Yeah, the 3SGTE is an incredibly strong motor. Mine had about 130k and I took it to 487bhp then 2.3bar on a T78. All that on an unopened engine with stock composite head gasket & original bearings. Even ran an 11.7s 1/4 mile with a stock Exedy clutch. "VG" is short for VG30DETT, the 300ZX engine.

I'm looking to put some major miles on the old VG in the next few weeks. So if I make it along to this meet, wouldn't mind a snoop around your little beast. What's the spec of the engine, by the way?

Well, it was far too busy on Sunday to run! So, Saturday 28th is a regular RWYB. This will be a much better proposition for a shakedown session. My setup will be changing quite drastically before TOTB if all goes to plan, but I'm interested to see what I can get out of the car as it stands. Anyone able to make this? Just to whet people's appetite, below are the results from last year. I didn't get chance to run the handling event, I only managed to get there at 12pm. Nothing to be scared about. Wouldn't do it if it caused any issues. The Zed got it 2.5 years ago: Now at 120k, 25psi, 570bhp, 24yr old bearings, perfect oil pressure, oil stays nice & clean between services. Services which are few & far between because I keep my engine in average condition for testing purposes.

Also gone for some 10W60 oil to replace the HKS 10W45. No issues as yet after a day on the dyno and a couple hundred miles on the road. Oil pressure is incredibly healthy for a 24yr old engine that's been a test-bed for the last 3 years. Respect to the VG :cool:

I've had good results with Wynn's in the past on a C20XE, known for noisy lifters. All my cars get a litre of diesel in the engine & 30 mins idling if service has been lacking. Works a treat.

Went to Santa Pod, bumped into a good pal with a Zed! £50 in the tank, 110 miles done, just under half a tank left. Not bad for nearly 600bhp!

I think getting a 2nd hand CAS to try would be the first step to take as far as replacing components is concerned. As discussed, it is important to monitor all signals when the issue is happening. AFR too to further diagnose if it's more of a mechanical issue, even if it's ultimately caused by an erroneous electrical signal. For the meantime, try & replicate the issue, jump out the car and start frantically wiggling electrical terminals :wack:

Did that produce error code 11 in your case?

It's another odd one, was absolutely perfect for the couple of hours I spent with the car. Had forgotten just how well it drives, one of my favourites. Great lambda feedback as well, which is a real rarity :wack: Sensors can go awry without throwing a code. You can unplug the MAF and it will have a 2500rpm limit. If the symptoms cease, that's the culprit. You will end up with a code afterwards though. Try to refrain from "driving through" the issue, in case the fuelling or timing is a long way off. You don't want to place the engine under load at this point.

Short notice but it's The Fast Show at Santa Pod this weekend. I'll probably be heading down in the Zed. Not been for a couple years but it's usually busy, so not ideal for dialling your car in, really.

Just need to monitor AFR when the issue is occurring as there weren't any DTCs recorded. I would have said possible CAS issue, given the backfiring.

The engine is crying out for some PowerZed wizardry truth be told. Still on the stock exhaust manifolds, throttle bodies & auto camshafts, losing a lot of power up top :( Next step before any internal work will be an AEM V2 water/meth kit to hopefully break 600fwhp before a ringland :wack:

Finally managed to finish off the mapping of my old tired stock engine. 567bhp & 501lbft. One run managed 570bhp. Still in one piece after years of abuse. :bow: New blow-through MAF setup fully configured.
