  1. does anyone know anywhere that stocks these Wix filters in the North East? I'm busy ringing round but so far have only tracked down some unipart ones for ~30 quid for the pair
  2. cheers, I will try to hunt out some of the Wix ones tomorrow. Think the induction kit will have to wait for another day. Too many things to fettle first! David
  3. are the stock air filters in a zed readily available anywhere? had a look in halfords and of course they aren't listed. Was wondering if they are used in any other nissans? cheers David
  4. cheers folks. I took it out for a spin myself (just to check she wasn't doing somethging daft or making it up) and sure enough, it ran great for about 45 minutes at all speeds. I had forgotten what life was like before power steering! Wheel balance was well out! thought it was going to shake my teeth out at 80!! Then cruising back at 70 the engine just died without any warning at all. No real stuttering to speak of, just stopped. I'm thinking something electrical. Was wondering if the imobiliser could be playing up or something shorting? Car is totaly stock. I've heard the same about the carbs and used to quite fancy sticking a weber on it. Hope its not that now though coz what little spare cash I've got is destined to get spent on my zed! think I will concentrate on the coil, distributor, leads, plugs etc. Make sure all that's OK. Anyway, thanks for you suggestions, plenty stuff to look at tomorrow! After I had been out in the VW, my Zed refused to start  seems to be running fine now, obviously just trying to teach me a lesson!
  5. my old car (now driven by the missus) is a '91 VW scirocco GT2. Its non injection 1.8. Its started misbaving for the first time since I got it 9 years ago (most likely a cry for attention since I got my new zed :) ). Anyway, I going to have a look at it today but I'm a bit clueless. Thought some of you mechanicaly minded types might be able to give me some pointers. The symptoms seem to be that its starts fine and runs OK until its warmed up and then at speed (~70) the engine just seems to stutter and die. Its intermittent and if the car is left for a bit will normally restart and run OK for a bit. Any suggestions where I should start looking? Cheers David
  6. MAC1, I really like the ones shown in the link to the rides section you posted. Don't supose you know if there are any plans, dimensions etc kicking around for them? Cheers David
  7. I was one of the confused black zed drivers in Whitley last bank holiday :) PHatty, were you the one parked at the bottom of south parade? How many semi-clad little minx's did u manage to fit in the back? ;) Haven't seen the white one yet, there are a couple of silver ones about though...
  8. just a quick qestion, are the bulbs for the spolier brake light readily available? Looked in Halfords at the weekend and got some smililar ones that fit the holder but wouldnt fit into the glass!! If they are, where from? Cheers David
  9. cheers folks. I'm off on holiday for a couple of weeks now which is really frustrating having just got a new car!! sounds like I best not spend too much dosh while I'm away. I assume this is the sort of work any competent garages/mechanics can undertake or do I need to seek out specialists? cheers david
  10. only when driving. The engine sounds smooth as a smooth thing when I just rev it :) I've never driven a manual zed before but it feels to me that the stick kicks quite a lot when I release the clutch. Don't know if thats normal but I suspect that may indicate gearbox support too. think that will be the first thing I look at when I get back from my hols.

I went to look at a 90 import NA at a place near Durham. They were asking 6k for it!! They had put a rather nice cream leather interior in but still!
  12. quote for premium was £650 - not the best I know, but used to be really bad for car crime around here. Used to pay about the same for my 1.8 scirocco! as for replacement value, they were looking at stuff on the autotrader website - the same stuff I had printed out in front of me. They started low, ~£1600. Once I had convinced them that my car had a working autobox and healthy engine (mentioning that I had a nissan consult report helped) we settled on 3700. exactly what I paid for my new one. David
  13. Got a problem with moderate levels of vibration in my new zed. Seems to be rev related, between 3 & 4k. Previous owner informs me that drift shaft barings have been replaced. From searching here it seems to be gear box mounts and drive shaft balancing are likely candidates. Is there anything else to look at? Any top tips on diagnosing problems like this or a best order to attack the likely causes? Cheers David
  14. Hi folks. Finally got a replacement zed! Picked it up on Saturday morning. First chance I've had post, been too busy tinkering and driving. She's really polished up nice. She's a '90 Import NA Manual in metalic black with leather. This may be useful to some of you, my insurance was with Norwich Union Direct. I found them to be very quick with inspection, negotiation and payout. Agreed a sum that has allowed me to buy a car that I think may turn out to be better than my first one :D although it took some shopping around!! Hope I'm still smiling come renewal time. Feels good to be back. Can't grin wide enough! Think its time to dig out a cheque for 20 quid  Oh yes, hello to the other two black zeds I've seen in Whitley Bay this weekend if you're out there. David
  15. Junior bayarno I may be in the market for an NA (insurance cheque is on its way!) and could be very tempted by a SWB. Any more details? any pics? Cheers David
  16. Firstly, thanks to all those who offered condolences on the untimely death of my Zed last week. I'm still feeling the pain but it’s comforting to know I'm not the only daft sod who has gone backwards off a roundabout and killed their pride and joy. I'm hoping to get rejoin the world of zed ownership as soon as possible but need to get through the insurance business and work out what my options are. Realistically, what is the pay out I should be looking for, for a '90 jap import NA in fine mechanical order (96k km) ? If it is written off, and I am inclined to do anything with it (possibly just use it for parts) what is the sort of price I should be haggling for with the insurance company? I know that costs vary so much depending of condition etc but grateful for any advice. If I was to buy an NA with a poorly auto box what should I be expecting to pay for a transplant operation? Also, how much would I expect to pay for an engine transplant? (mine was very good and I think undamaged in crash) Cheers David
  17. Well, I'm busy drowning my sorrows. I've managed to kill my zed. Coming off a roundabout on slightly wet roads. Guess I must have been a bit enthusiastic with the power. Lost the back end, tried to recover it but didn't have enough space. Hit the railings with the front, span and clipped the back too. Haven't had the chance to fully check out the damage yet but it looked like front & rear bumpers, both headlights, air filters/fan/radiator & god knows what else under there, bonnet, and front wings, tailgate & rear off side. Looks like a write-off :( Trying to be philosophical about it. I guess any crash where no one is hurt is a win of sorts but still absolutely gutted. I had such big plans for that car... Anyway, I learned a hell of a lot about cars in the short time I owned and tinkered with it (although the last lesson was a bit harsh  ) and that's mostly down to the info and advice given on this site. So thanks for that. Perhaps its time to start saving for a TT Manual now! I'll keep you posted as to what happens to it. It is/was a '90 Jap spec N/A auto that was absolutely sound mechanically so there may be some decent pickings for the vultures out there. gutted David :(
  18. I see Pete has it all covered but if you want pictures too try... door trim removal David
  19. seem to remember I found a 'how to' on 300zx.org.uk but I think the only bit that almost got me was the screws hidden under the felt bit at the bottom of the driver side door handle. I had to get a load of new trim clips from nissan to get them back on right but it sorted out a load of rattles :) David
  20. cheers, It does look good - one for the wish list. I get the feeling this car will never run out of ways to make me skint!
  21. Anyone know how much the ConZult software, cable etc cost? Cheers David
  22. hmmm, not sure this is the right afternoon to ask a real question but here goes... I've been looking at the service ztoys.net offer for leather steering wheels where you order a new core with your choice of leather then send your old core in when it arrives. Does anyone in the UK offer a similar service or anyone sent theirs over to the ztoys? Are you happy with results? Was there extra postage costs etc? sorry to interupt the madness! :D David
  23. sorry james, no offense!! :o If the bit in yours is in one piece I would really appreciate it - and I appreciate you looking even if it isn't. Still have the other one to fix though
  24. Cheers b19rks top tip - I'll give it a go. David
  25. took one apart for a quick look. There is an alloy plate that the screws screw into. This is shattered into 3 bits. Guess they have been overtightened in the past or something but I guess that would be in response to an already wobbling mirror. Maybe I could find a cosmetically broken one and canablise it. If any one out there has one give me a shout. Cheers David
