylinder the air leak at the bovs showing it out. Jeff TT

AC condenser fan - different types, wiring wise?
TT fan has a two speed fan and the non turbo a single speed that why they are different, the ac condenser is also a different shape and size, quite why Nissan made some of these changes is unclear as would have been easier to keep them the same? Jeff TT

Idle issues
Ok have picked the bones from your original questions which should help a bit as some more information from youirself will help with any advise: 1) Be aware getting code 55 is no indication that all is well, in fact it covers very little of the engine as the system is only OBC1 which unlike later modern systems does not self report, in the main only giving an error code if one of the few sensors are disconnected or short circuited, the issue with this is something such as the afm or o2 sensors can give very poor and incorrect readings but as a signal or reading is been received be it incorrect the ecu will not see it as a fault. 2) Starting up is a good thing of course, the cutting out does it die slowly finally giving up or a sudden stop? 3) How did you check for boost leaks? 4) A disconnected maf will produce be one of the few fault reactions and code from the ecu, it also restricts the revs as a sort of limp home mode, as it runs better with it disconnected it points to a fault maf or air/boost leaks. 5) A "new" maf, as they are around £400 I am guessing you mean either a used one or a new one of the £80 units off e-bay? the later are rubbish and do not work correctly anyhow, if a second hand one unless you have seen it proven on another zed it could also be faulty. 6)Bovs are pointless on road cars unless you just like the sound of them, unfortunately they also can cause air leaks and be slow to close at high speed again causing problems with the fuel / air mix. However unless they are wide open I doubt they are this problem you have at the moment. Given at least 50% of the zeds I have dealt with over the years come to us with air/boost leaks some been more serious than others, at best it increases boost build up time (lag) and at worse makes the car flat and down on power, fuel use is worse and not good in the long term for such things as the spark plugs, often plugs have to be changed after been run in a poor performing engine. So a bit more info please to the above to aid the diagnosis Jeff TT

Autobox problem
Revolution sensor is passenger side high up towards the front of the box, this for the auto box ecu only, the dashboard rev counter gets it signal from the cas unit, the revolution sensor can be changed from the outside, its loom though is integral to the auto box loom so needs cutting in. Its a shame the auto diagnostic will not work because that very sensor is part of the test, never really found out why some zeds are more reluctant than others to not communicate for test purposes, a real pain.
