Throttle balance tech
Ok as the question was asked I thought it may be of use to show how to check and if required reset the balance on your throttle butterflys. When we do ConZult checks and set up this is by far the most common issue we see, in fact at JAE 2009 we logged that of all the zeds we checked more than 70% required this adjusting, in part I think it is due the adjuster been mistaken for the base idle adjust which of course is at the rear of the engine but unfortunately wrongly adjusting the throttles will raise the idle tickover so you can see how the mistake can be made. So to start off you will need a small screw driver and a pair of pliars or similar, the engine can be cold or warm, no need to run the engine. There are three points to deal with and with only one set of eyes you need to keep to the proceedure to get it right. Familiarise yourself with the layout of the throttles first, there are two of course both have throttle stops where the throttle mechanism should sit on when the throttle is closed, when opened both should move at the same time if one moves before the other then adjustment is required, and the adjuster is on the passenger side throttle bar. With your left hand firmly pinching the left hand throttle and stop ..... With your right hand move the throttle cable, not huge movement more of a slight bounce of the assembley.......... Whilst your left hand and right hand are busy (oh er missus!) look to the right hand throttle stop, if all is ok the throttle will still be sitting on the stop..... If however it is opening and closing whilst the other throttle remains held closed by your left hand you need to adjust the setting..... Here we can see the right hand throttle adjuster, loosen the 8 mm nut and then with a screw driver or by hand (usually easy) back off the adjuster screw (anti-clock wise) a full turn or so this will make the problem worse but its the way to do it, now slowly turn it back in feeling for it to just kiss the stop, refer back to the original test method ( both hands and eyes) and if ok lock off the stop nut if it need a bit more ( either way then adjust as required) once done nip up the nut and your finished. The issues that can be caused any bad settings are many and to name a few... reduced smothness of performance especially at low in town speeds, mpg, hestitance at take off etc. reduced top end performance.... Definately well worth checking, free and easy and can make a world of difference to both turbo and non turbo, one final point though, if the tps was set at its extreme previously along with the incorrect throttle setting it can mean the tps will need to be re-positioned also. Help!! starting problems
Common cause of hesitance coupled with poor starting is temp sensor connection or fuel damper leaking fuel into the plenum via the vacuum tube, both will cause overfueling and the problems you describe. The ptu cannot cause hesitation, it either works or it does not, well maybe sometimes it will loose odd cylinder spark but in the main when they fail its from internal overheating caused by poor connector contact leading to high current draw, a common misconception is its the heat from the engine that causes the fault, its not its internal issues, all too often the ptu is seen as the "baddy" when if after 20 years of good service why should it then fail? usually because of issues elsewhere that have not been dealt with. Do a real good check of the temp connector at the front of the engine (two pin yellow) give a clean with WD40 or similar and close up the small box pins with a knife blade slightly to give a better connection. The fuel damper sits by the drivers side balancer bar and has a small vacuum pipe leading to it, remove this and check for any smell or in fact any petrol, if either replace it as the diaphram has split. Trouble codes will appear in the engine ecu diagnostic if it is the temp sensor, quite easy to check. Jeff TT

Harnce Lift points for taking the engine out
Thread a rope ( blue nylon type) through the plenum in between the coil pack and injector area, never fails and give good balance. Jeff TT

Kaza Steve taster pics
As some of you may know Steve had a tough time getting his car sorted previously but has stayed firm and seen it through a strip down and repaint, add a wide body kit and a soon to arrive set of monster wheels and some tasty mechanical bits ( nudge, nudge) this zed is going to look top dollar, all praise to Steve for seeing it through many would have given up long ago. Shame the camera would just not show the metalic and pearl flake in paint it comes alive when the sun hits it! Jeff TT The blend the bodyshop done on the kit is flawless

800bhp Zed anybody?
Sorry did not make my point clear, when spending that kind of money surely a printed receipt is the minimum to expect from a company such as this, its bad practise in my view. Jeff TT

Where's my cylinder gone
The most common cause of this after a long period of non use is injector connections, they commonly fir up with a weird green power like substance, identify which cylinder it is by removing a coil pack connection one at a time with the engine running and then once identified clean that injector connection with WD40 or similar, be aware though the injector is 12v live at all times ( even with igntion off) so do not short the connection as it will pop an output on the ecu, if any doubt disconnect the battery whilst cleaning the connections. Wheel spacers incompatibility *WARNING*
Wheel spacers are used with no issues for many reasons, from allowing non model designated wheels to be fitted to just making the wheel track look nicer. Of these the hub centric spacers is the most expensive and the most well considered one's as they reinstated the hub connection rather than relying on the wheel nuts to centre the wheel on the hub. However not all spacers and wheels are compatible and this must be checked thoroughly, a case in point is shown in the pictures below. The spacers were fitted to the front wheels only as they offset needed to be altered to ensure the wheel spoke missed the calipers. At this stage I am not sure if they were supplied and / or fitted by the new wheel supplier or by the owner, I had been previously warned the front wheels were tight to remove off the hub even with all of the wheel nuts removed. Well this was an understatement as the wheels were held fast and with every effort been made to avoid any damage to the new wheel it took some time to remove them. But it was not the hub fit that was tight it was the incompatible spacers securing nuts fouling on the rear of the wheel spokes , in fact forcing the wheel to fit had mullered the nuts into the spoke recess! interestingly steering wheel shake was one of the items on the to check list? Always a good idea to be especially careful when marring after market parts from different suppliers /manufactures as they may be top notch gear but not necessarily work together. Jeff TT

Icelandic volcano zed victim
Been at the back of a bodyshop for 11 years waiting to be fixed hence the dust, the upside though as it has been inside for that time the shell is rust free. The engine cannot be trusted unless stripped down so a donor engine and manual conversion is planned now. Jeff

Zed parts prices
Craig, as used parts trader I can see what you mean and as its part of my lively hood its also of great importance to me. Several years ago parts from 300zx breakers were few and far between, things like leather seats for instance could be sold for £500 + but with time more zeds have ended up in breakers yards not even specialist breakers such as us, slowly the market changed with the supply and demand balance tipping to the now abundance of used standard parts.Added to this the amount of non proffesional breakers, owners that have given up and e-bay has resulted in low prices across the board now. We have had to move with these times to stay profitable and still give a good parts service but I do know how frustrating it can look when you have some top quality parts that unfortunately are to good to sell for the current expentant value. Typical telephone conversation Hello do you have any air flow meters "kicking around" We do have them but try not to kick them around! Are you sure you need one have you done any checks? Yes defo need one, the 5k I have poughed into this zed + the 4k purchase cost means I am 9K in and cannot use it to go to work or see my sick aunt in hospital, how much are they. Ok they are £90 + vat Oh? erm I will let you know Now thats frustrating! Still love zeds to bits though Jeff TT

Manual Conv. Busted Auto Radiator
The manual gearbox you have must of come from a UK zed if it has oil cooler pipes, UK zeds had a cooler fitted just in front of the rear subframe, no need to worry though simply link the pipes and forget them, no need for it. As far as the rad is concerned as you needing to replace it anyway then for £140 you may as well go for one of the alloy ones below. Meet and Ride venues
Ok so as promised in the meet and ride thread the first set of meets are set out below, the date is set for the first one the other six I will add over the next few days as I am awaiting info back from both Western Park and Donington Park. All of the meet points have been chosen to be easy to find and the cruise on A roads with no speed humps etc! the final locations should be interesting and give good photo opportunities, free entrance is paramount and by bringing your own food and drink pinic style it makes for fun without the cost, except the fuel of course!! All the dates will be Saturdays as it seems that Sunday meets are less well received by partners etc with back to work Monday morning, meet times will be need to be set for it to work with 30 mins or so arrive and chat and then on to the venue all in good style, remember we will be representing the 300zx club so no "fast and furious" style driving, we all have the same cars anyhow Any suggestions will be considererd if provided in the same style as set out here. Ok with the success of these meets been up to you guys the first one been a sort of test trial so lets see what happens!! Going rate for engine rebuild
Block only £2k + trouble is that has to be concidered a part rebuild only and no warranty could be emplied due to the rest of the engine been unknown condition, to be fair any builder with any decency will explain the ins and outs of part builds and advise accordingly. Given the previous and dubious engine work my guess is who ever you get to do the rebuild will want the whole engine, just so there are no surprises along the way, best to budget for a full rebuild and then anything less is a bonus, speak with Jimmer, he will sort you out.
