540i Anyone had one?
As jadfa said I had expected mid 20's on a run. Dad had a 740i which did 24mpg over the 130k miles he had it. He has a 745i and that does 26 to 27 and has for the last 100k or so!

540i Anyone had one?
Thats what I like to hear! Yeah please mate looks nice, what sort of money would you be looking at? PM me if you like. Yeah I can imagine, its the space im after to be honest. I think the touring is still one of the best looking estates around. Especially for my limited buget! Glad to hear they were good! Cheers

540i Anyone had one?
Aye you had a 520i didnt you? I'm from a family of BMW's and ive had a couple, infact we have an E39 523i touring atm which is my mums. I was rather hoping as its getting old and a bit tatty dad would be up for replacing it and let me have it/run it for the time I need it but hes not going to go for that I think. I know thats foibles, however its had some abuse at the hands of my mother has that car. Poor thing, it was absolutly imacculate when it arrived, 60k on the clock and 4 years old it was cleaner than dads 745i which he had 9k on the clock and 12 months old! Yet now its just a dog, not a straight/unmarked panel on the poor old girl!

Sadly im really after a touring... and as E39 fans will know there was no 535i as a touring, shame really! Still what sort of age/miles/spec price are you looking at mate? Im not adverse to the idea of a 535 (its really a v8 I want!)

540i Anyone had one?
I'm fancying a 540i as a tip runner/fast cruiser/stop gap etc has anyone had one and any good/bad experience with it? I know the common issues with cooling etc and the usual typical E39 stuff... All input welcome chaps!

Cool i think he will enjoy it, he doesnt drive stuff that hard to be honest mainly rumbles about with the odd bit of straight line speed. Sounds perfect for him haha Ah right, i'll let him know hes looking at buying a nice one, full history UK model etc with a warranty and that so hopefully should be OK. Thats who it was I knew one guy had one!

dam that was cheap! Whats it like to drive?

3000gt's
That seems fairly promising, with the rate he is going through them i dont suspect it'll last much more than 6 months so he might be ok with not needing to many specialists! Hmm I had been told they were a bit dull to drive, I wish he would go and test drive one first!. Yeah I had found that one but it seemed very quiet, we had seen that buying guide cheers though. I can imagine they are a pig to work on, do you know of any specialists in the northwest or even just north incase he does need some work doing on one?

3000gt's
A friend of mine is looking at a 3000gt, i just wondered if many people on here had had one and what they thought of it. He wants a manual twin turbo with the 6 speed box. Is there anything big to look out for? I looked for a 3000gt forum but couldnt seem to find much. There was gtouk.org.uk but TBH it looked VERY quiet so wondered if there was a more active forum?

My new daily :-D
I think thats a bit of an insult to the the E36! If thats what you want then fair enough but it wouldnt be my choice sorry. Especially without the V8! Looks a clean car though it should give you many miles of trouble free motoring!

Boiler Advice
But how is that different to a conventional boiler?! lol If that breaks down I wouldnt have hot water or heating....! Apart from the log burner and kettle! I know with an electric shower. I suppose there is an immersion heater in the hot water tank but god knows if that works in this place, I wouldnt dare try it tbh! Thats very interesting, so is there a reason why I couldnt move the hot water tank into the loft? The boiler I have is old and inefficient - I also want rid of the airing cupboard, im not bothered about having a tank if I can find a new home for it. What I dont wnat to do is spend a few hundred having it moved for the boiler to fail in a couple of months and then have to replace it with a combi boiler when I may as well have just done that in the first place.

Laptop Help
It could be a fault mate, but its quite likely to be something and nothing either a reset or simply reseating the wireless network card might help, saw it on another forum after a quick google. If you like give me a call tomorrow and i'll try and guide you through resetting the bios. I'll pm you my number incase you dont have it anymore.

DId you try resetting the bios? That error is nothing to do with the hard disk, its either a physical fault or software configuration issue within the laptos own software (i.e out side of windows)

Rare? my @rse
Ohh nice, £500 breaker? LOL
-
Laptop Help
Yes - hence the conflict of system resources. However assuming the hardware is standard, resetting all to default should solve the issues as it wouldnt have come from the factory with the network cards fighting for the same IRQ ;)

On tough books or machines in general?! lol But yes loose hardware can cause all sorts of weird shit.

Any tech help before I take my van back and get stung my Merc
Does it still idle properly? Maybe making things up but sometimes vans have weird limiters on them to for example stop you flat shifting. So if it sees a neutral signal or a brake light switch or "not in gear" it might limit the power output to stop you ragging the crap out of it. But if the switch is faulty it might cause no power or very little power? I know in my astra if you try and left foot brake it takes the power away because it seems the brakes are on and thinks you are stupid...

A quick google on the subject reveals that the wireless card is often the culprit. Bizzarly removing the card and reseating it seems to be the solution... Being so tough, I wonder if people are a little rough with them and the card becomes ever so slightly dislodged perhaps? You could try that. Or failing that, if you dont need the wireless just take the card out of the machine. It wont do it any harm to not have it.

Ah, right well that conflict is an issue with either the mainboard or the configuration of the bios. Its saying two ethernet controllers, but it could mean the wireless and the "normal" ethernet card are conflicting. Just to be clear, I assume it has PCMCIA or cardbus etc as an expansion slot, is there a network card in there? Or anything else plugged into the laptop? What I would do, is press F2 to enter setup (assuming it will let you!) and then find a way of resetting the bios back to factory default and see if that does the trick. If not there may be a fault with the machine :(

Is the "good" laptop known working? Doesnt sound good if its having problems booting from a CD? Do both of them blue screen? What is the conflict message exactly, is it coming from windows or the laptops own bios?

I'm assuming what you really want is to use the 5 hard disks and have a fresh install for each of the them with different diagnostic software. I assume that the machines have an optical drive so you'll need that to install windows anyway? Boot from the CD, go through the install process and format the drive as you go through the install. If it doesnt have a built in optical drive you could always try a USB optical drive. I would say it'll probably understand that as a bootable drive. Repeat for each drive and you'll have 5drives that work with the new laptop. I suspect that the different "mk's" of the toughbook will be based around different chipsets so thats why it wont start. I wouldnt recommend swapping hard disks between machines unless they are identical, even then it can be a PITA as even with the same revision of machine there can be subtle differences.
