DOT 4 & 5.1 are both mineral fluids. confusingly DOT 5 is synthetic & is not compatible

pushing the pistons back would not allow air in the system. however, brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years anyway, so it would be a good idea to do it anyway :)

compression tests should be done on a hot engine, but you wouldnt get 1 down that far when cold :( as andy says - cyl leakage test next

i agree, intercoolers are extremely overpriced for what they are!! captive market i suppose, theres only a few makes out there, & they all charge similar prices. its a conspiracy!!! :D

sounds like a problem in the valve chest to me, poss a sticking pressure regulating valve. when it does engage, does it engage smoothly or harshly (like a small jolt?)
