  1. Both of my import zeds have had really lazy seatbelt retraction. I guess there is something that can be done about that but what I (and some of my passengers) have noticed is that when I turn off the ignition the seatbelts pull back slightly. Cant think why that would be. Anybody else noticed this? Anyone know why? Anybody care? David
  2. really feel for you mate. I did a similar thing to my first zed hitting railings by a bus stop. What I did afterwards was drink quite a lot of beer. The up side of my story is that my insurance agreed a realistic valuation and paid up promptly and I'm back zedding again. Hope it all works out OK David
  3.    Sorted!! Back on the road tonight with a new rear wheel bearing and a new hub and new 300zx.co.uk stickers :) and no money left for petrol
  4. Is it possible to check the condition of the belt without taking much of the car apart?
  5. That car does look really nice! Been wondering what mine will look like when I can aford to get its 99 front end and de-spoliered. Wish the photos on the dealer site were a bit bigger. For what its worth, I love my NA - but then I haven't played in a TT yet...
  6. After listening to a horror story about a colleagues Alfa snapping its timing belt over the hols this has jumped right up my list of priorities! All I have is a verbal assurance that the belt was done "about 17,000 miles ago". Anyone know a place that they trust round Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham that has done this sort of stuff and doesn't cost the earth? Cheers David
  7. Best advice I can give is look at lots until you find find a good one. I agree that the best place to start looking is probably forum members. My fisrt one was from a friend and it was a belter - unfortunately I crashed it into a fance and wrote it off :( Looked at zeds all over the country until I found one that compared. and obviously check out the links/FAQs section for the buying guide! Happy searching! David
  8. Thanks Paul, Been busy with dremmel, then chisel & hammer. Done the trick! The drive flange is really badly stepped - which I assume is wrong!! don't think I'm going to be back on the road for a little while :( Any idea ho much for a new one?
  9. Busy trying to fit a new rear wheel bearing. Got the old one off but have a couple of problems... Firstly, part of the old bearing inner surface has seized to the wheel hub. Any advice on how to get that off? Tried heating the thing up in oven but hasn't made any difference. Secondly, the hub surface that fits inside the bearing seems worn and quite loose. Should there be any play in this or should it be a really snug fit? If the wheel hub is knackered too anyone know how much one of those is? Cheers David
  10. Aren't the main beam bulbs just standard off the shelf jobs? I replaced both of mine, just took one into a local car shop. Can't remember the bulb type though. I know the dipped headlights are different. Got a couple of spare jap spec bulbs after doing the conversion if anyone is desparate for them ... David
  11. Have a feeling you might be right Paul, my socket set goes up to 32 and I'm sure it was bigger than my largest one. Didn't start the job yesterday anyway, ended up going to see The Return of the King instead - fantastic! anyway, another question. I was reading the service manual again on the procedure for changing the wheel bearing. It says you should remove the entire axle housing. Is this essential or can the bolts for the wheel bearing assembly be undone with it in place? If it does have to come off, is there any problem with the suspesion ie do I need to be worrying about spring compressors or anything like that? Cheers David
  12. anyone know what size socket I'm going to need for the rear wheel bearing lock nut? Though I best check before I start the job! Happy new year all! David
  13. Finally arrived today     Fantastic! Got my wheel bearing too so get the zed back on the road tomorrow (hangover permitting!)
  14. I had a similar problem when I first bought my VW scirocco. After a bit of fiddling about it turned out to be a 50p piece wedged on top of the switch!! Cheapest car fix ever? 50p profit!
  15. I've got... a westone rainbow I semi a Vintage EVH a Simon & Patrick cedar accoustic a pod 2 a Fender strat being delivered today  where is that bloody van!! Can't really play any of them  but I love it Anyone played with powertab software much? Just discovered it recently. Absoltely fantastic for learning and playing along with. David
  16. I've just cleaned mine (and done the h3 bulb conversion) following the help and links in this thread... http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25625&highlight=headlights Tried to get the lens case open to do the job properly but lost my bottle a bit so went for the coat hanger approach. Worked ok in the end but you have to be patient. Stuck a couple of 30% brighter bulbs from Halfords in there and the difference in spectacular. I imagine with more expensive bulbs it would be even better. David
  17. Waiting for my present to myself to arrive - getting a new guitar too! Fender '50s Mexican Stratocaster :) Should get it tomorrow, can't wait What guitar did you get Stuart? David
  18. a little warning to any of you lot prowling the streets of North Tyneside. I've just seen a vauxhall VX220 spread all over the road in exactly the same spot as I wrote off my first zed. Billy Mill roundabout coming onto the bottom of the Coast Road - can't remember its road number. Not a rear wheel drive friendly spot I think! Saw the driver - he seemed ok but looked gutted. Brought all the memories back :( - really felt for him. Not a good xmas present for him, that’s for sure! David

and have a look at my thread. http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25924&highlight=mats James kindly posted the pics for me. David
  20. got a poorly rear wheel bearing. Can anyone give me an idea of cost for these? Is it an easy DIY job? Any specialist tools required? Are the parts readily available? (car is a '91 NA) Should I be thinking of doing both rear ones? Cheers David
  21. First day of my hols and decided to spend it with my zed. Managed to do... replace front disks and pads... replace both screen wash nozzles... clean inside of both headlights, lights out and coat hanger job... convert lights for h3 bulbs and stick in some 30% brighter jobbies - a major contribution to road safety!! I can see again  and its so easy with the lights out (the conversion, not 'seeing' ). Only downside (I guess there always has to be one!) went to investigate what the noise from the rear brakes was. Wheel bearing shot  The nut was really loose (could move it with my fingers!! Torqued it up and its loads better but some nasty grinding noises on corners :( On the whole a good day. Big thanks for all the advice and links on here, wouldn't have tackled any of the jobs without them!! Just a shame I can’t really drive it until that bearing is sorted David
  22. yes, fuel gauge on mine works fine but the light stays on even on those all too frequent but brief moments when its full to the brim with optimax. Mind the warning light is so dim I hardly notice it, especially in daylight. Don't think it get my attention if it was a real fuel emergency!
  23. no advice I'm afraid but can offer sympathy. Mine is exactly the same except it lacks the air of mystery - it's just on all the time. will watch this thread with interest...
  24. what are the symptoms of a sticky lifter? cheers David
  25. Yea! Fixed! Cheers folks. Maybe time for my first ever... Just need to get some decent photos now
