  1. OK, *NOW* I feel stupid. That's so obvious I can't believe I missed it. For some reason I was thinking it would be behind the back of the footwell same as the ECU (and was therefore dreading the hassle that would follow on from that). The only thing they haven't done to make it slightly more obvious is put a big red neon flashing arrow with the words "Fusebox here you moron!" next to it. Oh well, you live and learn. Thanks again guys. Bart
  2. Hmm... that's good to know. Cheers adef.
  3. Wow, thanks guys. I'm overwhelmed. Once I've figured out what on earth's going on I'll post again.
  4. Sorry, meant to say earlier on. Oops.
  5. Hi All, Well my stereo bizarrely died early on (couple of hours ago) so I thought I'd check the obvious stuff first (fuses). However... neither of the fuseboxes by the front wings appear to contain the relevant fuse. But apparently there's another fusebox somewhere around the drivers footwell. Question is how on earth do I get to it? Thanks, Bart
  6. I'm just about to do the same. Am flushing with the same oil I'm refilling with, but this is a bit expensive. However, it is the advice given by Oilman, and since he knows his oil I'm going to stick with that (yes, yes, I know he's got an interest in selling the stuff ;-) ). Seriously though, there *could* *possibly* be an issue with the new oil reacting with either (i) the engine flush, or (ii) the cheap oil you used to flush the engine, which could cause sedimentation or decrease the new oil's lubricant properties across its operating temperature range. That said, I'm no expert so you'd probably be better off asking somebody who is. Apologies, re-reading that it's really non-commital and unhelpful. Maybe I should go into politics (nnoooooooo). My problem is getting the darned trolley jack under the car (lots of other people seem to have had a few issues with this too). Nothing's simple with these cars (and I've hardly even begun fiddling with the thing).
  7. Hi Andy. Had a look at their website. Stupid question: can you just turn up to this on the day without registering? I'm not so bothered about entering the zed but might show my face if people are going as it's probably less than an hour away (won't be there until mid-afternoon though). Thanks, Bart
  8. That looks absolutely great. Looking forward to seeing it when the seats are done. Did you use a kit or do the whole thing from scratch?
  9. Hi mate, I sold my old car (a Renault Clio) on eBay a couple of months ago (mid April). I think the listing ended up costing me about £20 or something like that (I went for the full bifter with 9 photos, super-size photos, slideshow, featured listing and all that other stuff). I did NOT set a reserve. Just to give you an idea I'll give you a few more details on the car: - 1998 ® Renault Clio RXE (Mk III - so the new shape) - Metallic grey paint (a few scratches and stonechips, and a couple of minor dents: (i) where some yob kicked it in the rear door, pretty much sorted out, (ii) where somebody opened it into a car park pillar or something on the passenger side (I actually think this was done by a garage I took it to). - 82000 miles - Manual - 1.6 8 valve engine - 5 door - Alloy wheels with some scoring round the edges (I take MUCH better care of my zed though ;-) ) - A/C - PAS - ABS - Front electric windows - Electric sunroof (not working - common fault, and you try getting a used replacement; new they're about £400 so I never bothered) - - In the end I got £1650 for it which I was quite happy with, given the condition and mileage. TBH I was just glad to get shot of the thing because although it was a nice car to drive I'd spent about £2000 on it during the preceding 12 months (so probably nothing'll go wrong with it for ages now, but you never can tell). This is MUCH more than I would have got from a dealer, but probably a bit less than I could have got if I'd sold via autotrader or the local paper. However the advantage is of course is convenience because you know that at X date and time the car *will* be sold, which is what I needed because the longer I kept it the more money it was costing me with insurance, and the tax and MOT both coming up for renewal. I figured that whatever extra I might make in the sale I'd lose in these things. However, I would not list my zed on eBay because I know how much I'd want for it and I know it would never fetch that on eBay: there's no way I'd take less than 6k for it but I'd be surprised to get 4.5k on there. As an example somebody (one of Chunk's mates I think from looking at his website) listed a *gorgeous* pearl yellow manual TT with 42k on the clock and an Aston Martin interior and loads of mods on there wanting £9.5k for it and at the close of auction the top bid was £5.5k, which was just ridiculous. Now I don't think I would have handed over what he wanted for it, but with hindsight I wish I'd put in an offer and might have gone to £8.5 - £9k because the thing was mint (or at least looked it). Depends what you want to do really. If he knows what the car's worth and doesn't mind waiting around a bit before shifting it I'd say don't go with eBay, but if he needs a quick sale and doesn't mind waiting a bit then go for it. A few other quick pieces of advice (I'm at work): - Don't let anybody bid with negative feedback or no feedback. - If anybody puts in an offer ignore them (or reply politely but firmly in the negative) no matter how tempting it is. I had a number of people offer me sums that looked like they might be quite good (one even asked if I'd tax and MOT the car) but the final price the car fetched was MORE than any of the offers made. So let the auction run its course. - Put down as much information about the car as you can, and definitely put down basics like mileage, LHD / RHD, transmission type, engine capacity etc. Not putting down this information is a real turn-off for buyers (speaking from looking at zeds). - Make sure you use correct spelling and grammar, and don't use massive fonts or put things like (NOT Skyline, Supra) etc in the title of your listing because this is really annoying. If you have problems with spelling etc get a friend to check it over before you list. Essentially try to go for a clean, professional look, which is far more impressive than using every colour / font created by the mind of man in an attempt to grab attention. Black on white is fine. - Be completely honest about the car - if you don't the buyer is well within their rights to renage on the deal because the item is not "as described". - Publish replies to any questions you answer and ALWAYS be polite, even if the person on the other end is clearly a muppet: if you're polite but firm it will discourage timewasters and show everyone else that you're serious about the auction. - Take your time with the listing and make sure you get it right before you list. - Make sure the photos you post are large and of high quality (no blurring etc). That's about it really. I'm sure there are loads of others on here with experience of this. Sorry if I sound a bit intolerant about some things, it's only because, well basically because I am intolerant about them after spending so long searching for a zed and having to phone / email and ask for details that should have been available in the first place. ;-) Anyway, whatever your mate decides to do I hope it works out OK and he gets the price he wants for the car. Cheers, Bart P.S. I think I ended up paying somewhere between 3 and 5% of the final price in commission at the end - think it was something like £70 but can't remember TBH.
  10. Mike, what are you using for a backend database? I guess it's probably NOT SQL Server. But if it is then this might come in handy in future: http://www.red-gate.com/sql/sql_log_rescue.htm. I wrote the scripting engine and a lot of the UI for it, and an extremely bright PhD guy wrote the recovery engine. Works like a dream for most things (apart from bulk inserts which aren't properly logged). Also, if any of you other IT bods work with SQL Server this is one of those things that could save your butt if it all goes horribly wrong. There should be a video demonstration going up on the site in the next few days. Anyway, sorry, slightly shameless plug over.
  11. Check out the current issue of http://www.sniffpetrol.com/ and scroll down to the article entitled "POLICE GET AWAY WITH MORE MURDER". Possibly slightly rude, but made me chortle at any rate. :)
  12. Mine's a stock J-spec so I was a bit concerned, but it didn't go anywhere above where it normally does... that said I wasn't sitting in near-stationary traffic for long periods, which I think would be the real test.
  13. Eurgh! That's almost enough to give you motion sickness!! :))
  14. I think chunk's original is something to do with the fact that the brain perceives the magenta circles as the kind of "burn-in" effect you get when you stare at a bright light source and then look away, so it simply processes them out after a short while. I think the green dot is the result of it processing out the magenta that simply isn't there. In slightly more detail, and I fully admit this is my own hokey explanation and somebody on here is bound to know better: Light grey is basically a slightly darker version of white, in that it's composed of equal amounts of red green and blue light (on a standard monitor). To process out the magenta your brain applies a correction to the red and blue components to make the splodges look the same as the surrounding grey background. However, it does not correct the green component... hence you end up seeing a green dot where there is none, or something like that anyway. Any advances on this from anybody else?
  15. He's a pretty odd bloke and no question about it, but TBH I don't find it hard to believe that he didn't do it at all. (I'm not a fan BTW although I think he's done some good stuff.) Just because he's eccentric doesn't make him a child molester. The problem is that a lot of the media has been ramming down everybody's throats that he's guilty for so long that regardless of the evidence you can find yourself starting to believe it... but then I think (and have thought for a while) that the press in this country is totally out of control anyway: their hypocrisy is sickening, they're quite happy to shoot first and ask questions later, drag somebody's reputation through the mud (not just Michael Jackson), and ruin their lives regardless any truth. But they think it's OK because they can say "sorry" afterwards, only they're not sorry at all because (i) they don't life a finger to undo the damage they've caused, and (ii) they then go and do it all over again to someone else. (Incidentally, I freely admit that quite a few celebs actively court the press so to some extent probably deserve everything they get.)
  16. Anyone know anything about this? http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/CARS_popup.asp?modelexact=1&lid=search_used_cars_full&make=NISSAN&model=300+ZX&variant=&keywords=&min_pr=75&max_pr=10000&mileage=&agerange=&postcode=cb4+2as&miles=1500&max_records=200&source=0&photo=1&sort=5&ukcarsearch_full=SEARCH&start=10&distance=158&adcategory=CARS&channel=CARS&id=200524195955780 Think it's an NA so getting it to 175 mph may be a little optimistic (but I don't know what's been done to the engine, so maybe not), but it looks like it might be a good example. Quality of the photos isn't great though.
  17. That's absolutely stunning. No questions.

Welcome aboard! The £20 to become a full member is well worth it. I've been a member for about four months now (I think) and there are some extremely helpful people on here.
  19. Nice interior. Dunno if it belonged to anybody on here though.
  20. Yeah, I'm with cybernet: I got the heebie-jeebies just watching that. I take it you don't try picking them up with your hands then Mac?
  21. Mmm, nice skyline in the first lot of pics. TVR's not bad either.
  22. Really can't say anything that hasn't been said by everybody else. What you must be going through at the moment is unimaginable. I don't know you personally, but my thoughts and prayers, and my deepest sympathies are with you.
