There are indeed various ways of bedding in an engine.

?? I wasn't made aware the engine had so little miles on it since it had been built over a year ago, otherwise I would have ran it in myself. The compression test results were taken before the full-load mapping, and luckily I had put on another 50 or so for the cruise & low-load tuning prior to this. I only found out it had done about 200 miles max after I mapped it. I think after the rebuild it went to LakeZ and was subsequently parked up for months. It came to me with many more issues, but I will let Steve disclose these if he wishes.

I'd expect that the bores are glazed due to the overfuelling. What oil was used for running in?

Smokey Joe Dyno run - advice?
I was expecting to see AFRs in the low 10s or even a couple of dips into the 9s with that amount of black smoke in places. ^^This! One of the reasons why I use a single roller dyno, the VG is a torque monster :D

Different thermostats
I had two ADL Blueprint thermostats fail to open (MR2 Turbo & Toyota Soarer TT) at the specified temps. Upon inspection, it was due to the rubber sealing gasket. The Soarer thermo failed to open at all, which lead to overheating and loss of all the coolant. The MR2 thermo opened religiously at 95°C instead of 82°, similar behaviour reported by Rogue Motorsport. Impossible to tell on the stock gauge. OEM every time IMO.

Conzult
Try and get it on a dyno near you for a power run whilst they monitor the fuelling. Probably cost around £40.

Oil Recomendations
So it wouldn't be a very good idea to use diesel oil in an old VG then :D

Just done a compression test
I posted this on March 23rd: There's so much wrong with that paragraph I don't know where to begin. Sufice to say, the usual reason to abort a run at 4500 RPM is due to detonation or leaning out. A car that spins up on a dyno either has no tyres fitted, isn't strapped down properly or is running Herculean power levels. Find someone close by and get the fueling & timing/knock checked ASAP. Keep it off boost until you know what's going on. Good luck I knew this car was going to be a nightmare, from the very first time 'rageness' posted up here fishing for prices with his strange attitude: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?166631-Hey-guys-gals-New-owner-looking-for-a-bit-of-info&highlight=altia+sills, to when it was on eBay with zero reserve and the guy's subsequent temporary banning for having a bad attitude. Still running a Blitz Access ECU, or has it been tuned correctly for UK fuel? Or is this a new engine after the engine bay fire? Has it been run on the same ECU as before, or is this a compression test before firing up for the first time?

Why would you do this?
That's how most scrappies remove engines from a car. Imagine how long it'd take if they worked through carefully removing everything...

Newbie from Bristol
Hello & welcome! Nice Zed :) Was it Blue?

Oil Recomendations
I used to use Shell Helix Ultra 15w50 for the smell.

Oil Recomendations
HKS Fully Synthetic 10W45, made by Idemitsu. I use the little pink HKS oil filters, too :sailor:

TOTB XII - July 27th-28th
Right! As it stands the list is: 1. jaffa 2. will300zxtt 3. Noz 4. keano 5. Silverline I am not overly keen on entering my Zed as it won't be very competitive unless I pull the engine and fit some big turbos, and I simply haven't got the time to do that. Saying that, I'll gladly enter as long as it's part of an Official 300zx.co.uk Team as originally planned. I've not heard anything back from Dave, so will chase him up. There may be another entrant with decent power as well.

555 Chip
Yes, I can map your car no problem at all. Who are AP? Edit: I was thinking Apex Performance, but I know who you mean now :D

555 Chip
Looks like an STMicroelectronics OTP EPROM, ST27C256. As for the map that's on it, most likely The Internet. Impossible to say without analysis, either by reading the contents directly or via the Consult port.

Time Attack Round 3, Snetterton Jun 9th
I'll be there in full Team Jaffa support mode

Nice and local.
I'll be there for Time Attack, most likely in the Zed :)

F*****g pissed off!!
Foul-smelling white smoke on idle is always vapourised oil from damaged turbo oil seals. The tractor noise would have likely been an unlubricated valve-train, if a bottom end was making that noise, it would have already spun a bearing or two and been close to throwing a rod. The bearings no doubt have taken the brunt of the damage, but continued to do their job long enough.

Indeed. I've broken cars for people before, just taking a cut of everything that's sold. Works out quite well, especially as I will have someone break the car for me, all I have to do is sell the parts. Plus, the unlucky owner gets a lot more than if he had sold it outright. Lot of trust involved though  No time at all for that at the moment, too many damn cars to map :D

Big business in breaking Zeds :)
