Found out what that tapping noise was...
Well either way i do it, im going to be saving cash due to the price i got the insurance at lol, plan was, to basically strip the old engine out, and get Jeff at Zedworld to put my new engine in, phoned him this morning and left a message, just waiting on the phone call back so we can discus about what i want to do. Still need to sort out where this bad earth on the drivers side headlight is before i would be able to take it for an MOT List of problems on the car Drivers side headlights not turning on properly, they light up, but nothing near as bright as the passenger side. sticky handbrake button Needs new front pads Engine :( Rust spot on drivers door needs sorting out (Si where did you get your respray from and how much?) New spoiler due to the paint flaking off and water leaking into the boot Heater not blowing out hot air (series 1 auto A/C control) Rear screen demister not turning on Replace passenger side internal panel due to some idiot cutting a speaker hole in it only to realise there is a wheel arch behind it New dash due to someone cutting a speaker hole in it Wiper arms either replaced or sanded down and resprayed New rear light clusters due to small cracks from age Replace steering wheel due to very badly warn New front bumper due to having a crack in it. All this is why i cant wait to get subbed too, as i can have my own journal then, want to do a lot of before and after photos, possibly some walkthroughs when i start fixing things, but one this is for sure, this car is not going to the scrappers.

God cant wait till Wednesday so i can subscribe, this no PM function is killing me, and the car gets here sometime Tuesday. Ill PM him then, and just put that engine on my watch list. Still really gutted mind you, owning the car for less then a week and have to replace the engine rather than hydraulic lifters / tappets

does anyone know who bought this car???
use photo bucket or any other picture sharing website, (though i find photo bucket better myself and easier to use) click the upload button once signed up, pick you photos, and then once uploaded it gives you the option to put a tag on your photo, i ignore this, then once at your album screen if you put your cursor over any of the pictures you have uploaded, it will give you 3 sets of codes the one you need for forum posts starts with just right click it, (it highlights the entire name for you already) and copy, then paste it into the chat box along with your message.

Found out what that tapping noise was...
Right, Wednesday this week for subscription, Wednesday next week an i got the cash for the engine, all i really need to know is, is it a sound engine from CSAAB. (Sorry to any mods about talking about it, just wanted to say the plan that's all as im not allowed to ask in the trading section) Also, as the car is going to be sitting for a bit awaiting its transplant, a few things need sorting out, so first off, i noticed the Drivers side front lights come on, but aren't very bright compared to the passenger side fronts, also when i unplug the square bulb on that side, it kills both lights, were as the passenger side one, you unplug the square bulb, the main beam stays on. Im thinking its a duff earth or might even be a corroded connector, any hints as to the area i need to be looking? And also, any one know why the Air blower doesn't kick out hot air from the front vents? and would it have something to do with the rear screen demister not working? on other cars this seems to be something to do with the ignition coil, but not sure on the ZX

Found out what that tapping noise was...
Funny thing is Si, i wanted a project car, I've spent all me cash on things Ive wanted, and just wanted a car to work on, got bored of my old one not going wrong lol There were closer and nicer / mechanically sound Zed cars, around the price i had in my pocket and we could of taken the easy way out, but then it just wouldn't of had that "personal" touch to it, im sure you understand that one, after all you have spent quite a bit on getting your Zed just how you want it. And im sure you also understand, that there is no point in owning a car like the Z with out knowing at least what everything does / where it all goes and how (in the event that something goes horribly wrong) to fix it. getting to know the car by fixing it always seems a lot more fulfilling to me, than just going out and getting a car that everything is already done on. I just didn't expect to be getting to grips with a total engine failure, lol i half expected something to go wrong due to said tapping, just not THAT wrong, oh well, i don't blame the guy who sold it, at the end of the day, car buying is a bit of Russian roulette as it is. had the head gasket go on my old Golf Mk2 GTI after 2 weeks of owning it, fixed it me self had never fixed a head gasket before in me life up until that point lol. first time i turned the key it didn't fire after putting it back together, got a tow start fired up first time, and continued there after, timing was spot on too. Well, think i shall be having to sub then, no point beating around the bush so to speak, and claim me an engine lol.

Found out what that tapping noise was...
I know its not a budget car as I've wanted one for a long time now, already had all the "how can you afford to run it" lines from everyone i know, well to them i say ^&$% off. and I've already stated cash is tight at the moment due to 2 reasons, getting the car in the first place (only got it last week and i had to collect it from the outer Hebrides), and a new baby due in 8 weeks. after that, we are fine for sorting this thing out, only problem is, we were hoping to at least having it up and running by the end of the month due to what we were told and the viewing of the car. This wasn't something that we expected, yes we knew there would be some engine work involved but not a BLOWN engine after just 18miles. a running badly engine we were prepared for, an dead engine, well i may as well of just saved the cash in going to collect it and bought the rolling shell for £400 off eBay that was 450miles closer. Si, im not having a dig, It just gets annoying when people assume that i got into this sort of thing with my eyes fully closed, might of been partially closed lol, due to the fact we had a helping video and the sound from that vid didn't sound like big ends on the way out, and apart from stripping the engine out, there was just no way to tell that it was going to go bang. I did ask on here what the tapping could be, as at the time that's exactly what it was, tapping, not hammering on metal sound, or hammer on a dust bin sound, like most con rod failures do be for they go.

aarrrggghh!, i know people say its only £20, but that £20 could go towards me new engine.... lol, but then i could save over £150 getting that one off of CSAAB, ain't going to have the cash until end of the month, so not sure he would even hold it that long.... aaarrrrggghhh!!! as stated, decisions. Only thing with subbing is, i already have the stickers and the tax disk holder lol, they came with the car.

Found out what that tapping noise was...
Anyone know if im allowed to buy from the for-sale section? as it does appear that CSAAB has an engine whole for sale, i just don't want to break any forum rules :Cry:

Found out what that tapping noise was...
Right, im going to go have a look around see what the best price i can get for a decent engine. if it comes to it, ill just wait until after new year and speak to JeffTT about one of his reconditioned ones, least he can put it for its MOT as well after, plus peace of mind that nothing untoward is going to happen 18miles down the road.

lol yeah i know what you mean, the smoke was very heavy, surprised those behind didn't crash, i got out and it looked like a small nuke had gone off down the road...

Found out what that tapping noise was...
There was a tapping, but sounded very similar to noisy tappets, not very loud at all, then all of a sudden 3 mins before the engine gave it, very loud knocking, me an the misses looked at each other, then a crunch noise, and the misses said "you best pull over" started to slow down, and just as i released the clutch, a large and very load bang / grinding noise then the engine just froze and died, followed by billowing smoke from the rear and bonnet, big trail of oil up to where i parked up. im just thanking my self that i was taking it easy rather than trying to "drive the tapping off"

tea biscuits and a bacon butty can all be arranged, just need to source an engine, if people are up for it? When it arrives on Tuesday its going strait in the garage and going up on stands so i can take the sump off and have a real look at the damage, would i be able to remove the crank with the engine in? or is that a engine out job? reason i ask, is that way i can get the pistons out and see if there is any damage to the cylinders / cylinder head. Stellaz, that tapping sound i had to start with turned into that knocking sound that is in your knocking sound video, about 3 minutes before the engine went. (though i still think the tapping was something completely different). We were really looking forward to the Z but within 18miles the dream got shattered.... :( it was going to be a small Restoration project as it is anyway, due to it not being looked after it from the last lot of owners. its not the prettiest Z, but given time it would of been stunning. just have no frigging funds till after new year due to the new arrival coming on or around the 10th of December. Don't get me wrong, we didn't go into the sale completely blind, i knew there was a tapping sound, and i knew it would require some work. there was just no knocking when i brought it, it was just tapping, had it trailered to my home, then on the way to the MOT, just to see what it was going to fail on, and give me a ruff estimate of the work to get it road worthy (it would of failed the MOT anyway due to a short in the RH Front light cluster) but at least i would of had a better idea of what needed doing, and to get a garage opinion on the tapping. ZX-TT i would really appreciate that, and yes tea and biscuits and a meal for anyone who helped, ooh and a very big thank you too.

Ive never changed an engine before, and lack the engine hoist to do it, might be able to borrow a engine hoist, but would have to check on that, and yeah id give it ago lol. the misses is adamant that she wants to get it fixed, what kind of damage am i going to be looking at? its looking like its definitely con rod failure, but i suppose it depends where the end of the rod has embedded its self, the engine just stopped very harsh from doing around 1500rpm to nothing in a split second, so not even sure if its damaged the valves or anything, im hoping that the cam belt didn't snap as this would limit the damage i would imagine. have to wait till around Tuesday before the car gets back home from the recovery people before i can get it up on stands and have a look underneath to see where the oil is coming from. So far im thinking, possible cylinder head damage, piston damage, crank shaft damage, oil sump damage.... but i could be wrong and the whole engine is just too unrecoverable.

i had a look on Zed world, the 1500 price tag is just too much this side of December, the first post was supposed to say i have a new Little one on the way, but although me head thought it, me fingers didn't type it lol.

Found out what that tapping noise was...
Well, got 18miles out of the new car, then at 60mph, the engine went bang...... Funny thing is, it didn't even sound like the bottom end, first it lost power, then there was a strange crunch noise, followed by smooth running for about 10seconds, no Check engine light, then a very load crunching noise, followed by locking of the engine loads of smoke and a trail of oil up the road. First time id driven it as well as i was on my way to the MOT. I think its the big end gone due to the fact the oil pan has a hole in it, what type of damage will i be looking at, luckily (depending how you look at it) i was slowing down to pull over after id heard the first crunch, so had my foot on the clutch. i cant afford a new engine after just paying for the car, also i have new one on the way due soon. i have about £350ish to play with, do i cut my loses and sell it as a rolling shell, or is it worth trying to fix it my self? Really gutted to be honest, i knew it needed some attention, but it really didn't sound like it was Knocking, just tapping... Nice intro to the world of the Z though.

Registering as a kit car
Seriously, do your self a favor and shop around for car insurance first, try people like quote line direct (google it get a quote). my first car was a 1.9TD Xantia, everyone else was quoting well over £1500 for the year, quote line direct did it for me for £900, had my licence for 2 weeks by this point, 6 months driving ban from 2003, 28 years old and obviously no no claims bonus. my second car was also insured with them, a year after getting the Xantia, i got a 2lt turbo pug 406 exec. £630 for the year fully comp, £250 excess OK not high performance cars i have to admit, but still large engine capacity for a new driver. beat everyone on the market. Also have a look at classic car insurance, Ive just got mine with lynbrook, but if you cant get a quote with them, try other classic car insurance companies. they don't have a no claims bonus discount thing, but they are really cheap.

More Advice please.
Right been reading loads on mods and things to do with the car but no one seems to say why it needs doing. As i have a 1991 car, what and why would i need to do this. Remove the AIV Relocating the Det sensor (not sure this even applies to me due to not having a turbo) Any other little tweaks and what not, if someone could say a list and why it would be beneficial would help a lot, still trying to get to grips with me new broom broom.

How much did you buy your zed for????
paid £500 off ebay for my 2+2 jap spec 300zx N/A, came free with the exhaust i brought, double induction kit, lowered, so far spent £1000 picking it up from the western isles just off the coast of Scotland, £50 on MOT and another £190 on tax. Should be reaching the 2k figure soon, as i need to replace the dash board due to someone cutting a hole in it to fit a speaker (directly in line with the center console) need to replace a rear panel for the same reason, and re skin the seats.
