Changing high level brake lights bulbs for LED bulbs
I too have tried LEDs, and junked them because they were way too dim. Maybe later ones are OK but take care.

Hicas eliminators
Thanks Mark, I stuggle with spending £200.00 on a simple bit a metal, and as I said Newera are doing Skyline ones for £75.00. Thanks for the offer, not saying yours is not worth it generally I just think they are too expensice. Could you measure it exactly for me please? maybe a small drawing? Thanks

Hicas eliminators
OK thanks, anyone know the length of one for a Z?

Tyre wear - which lasts longest?
Might be good to list Nankang. I know they are cheap, £62.00 for 255/40/17, and so some will slag them off, rightly perhaps, but tyre technology gets better all the time so who knows until you try them.

Hicas eliminators
Hi, is the hicas on a skyline the same as a Z, I ask because Newera parts sell eliminators for £75.00 but are for Skylines. Anyone know?

Differences between SWB LWB?
SWB have to be lighter, so everything else being equal have to be faster. They dont have a tank, possibly full of fuel hanging out the back, so more of its (lesser) weight inside the wheelbase. Being shorter they should be more nimble but less stable at high speed. Being lighter they should stop quicker. Everything else being equal etc. And I have got one of each and the SWB def looks better.

overheating nightmare
Most garages have a "sniffer" that will smell the water to tell if the head gaskets leaking. Also some plumbers use one. Actually Gas Engineers. Try your local British Gas man and offer him a fiver?

Anyone fitted a Renualt Laguna wiper to the back of their Zed?
Looks like a nice car, who did you get it through? And you could always use a bit of string on a Laguna parked somewhere to give you an idea before you buy.

Head gasket?!!?
Sounds like you got it pretty hot, which is not a good thing. Have a good look for other damage and dont just assume its a head gasket only. I dont know if Z'z warp the heads but you could check. And make sure it spins over nicley (sort of) before you just do head gaskets. Hate you to do the haeds just to find there is more.

Auto Gearchanges?
If your box is too smooth this can be a sign that things are on their way out. But if its OK the valve body on the Z can be modded to make the changes alot better. More responsive ie quicker acting to throtle imput. And stronger too.

Exhaust system
When the Soarer forum was up and running they used to think someone there in Soton was good, not sure of the name, sorry...

ATTN SWB Owners, please
If I needed to, could you draw round yours? Just the top and bottom? ;-)

ATTN SWB Owners, please
Those boxes your making look good, nicely made too. I need to keep room for the targa's. Have you got any plans for the boxes? Something you cut around? Thanks.

ATTN SWB Owners, please
Hi, I have a SWB now as well as a LWB, what have you guys done with regard to music, to be precise rear speakers? Thinking of building something for them right behind the seats, one each side, or maybe a sub in the middle on that stupid weak flat thing. Any ideas?

Exhaust system
With regard to zero back pressure causing turbo seal problems there was a survey some months ago, results were no it does not. IIRC. And if you look at a turbo seal, what its made of and where it sits I cant see why it would anyway.

Two Oils, one's noisy, one not
Slightly confusing title but this is really for info only. My son has a tuned S13, we have just rebuilt the engine and on Sunday replaced the turbo. It had done about 200 miles on a decent 10w40 with no probs. Fitted the turbo and took the opp to change the oil, but we had no oil, duurhh. It was Sunday eve, so he went to the local gararge and bought some Semi 10w40, Esso. Tappets rattled on tickover. Changed it for Valvoline 15w40, quite as a mouse. Ok, I know the grades are different on the "third" oil, but the first and second were both 10w40. One was quiet, one was noisy. As has been hinted/mentioned on here before, choosing the correct "make" is just as important as the correct grade and quality.

Rebuilt Bottom end
Ah well, this is where things get interesting. When I spoke to you you said this, ie, about the sizes stamped on the crank etc. However on my engine the stampings are NOT the same as the shells that came out. I know this is a fact because the stamps list 3 different sizes of bearing, (big end) and yet the journals and the shells are all the same. And the journals are the correct size for the shell. So you might say, ok the cranks been reground. But the size of the journals is standard. I had to buy a micrometer to measure them. Also it appears that the part numbers change when compared to the actual bearing and the box they come in, depending on the quantity inside the box. So, all in all I couldnt make up my mind what to do for a while, in the end, after buying a mike and measuring lots I simply replaced the shells for like sized new ones. As the shells were almost perfect apart from the thrust parts of the mains I felt safe.

Rebuilt Bottom end
Hi All, some time ago I posted a thread on here asking for advice on a funny noise I had on my Z. Allways hard to give help on a noise on a forum without hearing it. But I suspected bottom end. Anyway, no one had any real idea, so I stripped the bottom end, in the car. I had some very poor advice, not from here, about how hard this was and how long it would take. Basically I was told it was a pig of a job and would take many hours. My son and I had the sump off and the bearings inspected in about 2 hours. It was so easy. Upon inspection there was no sign of problems, until I looked at the thrust bearings of the main bearing shells. One side was worn to the brass/copper looking metal. So I replaced both big ends and main bearings, by the way inside the engine was spotless. Started the car recently. It took probably 4 hours to put it back together again, and, touch wood, it is now sweet again. Held at 2000rpm it is like a sewing machine. That good by the way. Hardest thing was to get the correct parts, as there are so many variations (Jeff TT supplied them, thanks Jeff and Son)... So anyone thinking of doing this, do it, its easy. Dont let others tell you different. Dont take the engine out just for bottom end probs unless you need a crank grind etc.
