Waiting on arrival of the donor Z.. Eta around 5:30pm... Tools out tomorrow then! The wife still doesn't know it's coming.. Although I think she suspects something as I cut the grass in the front garden for the first time in two years this morning.. Gonna go dig out my cricket box and the car cover.. Act natural when she comes home and hopefully she won't notice.. :whistling:

I've been looking at the mintex disc and pad sets and I can say that I've never had any complaints with them in the past. I used them on my previous xtrails and never had any issues. Obviously they aren't going to last as long as the more expensive stuff but £200 for a full set of grooved and drilled discs and pads isn't exactly breaking the bank as far as these things go is it.. Apes are good too and cheaper than ebc and brembos etc..

No, not copying anything really, just sticking to red and gold throughout the car. I wish I had the cash to have the engine out and do everything I'd like to, but when it's your daily and you're skint 25 days a month, it kinda stops you living the dream lol.. I saw an engine done exactly how Id like to do it, but never gonna afford it.. Not in this life anyway! I'd love to do this, but I'd flip the scheme, gold plenum etc.. I think this is beautiful.. Had to message the guy and tell him that too..

Series one jdm tt.
Hi all.. I'll be receiving a donor car on Saturday, it's a jap 2+2 TT auto. Engine is gone but everything rise is there.rear end of Body being used for project but the front end including wings, oem front bumper with lights indicators etc all there. Interior is leather but looks like a tiger was let loose inside so retrimming is an absolute must! Blue leather door cards dashboard trims etc in ok condition as far as I'm aware. Will know more when I receive on Saturday.. I'm told the auto gearbox is working very well. Car had big end bearing go and it's sat since engine removal. If there's anything you need, let me know and I'll check for availability and condition and get back to you. Let the vultures bone picking commence! :devil2:

The problem with the fan shroud and hydrographic film is that the shroud is a very strange shape to cover. If you look at the shroud, it has two angled sections that completely oppose eachother, so as you pass the shroud through the dip at 30 degrees, the water rushing over the edges of the shroud pulls the film away from the edges of the angled section

What you need to take in to account though Alic is that failures do happen.. The fan shroud I'm trying to dip today is being a little s#@t! Complex shapes particularly on large parts are an effin nightmare tbh.. So if you are thinking of giving it a go, be prepared to fail a few times mate, it's gonna happen believe me! I'm on the third attempt in about half hour once I've finished cleaning the last one off with acetone. Critical timing and angle of the push through the dip are hard to master in an environment that really isn't perfect for something so fiddly. My advice is if you need a metre to do your parts, buy at least 2!

The carbon comes in a couple of types, the full weaves are usually solid but the others are mostly clear and will show the Base colour through it. If you look at the prices on both sites though, you'll notice that dip this prices are per metre and also of the films are 50cm width. Hydrographic warehouse sells in 5 metre volumes as a minimum and most of their film is 100cm width so prices aren't that much different to be honest.

There's quite a few places to get the supplies but the best I've found so far are these two.. http://www.Hydrographicswarehouse.co.uk And http://www.dipthis.co.uk All you basically need is the film of your choice and the activator spray. They do clearcoat designed for the film but the normal automotive clearcoat lacquer is fine and to be honest it's probably the same stuff in a different can anyway! Other than a good sized container and a thermometer that's about it. I've found that keeping the water temperature at the right level is quite easy as the larger volume of water holds its temperature for plenty long enough to dip a few parts. If you plan on dipping a lot or doing it in winter months then a decent fish tank heater will work. I've had a good look at a pro set up and it's fairly basic, simply consisting of a large tank with basically a fish tank filter system which cleans the tank for you, a water heater and a temperature control. As long as your water temp is around 28-30 degrees and you've taken the time to practice a bit and get to know the perfect dipping stage, then being a pro dipper really isn't that difficult.. Give it a go Richie, it's certainly a whole lot cheaper than getting it done.. Results may not be as perfect as a pro job, but that'll be down to you to get it right.. The parts I've dipped so far would have cost me in excess of £175 and it's cost me £40 with still enough materials left to do more. Can't really argue with that can you?

Yea, that's quite possible Alic, I'd recommend you really practice it and get the hang of it before you attempt a piece that size though.. You'll have to have a real steady hand to keep it straight and level as you dip, cos if the angle is wrong, the weave will distort.. As I said, if you have some time on a weekend, you're welcome to come and have a look at how it's done, and have a go if you like..

Why? Are you thinking of giving your kids the carbon look? Lol.. Seriously, I bought a big square plastic tub on ebay for £25 and it's just big enough to dip my fan shroud in. I was thinking of putting a fish tank filter in it and a drain tap to make cleaning and disposal of the water easier but haven't got round to that one yet. If I decide to make it a little sideline for the future I'll spend a little more money on getting a decent tank put together, but for small personal needs, this is good enough. Having the basic setup is one thing, but perfecting the process is another.. There is a knack to it, you can tell exactly when the film is perfect for dipping but it's such a tiny window that it's very easy to miss. I seem to be able to get it fairly close now but there were a few failures along the way! If you're going to give it a go yourself, just be prepared to waste a little film before getting it right. You're welcome to come over and see how it's done or even bring a couple of bits and have a go yourself on a weekend Alic. We don't exactly live far apart and I'm usually free most weekends. I'm going to be dipping the plastics from the inside of the door cards this weekend and I'm still contemplating doing the scuttle panels, the thin trims that run over the car roof and also the perspex strip. It's all swimming round in the brain at the moment until I decide.. Best thing is with dipping, you can dip something and see how it looks, if you like it, you clearcoat it. If you don't, you get the nail varnish remover and wipe it off!

To be honest Alic, there's not much to show you. It is literally just a plastic 90 litre square tub filled with water! The film and a spray can of activator. That's it.. You don't need anything special, just a container to fill with water big enough to fit the film in to and deep enough to fully submerge the parts being dipped. You can watch the whole process from start to finish by putting " home hydrographic dipping " in the search bar on YouTube. Everything you need to know is there mate.

I bought the whole engine bay kit off him and the whole lot has gone in to be coated in gold. my plan is to resin fill the cut out logos with red resin and then I am hoping to backlight the red... I've got to try and work out if the wiring is going to be viable as it could be complicated due to heat and cable routing etc, I don't want it to look untidy. It'd be a show piece only, so independent power supply to run it all. Not sure if it'll work out, but if not, the resin fill will look nice anyway and keep things in theme.

I know what you mean, the dremel needs a real precision hand to get things right. I'm quite good with it though as I used to make jewelery and carvings with it.. Not really sure what to do now.. As the finish on it is really shiny, it makes me feel like leaving as is, but the finish isn't perfectly flat I do have to say. I'll ponder over it a while as it in no rush to fit them. They'll be being fitted when I have the rest of my engine work done along with the freshly painted fan shroud, fan, plenum, turbo hoses and rocker covers. I am planning on dipping the rocker covers aswell but i have to get them back from the guy that's coating them first! Hopefully by Tuesday next week I've been told. Coopd, Richies doing some great gear now.. I've got the full engine bay set off him in stainless which is being coated aswell.. I've got a little project lined up for those but wont say too much about that right now until I know my idea is possible..

You don't fancy changing your name to grim by any chance do you? Lol.. Have you seen the fine detailing on these covers? Don't know if I could get anything in between the bits and bobs sticking out of it! I've got a dremel and some fine finishing paste so I'll give it a go.. Trust you to make me work harder! Lololol.. I must say though, they already very shiny..

Final lacquer coat now curing and I can honestly say.. Who needs to pay for hydro dippers? Very happy with the final result! Got to move on to the trickier bit now... The radiator fan shroud... I've decided to dip the plastic trims from the doorcards aswell. They're colour coded already so why not huh? Lol.. Wish me luck..
