Jspec cooler is built into the end tanks of the Water radiator. Its too small, and gets heatsoak from the Radiator and vice versa. You can purchase a replacement oil cooler and either use that for the gearbox, or the popular setup of using the new cooler for the engine oil and the old engine oil cooler for the gearbox. Are you sure you dont have a gearbox oil leak ? Smell is very distinctive.

Neither of those problems are normal. Only problem you tend to get is crunching between 4th and 5th as it has a weaker syncro than the other gears..but thats still rare and with higher mileage.
