Black Z in Quedgley (Gloucester)
didnt see the wheels. it was dark and i was just looking at it thinking "i want mine back on the road" could well have had red rims. i was gonna try and keep up but that'd have been a waste of time in the diesel.

V8 Z?
hi, leigh. do you have any contacts for an engine in japan? i dont even know where to start. £500 for a more reliably, lower mileage, more powerful, more tourquey engine does seem a bit better than between £1000 and £1500 for the stock engine. even if it was the same money after import and conversion costs, there's more to show for it. any info greatfully recieved. cheers. si.

V8 Z?
if £1000 is a good price, how come most other engines arent anywhere near that? GTO and Supra lumps regularly go for £500 with the same technology and performance. i've seen the much sought after RB26DETT for £1200 so why is the (relatively) old design VG30DETT so much? most of them are between 8 and 15 yrs old now and theyre not that technological or powerful to make them really special (if they were 500bhp i could understand it). 280bhp from a 3.0-litre isnt even 100bhp/litre. honda have been getting that out of non turbo engines for years without the complexity or reliability problems. so i dont see how people can justify the price?

V8 Z?
i think thats the way i'll go. do you know where i can get a conversion plate and how much its likely to be? for now i'll prob leave it pretty much stock. i just want a good powerful engine in it that wont keep breaking and annoying me. cheers. si.

V8 Z?
bloody hell! i didnt realise everyone was going for it. whats the stance with turboing it then? just a low-pressure affair? or will i get the same gains with throttle bodies and good management?
-
V8 Z?
actual engine layout (apart from manifolds) looks quite similar to the Z. that bellhousing looks remarkably similar.

V8 Z?
biggest problem is getting it back here. he says "will ship to continental united states only" anyone know what shipping would cost?

V8 Z?
when did you decide that then?  have you got it yet? any idea how its gonna work? whats the engine out of? never knew nissan did a 4.5 V8. sounds good though. :hyper:

V8 Z?
im having trouble actually doing anything on the Z. :headvswal it seems as though they have designed it for people like me to leave well alone. i have no problem in understanding the mechanics, electricals or even the silly ammount of sensors (half of which do a useful job) but im stumped on how they work on these things. do you really have to take the engine out to check the dipstick? i know thats over the top but it really is a nightmare to get to anything engine related. i've had the thing half in bits for months now and through lack of willpower (mostly because i hate cut knuckles) i've got next to nowhere. everytime i do something on it i lose interest after the first hour of undoing a bolt thats so far out of reach its going 1thou at a time. so to the point: im sick of this engine. its not a bad engine but i fancy a change. has anyone ever heard of a Z V8? im not talking the underpowered rover all the kit car boys like. im talking about a huge muther of an engine. trouble is i dont know what i can get in. i was hoping a chevy 5.7l hemi would go in but then i heard about a long block whick, apparently will go out to 7277cc or 454ci. i know the later will probably not go in but how about the former? anyone ever done it? ever heard of it? failing that, has anyone got a spare TT engine (dont need tubs) for a reasonable sum? they all seem well over-priced (£1000 for a 10-year old engine? c'mon) any info would be very helpful. cheers. si.

Advice on buying a 300ZX
Welcome. it'll make you cry to your bank manager when it breaks (it is an older, turbo'd sports car after all) but when its working there isnt much that'll give you the same rush. even ignoring the fact that they waste imprezas like they're kids toys you get the feel of a real sports car and not a tuned road car (impreza, all hot hatches, dare i say skyline?) as it was designed as just that. other cars in the same league are things like the BMW M3 evo but they are again a big box, costly and dont give the same feeling as the Z. Things to be wary of, in my small knowledge: 1. Dodgy connectors, etc. every second post on here is cured by this. 2. Turbo's are a weak point on any older turbo car and its best to budget for replacement unless they have been done recently. 3. Accident damage. the nature of these cars means a lot of them get driven hard and some will have been crashed. 4. rust on UK models or jap cars that have been in the country for a while. same as any other car really 5. any knocks, rattles, smoke, strange noises or anything which doesnt seem quite right. as i said, these cars usually get driven hard and when something breaks it will cost a lot to fix it. 6. poor fuel economy. @17mpg on a run is the norm but considering the power on tap its not really innefficient. just powerful. i hope this little list doesnt put you off. they are deffinately no worse than any other turbo sports car of this age (Toyota Supra, RX-7, Mitsubishi GTO, etc) and are usually faster than them too. get yourself a good one and you'll have one of the best sports cars money can buy (even today-its quicker than the new 350Z) also, when you eventually get bored, there is a LOT of tuning and styling stuff out there for the Z. 500bhp is quite obtainably and some have seen quite a lot more. good luck and happy hunting. si.

Black Z in Quedgley (Gloucester)
i was just leaving Quedgley (Gloucester) the other night when i saw some nice projector lights come up behind me a bit quick. had a closer look and saw the front of a Z. i Was over the moon to see one behing and as i came round the island i booted my car (Peugeot 405 TD) and released all the 75bhp. as i did, i realised i wasnt in the Z and that being overtaken was a foregon conclusion so i gave up. it sounded like an N/A as it came past (sounded bloody nice, too) and all i saw of it after that was some lights flickering up ahead. next time i plan to be in a real car (Z) and then i may make a race of it. cheers for the reminder of how good they are though. its given me a new lease of life in getting on with putting it back togther. :headvswal

Supra vs 300zx
standard Z' shave been tested at 5.7 0-60, 14.3 1/4mile beat a washer/shimed supra turbo in a stock (ish) Z then i got mig tips. now the mk4 supras get blasted but unfortunately so did my turbos. good excuse for big ones then. HTH. si.

Decatt survey
i de-catted it at about 80,000 miles and had a little puff of smoke. ran it up to 1.1bar to see what would happen and it killed the turbo's. not just seals. the whole shaft now has about 2mm of movement in it on the left bank and about 1mm on the right. oops. it went very well while it lasted though. :o)
-
turbo lasts 300 miles
i know this is probably wrong but how about a leak in the pipe where you put the mig tips to boost it? would this not give a higher boost on one side? dunno if this is right or not.HTH. si.

MTL's mishap with a frog
 hope you like this. i guess im bored  siraff says: well i been asking around. siraff says: the general feeling is that it was a silver frog with a towbar but...... Mathew (mtl) says: lol siraff says: we believe it was the non turbo frog. we think the driver owns a nissan sunny and had borrowed this non turbo frog for the day.... siraff says: and, used to the huge power of the sunny had been dissapointed with said frog..... siraff says: therefore they had been hammering the frog all day but thought they'd go for a bit of a shop...... siraff says: after popping into boots for some viagra (obdviously got a pin) they saw a sale in the car shop..... siraff says: they proceeded over to the window in awe of such low prices and thought "i'll impress the owner of this frog by making it as fast as my sunny".... siraff says: in they went and purchased a NOS kit and some turbo's.... siraff says: now, being a little light in the trouser department had lead to this nimptie being at a loss with the ladies, tues giving him time to read lots of "how to" books and therefroe he set about fitting the turbo's and NOS with the haynes handy "just in case".... siraff says: once fitted in record time, he stood back and admired his work but the car park attendent called him over and berated him for working on his car in the car park. siraff says: in his rush to get away he forgot he now had lots of power and drove it like a sunny. this resulted in his unfortunate coming together with a really beautiful and fast car of which he had never seen the like before. siraff says: as the attendant watched he booted the frog and made his escape. the embarassed attendent was too in awe looking at the Z to notice the 'plate on the frog and so pretended not to see anything. siraff says: the happy owner of one of the best cars in the world came back to find the damage. Mathew (mtl) says: lol, that sounds correct lol siraff says: and thats where we started. Mathew (mtl) says: thats spot on! siraff says: sussed. siraff says: ok, thats my lawyer bit for today. siraff says: lol Mathew (mtl) says: lol, thats perfect! siraff says: wish i knew how to post it on the Z site. siraff says: i dunno how to get the chat logs off here. siraff says: i bet they all agree. whoever hit Mats car, :slap: whoever catches the #@'.##,

C20XE into Ecotec (sorry)
first off, sorry for posting about a vauxhall but i wouldnt if i wasnt really desperate. im putting a C20 XE into a 2.0 16v Ecotec. the XE and its loom are 1993 but the car is a 1995. problem im getting is no power to the ECU. i know there is a 2-pin multi-plug on the car (nearside by the bulkhead) but there is no plug on the loom to go to it. im having no luck on the cav forum and you lot have always been really good before. surely someone must have done it? or know a way to cure it? any ideas? im stuck. cheers. si.

Tuning bits - eng internals, turbo's, etc
dont think it was cashed but im not sure. like i said, i didnt give it a thought after that. dont matter. like i said, i'll put another in the post when she's in. lol

Tuning bits - eng internals, turbo's, etc
i tried a couple of months ago but after i sent a cheque and heard nothing more from it i havent thought any more about it. i will put another in the post whe the missus gets in.

Tuning bits - eng internals, turbo's, etc
i want the crank lightened/balanced but i also want the crank, pistons, conrods, etc matched and balanced. also i want them to run on a complete roller bearing bottom end. i have faith in roller bearings to take huge power reliably. for now im just looking around at whats possible without spending silly money. i'd like it to be a bit "old school" in terms of engine tuning/layout. big turbo/s and strengthen everything. not too bothered about all the electrickery for this and that. a lot of it is not useful anyway. like the EGR valve..... useless poo. lol
-
Tuning bits - eng internals, turbo's, etc
sounds good to me. if i have to replace every part in that engine i want it right. like i said, i havent got much money but i dont mind waiting/saving. its 13yrs old now so its lost all the money it will. might aswell have some fun.
-
Tuning bits - eng internals, turbo's, etc
well i havent really had a max spend in mind but i havent got a lot of money so if stuff gets expensive its just gonna have to take a bit longer. im happy enough to wait and pay for the right stuff. when it goes back together i want a lot of power (im thinking at least 700bhp) so if it takes time and money thats ok. not bothered about lag or fuel economy, etc. just raw power and reliability.
