For them old enough to remember
Loads of colours, have seen on the net that there was a few special editions like the black one with metaflake paint, cannot remember them though. Jeff

No not just you think we all did that, made a bloody racket but that was the point...I think. Jeff

For them old enough to remember
Oh what a blast from the past, I had an orange Mk1 with the different gear knob and the rear frame was different where it met the rear axle which led to many kids cracking their head on the tarmac when the front wheel went up. On the Mk ll the handlebars where fixed at the head but the MK l you could undo them and rotate them right back and with that earlier frame design meant you basically rode around on the back wheel most of the time!! but then when your 13 yrs old thats cool!!! One thing I can remember is the price in 1973 was £39.99!!! bugged my Dad for months to get one and when I did I was up at 6.00am riding around checking myself out in the shop windows.....sad or what? not really do the same in my zed now! Having a Raleigh Chopper gave you instant membership to the cool kids club where I lived. Jeff TT

Engine temp alarm
Yes the sensor is using thermo-coupling which of course makes it universal and acurate too. Jeff TT

Engine temp alarm
This looks interesting, a sure way of tracking and monitoring engine temp added to an overheat alarm and a block sensor that does not rely on engine coolant temp for sensing. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180574425360&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT Jeff TT

Why is it after working around ramps, jacks, air tools, 2 ton zeds etc all day I get home and get an injury straight away!! Working on my bathroom conversion and 2 minutes later a piece of 6 x 4 chipboard leaning up the wall falls over with my back to it ( so did not know it was coming ) and Wham get hit in the back of the leg by said sheet of wood..........OUCH!!!! flipping smarted I can tell you!! drivers window not working
Copied and pasted from a previous thread>>>> Drivers side window issues? the window power amp controller has a habit of failing leading to an intermittent or non working window, lucky it is a very easy fix and free to boot if you can use a soldering iron. The unit in question is fitted in the drivers door, it is held in place with a single 10m bolt and has one 8 way connector plugged in to it, roughly just off central towards the rear of the door. Once removed the outer case needs easing off the lower connector area, the internal part then slides out in one piece. Photo 1 shows the internal parts of the unit and the pcb its all mounted on removed from the outer case, the two relays to the left are the output up and down for the window motor and the steel busbars to the right are the connection interface to the door wiring loom and the source of the problems. Photo 2 shows the unit end up where the connector goes in and again the source of most issues the unit suffers from. Photo 3 shows the rear of the pcb and the area in red is where the connector busbars are soldered to, not easy to see the problem yet. Photo 4 shows the problem in clearer detail, the pin solder has failed and this is the cause of the intermittent or no connection and the failed window operation. Photo 5 shows the method of repair, by applying a soldering iron to the effect area the solder will reflow and make a new connection. Photo 6 shows the final result, a nice solid connection that will get that window operating again, just put the unit back together and refit to the door. Happy fixing Jeff TT

Power Steering cooler - do you need it?
Cannot see any issue without it, only UK cars had one fitted anyway, bigger risk of damage from it letting go on the motorway, delete away. Jeff TT

compression test results?
Given the age and mileage of most original zed engines thats not too bad, trouble with compression testing it has so many variables that can effect the result such a battery charge level, operators gauge accuracy, throttle opening when done etc. it should be viewed as part of the engine information not all of it. Seen many zeds in good running order that boost well and return acceptable mpg with not especially good readings. Rebuilding with forged pistons is nice rather than a requirement, when its all apart the difference in price is just the parts cost as the labour is the same. Jeff TT

compression test results?
The closer to 180 psi the better, needs to be done with all plugs out and a well charged battery. Jeff TT

clunking from transmission
Seems like you have more than one issue, I would start with getting the engine set up checked out as I suspect that may have some bearing on it. Holding onto 1st gear is usally an incorrectly set tps ( throttle position sensor) (If backing off the throttle makes it change from 1st to 2nd a bit quicker it definately is the tps) When the "hold" mode is used 1st gear is not used so it pulls away in 2nd hence the reason the long change is gone, also so will be the quick pull away!! good for use in ice conditions though. Shunting in 3rd and 4th that feels like backlash could be an issue with the gearbox mount or even an issue with the engine, possible high speed misfire / air leak Get an engine ConZult diagnostic done and a visual inspection for the gearbox mount. snapped downpipe studs
Remove the turbo elbows from the car and with a thin angle grinder wheel cut two slots into the elbow in a closing V shape where the stud is located and you will be able to get the stud out then, when reassembling use long nuts and bolts with good washers on, sounds odd but is so much easier than drilling out. is there a window 'relay'?
There are no other relays, the black amp box deals with both windows in that respect, it looks like you must have a wiring issue. Jeff TT

ARC Intercooler holed by a wood screw
Clutch is well up to the job no worries, forward planning is the key, yes will update you on the intercooler Jeff
-
ARC Intercooler holed by a wood screw
Yes cool, actually I think the screw was in fully at some point and was sealing the hole, but as alloy is soft over time the weight of the wood hanging of it has worked the screw out. Jeff

Auto gearbox oil

Kerb damaged wheel fix
You may remember the zed that met a kerb on the way to have an MOT, the repair I did a thread about (below) http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=147497 Mostly bolt on new parts the one thing we could not fix was the very nasty looking damage to the wheel, as can be seen below, so it left is with two loan wheels until a replacement was found. Had the opportunity to see the zed again and complemented the owner on the spanky new wheel and thought how lucky he had been to be able to buy just one, you can imaging my surprise when he explained that it was the old one repaired!!! marvellous job done on it, all for £75 Bargain!! Amazing what can be repaired and to such a high level too.

ARC Intercooler holed by a wood screw
Hopefully not, dropping it off at local intercooler manufacturer see if they can fix it. Jeff

ARC Intercooler holed by a wood screw
Brillomaster mentioned yetersday how he had suffered from someones previous bad work that came to light when having a chip upgrade, the boost leak was bad!!!! seems someone had used a bit of wood to add some firmness to the bottom of his 99 spec bumper due to missing fixings, unfortunately one of the screws had pierced the intercooler. Took some picures and thought they may serve to keep all owners alert to taking care when drilling etc. on zeds. Jeff TT

130w main headlight filaments....
Excellent demonstration showing how the increase in current drawn by the larger bulb will compromise the small supply cables, however also you need to appreciate that the cable is actually too small to supply a constant 10 amps and so will act as a resisitive load itself which in turn draws more current and this is where the cable and bulb suffers from overheating especially at connection points not designed for the extra current, using relays and new power supplies would be ok though, using the existing cables to switch the low power relay coil circuit. Are all boot locks the same?
The boot lock barrel has anti tamper tumbler built in, it activates if a key other than the correct one is inserted and locks the barrel, unfortunately as the keys start to wear it sometimes drops down with the correct key! But no need to replace, just disassemble the barrel and reset the first keyway closest to the key entry end of the barrel, and all will be working again. The job is a bit fiddley but as it is a free repair its worth having a go. Jeff TT
