  1. Yep, Nurburgring next year is my aim. Prob in the rx7 though as it'll be better for the track. I think more than anything its made me realise the pluses and minuses of different setups. The zed would never catch the rx7 on a straight or corners but I'd be driving the rx7 with ear plugs whereas in the Zed I'd be listening to a good album at 170mph! plus nothing is better than taking the roof off. I wouldn't take the zed to a circuit again I don't think. I reckon my zed is the closest thing out there to a circuit ready zed, bar stripping it out and putting in a roll cage, but its still too heavy and too long to take round a track reguarly without spending a fortune on tyres and other maintainance. Thats not to say it isn't great to get it on track as the engine set up was perfect at castle combe, but given the choice I'd rather have the rx7. On the other hand my Zed would quite happily drive at speed across europe for thousands of miles and be very comfortable and very fast whereas the Rx7 is just stupidly fast! It's made me think about what would be the ideal combination as if you want a perfect track car you may as well go for a carterham 7, as the rx7 is still quite heavy compared. I'm quite up for keeping my zed for the daily drive and the rx7 for track and the more 'spirited' evening drives. I don't really want to run the zed through another UK winter and salted roads though. Dave
  2. Yep, just look what you are missing :    :wack: Oh and the food (was actually quite nice, but still looks ridiculous. They must have forgot to put the rest on the plate)
  3. Excuse the thread hijack but it seemed a relevent place. Does anyone know what sort of price a car trailor would go for. Obviously it would have to take a low slung performance car (zed/rx7). Also any advice on what type I should look for, and is it possible to tow with a decent car or would I need a 4*4? Thanks Dave
  4. You're welcome, its fast as feck and sticks to the road like no body's business!
  5. Heat makes a big difference mate, my 'forced induction performance tuning' book ( ) says that you lose 1% of hp for every 7 degrees increase in air temp.
  6. The only downside was that the rex was so feckin loud that I was fully brain bashed by the time I got home. I might start driving it with the exhaust baffle in all the time? its great when you are gunning it across country but was pure torture when going through town. John didn't like the car much on the first day which was more roadcraft than fast driving, as he had to shout all the time. He was loving it on the second day when we were driving fast across country.
  7. Here's a good quote from the guy who recommended John to me on the rx7 forum (fduk.org), he is a member of Johns 'Gold driving club' : http://www.john-lyon.co.uk/ He's possibly the last of the great all-round drivers, having successfully rallied and raced, taught Police drivers, special forces, chauffeurs, you name it. His demo drives alone are worth the fee. I know taking instruction is a reluctant step for many, but once I did it I didn't look back. For the price of a fairly serious mod you can open up a whole new world of driving, at least that's how it was for me. __________________
  8. Wow, what a great couple of days! I did the 'first drive' (half day) and then the first day of the 'high performance course' the next day. I went along with the mind set I was going to a first driving lesson (!) and it was deffo the right mindset! Now that I've had a day or two to let it sink in I reckon my driving has improved 200%. Its only the start and I'll be going back for more as soon as I can get the cash together. John is a breathtaking driver across open country and on circuits, he's also exceptionally safe through inhabited areas (as well as at speed). He has the engine 'singing' at all times which takes a little getting used to in these days of expensive petrol, but it makes so much sense when you see it applied properly. I'd highly recommend John to anyone, just go along willing to learn and realise you arn't a very good driver :) . He gives excellent feedback which may be a little hard for some self styled 'driving heros' to except. Personally it was exactly what I shelled out my money for and I'll be practicing hard before going back to see him for 'limit handling' in a month or two. Dave
  9. Is it possible to keep a black zed clean??? No! :)
  10. I'm very reluctant to sell but two doesnt make sense financially. My head is ringing from the noise of the rx7 over the last 2days (4inch race exhaust ). The driving was amazing though.
  11. I'm too knackered to talk about the day yet but thought I'd let you all know. I gwas talking with John Lyon about different cars today and he reckons the 300zxTT is one of the best road cars out there. Pretty good coming from one of the best High performance driving instructors in the world. I had an excellent couple of days with him and learnt loads, mostly about how bad my driving is! Dave
  12. Chopper is a member on here, and on UJCC. He had that car and sold it about a year or so ago. It was a very nice car with lots of bling and NOS etc. I think the guy who bought it had some problems but I'm not sure what they were 6k is quite a lot for an NA, even with the money thats been spent, when you consider the alternatives (mine :x:  ). Maybe chopper will come on and give us the low down ? I'll send him a pm
  13. I think peoples argument is that the back pressure helps to keep weak turbo seals intact. I don't really go for it myself but it kind of makes sense. Its common sense that de-catting helps flow better so I'd always do it. If you are considering bigger tubs it is an engine out job so its worth doing other bits at the same time.
  14. Lol, good point! Well I'm now off on a 150 odd mile drive to oxford :) Then going to see John Lyon for two days of high performance driving instruction. How about that then!! Oh and I'm going to drive FAST!!!!!
  15. That sounds pretty good mate. Would need the chip done with the boost controller though so you don't go lean. 1 bar or just over is a good safe amount that I use but theres lots of people who run higher boost on here . There's on going debate about de-catting effecting the turbo seals but if this is a problem then your turbos will die after upping the boost anyway, and you need to de-catt for the extra flow.
  16. Nicked this from another forum, I remember somebody made a paper aeroplane when I was about 6yrs old that flew over our house. I could only make the normal ones and always wanted to know how to make these funky ones! After 23yrs of searching I've finally found the answer Haha! me! Sad! Nooooo http://www.zurqui.com/crinfocus/paper/air-bld1.html
  17. I make that 1.51pence per post!
  18. Bleeding the brakes isn't that hard mate. There's good write ups on here and in the workshop manual. To improve things you can bleed at the calipers but keep the reservoir topped up with new fluid . This will bleed the system of any air and will pull the new fluid through. You will see a good improvement doing this. As long as you keep the reservoir full up you wont pull any air into the system. Its deffo worth doing.
  19. Wow! looks absolutely stunning mate. Congratulations on a lovely Zed.
  20. Just noticed : 3020 posts!!! not bad seeing as I've just renewed my subs. Not that I'm a post whore or anything.
  21. Yes they deffo need running in but should be performing well after a couple of hundred miles (although you should still go easy for at least another 2 or 3 hundred IMO). If you rag them without running in you risk warping the discs as (I'd imagine at any rate) they would get hotter in some areas than others and expand in those areas and warp. You didn't say if you bled the brakes? This can make a massive difference and should be done every couple of years or on fitting new discs/pads. It's not the answer to your original query though, davemans answer seems the most likely place to start.
  22. Doesn't sound like brake fade? brake fade is when you put your foot down and there's nothing there as the fluid has overheated. You have to pump the brake to get any stopping power. Also it would still be like it for a little while afterwards until it cools down again. Also if you have new discs and pads then the fluid should have been renewed anyhow (has it? :) ) as otherwise you wont get the most out of the new bits. I've not seen a zed get brake fade on the road with new pads/discs and fluid.
  23. And you've done a compression test and its ok?
  24. Actually, just re-read. Is it only on tickover?
  25. Have you done a compression test? My first zed was throwing out black smoke so I reconned the turbos thinking that would be the problem. Numpty here didn't do a compression test though and it did the same with the reconned turbos. Turned out I'd been running very lean due to boost jets and crap turbo gauge and had blown two pistons! Hope this isn't your problem!
