Narrow escape
Had to take my brother to the airport today, and i thought as its nice shall i take the zed?? But on the other hand if i take my dads Rover coupe its free fuel...... so decided to take the Rover. About 3 miles down the road im about to enter the roundabout on the A5 and...BANG, renault cleo straight up the boot, we must have shot about 10 to 15 feet onto the roundabout, i thought the rovers back end would be trashed. Got out to haver a look, a few scratches on the bumper and thats it! Dont think his cleo was too bad either, considering the slight damage to the bumper i told the lad, as its not my car, id take his details and if my dad is mad about it he'll be in touch, cant say fairer than that can you? Hope I dont wake up in the morning with a bad neck!! ;) I'm just glad it wasnt the zed, with the rover being manual i was foot on the clutch, no handbrake so when he hit us we got pushed forward, lessening any damage. If id of been in the auto zed id of been sat at that roundabout with the brake on, plus the zed bumpers not half as bendy as the rover one. Counting my blessings, tommorow ill have to try and polish the sctatches out of the rover i spose!

Dumped Coolent After Easy Drive!
Matty, if (when cold) you filled the coolant in the rad to the top then filled the expansion tank upto a bit above the max, when the water expands when it gets hot, the excess in the rad is put into the expansion tank, but if its already full, out the overflow it comes! Thats what id wager it is anyway. One tip, if you think you have an "occasional" try driving without the spash guard for a short journey then when you stop, look for leaks as it cools. You can syphon a bit of the coolant out of the tank, to cure it if thats all it is. If it turns out to be your water pump (which i dont think it is) god help you!!!! ;)

Oil level??????
Mine took about 3.8 litres, including the filter to get it to half way between min and max, which is about where i like it.

Dodgy calls, what would you do???
When I was a kid we selected a bloke at random from the phone book, and kept calling him to say he had our lawnmower, he had borrowed it and not returned it, we kept it going for about 3 years on and off, he found it quite amusing in the end!! Still, we were kids then, grown out of stuff like that now!! Seriously though if it is upsetting your mum she can let bt know, they can trace these menace calls these days.

Its Finished!!!!
At long last i have finally fitted the new water pump, themostat and water pipes, must say i do feel a great sense of achievement after suceeding at long last, on inspection of the pump it seems there was sod all wrong with it and it was just the liquid gasket that had failed, but i decided that a new one couldnt hurt anyway, like wise with the thermostat and water pipes. When I was doing it I swore I would NEVER take it apart myself again, but now im not so sure, think I might do all the belts this week!!!! (except cam belt, thats outa my leauge!) Pic of my fixed car celebrations!

We'll see, when and if i ever get it back together again!! I'm not going to rush it though, spent about 3 hours getting all the old bits of instant gasket off the faces today. Im also taking the oppurtunity to clean the underbonnet bits that i couldnt reach before.

Test a thermostat?
Forget that, im a spastic!!!!! It works, sorry nelson:p

Test a thermostat?
I am right thinking that to test a themostat, that you put it in hot water and watch it open? I thought my old one wasnt opening enough so bought a new one from nissan to be one the "safe" side. So i put the new one and the old one in hot water to see if the new one opened more...... .....but the new one didnt open at all:confused: I think that it must be a duff new thermostat, am i right?

Got that bloody pulley off!!!!!
Finally after days of struugling, and undoing every bolt on the damn car ive got that blinkin crankshaft pulley off, i can now set about changing the waterpump!!!! Hoooray. After removing the pump, it seems there is very little wrong with the pump itself, just that the seal seams to have gone around the bottom of it. But now im this far in its getting changed anyway!!! along with the stat, and hoses. Now i understand why its not cheap to get this sort of thing done at garages. However, I will feel a great sense of accomplishment when ive finished, and done it all myself. (well nearly myself, with the coahing from of quite a few of the other 300zx.co.uk members!!!) Off to nissan in the morning for two little rubber hoses for a fiver each!!

SERIOUS warning!
Chap in my street had his M3 nicked by the little shites, who broke into his house and emptied his key rack then helped themselves to his beemer. Alot of that going on these days. Silly theives, if they'd of only looked a bit further up the street they'd of found a REAL sports car!!! Key hooks are a bit of a bad idea, i keep mine in my room.

Is my water pump on it's last legs? (long story.. ;)
Eric, have you got the plastic undertray on yours, mine has and it made it very difficult for me to trace the leak as i only thought it did it from time to time, but i now believe that the tray cought the water, then if i parked on a bit of a slope a leak appeared. I decided to replace my water pump, thermostat, and them two little rubber hoses that attach to the back of the metal coolant pipes. Ive now got the pump out, and it seems there is nothing wrong with it, the only odd things i discovered is the new pump came with a gasket, wheras the old one had only been put in with liquid gasket, which appears to have come away on the lower half of the pump, thus causing a tiny leak. The only way i could see mine leak was to rev it to about 5 grand and a few squirts would come out, ticking over it didnt leak, but when i shut it off, go back to it half hour later and sometimes there would be a puddle under it. If you decide to replace stuff like the water pump and stat and those pipes, TAKE IT TO A GARAGE, its not a job for the faint hearted believe me. See pic below. And good luck!

Loud Squeaking When Breaking!!!!
Is it on the front, rear or both?? I know there are two metal shims behind each pad whih get gummed up with brake dust and crap after time, many garages dont bother to scrape most of this off. But i would describe the noise as more of a creek than a squeak. Might be worth taking them out and checking all the pins etc are in right.
