  1. I'm only going to comment on the points that interest me and I know something about  We need owners that are willing to make it to events other than JAE, those willing to push their car on track, up the strip, on the dyno etc. They're more likely to do that with more recognition being given. It was disappointing not to see any other members at Cadwell showing their support. Mixing it with the Skylines & Supras will take some time & planning, they've had years of proper tuning behind them. Bear in mind that a Supra & Skyline are truly revered by all, two of the greatest cars ever made. Even the FD with its quirky little engine gets the love  The frustrating thing is knowing full well the Z32 should be up there with them, just as it is over the pond. It's a UK-specific phenomenon when it comes to the Zed's reputation & overall lack of understanding. According to Nissan back in the day, it's the best engine they ever created. If we shout it loud enough people might listen. When the cars are out there getting the times & numbers, people will really take note. Forged crank & rods as standard with a mappable ECU and torque that matches the power. Yes please!! When I hear people stating the engine is only good for 380-400bhp before grenading itself, I just put palm to face Massive respect to you for taking the time to post the suggestions, I think this is a very important thread. Having been around the Jap car scene for a long time now, moving the marque forward is long past due.
  2. Oh really, I had no idea! What ECU have you got then? Emerald? Bobgenie Slickpete Jaffa Silverline Will300zxtt John Dixon Ah. I have a special hand with an extra digit....
  3. If you require any tuning and/or dyno work, feel free to check out my forum here: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?170-Turbonoz. For Facebooking to discuss anything, see here: http://www.facebook.com/turbonoz For custom fabrication, Mr Silverline is the man to speak to: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?173-Silverline-Racing
  4. Hurry up and buy one please :D That is actually what is required. As a club/clubs/whatever, those inclined should get together and devise a plan of action to follow. Media, motorsport, services, advertising etc etc. Would probably pay off in a year or so. Every time I speak to certain people, it's exactly what we talk about. Something is required, I still can't believe how these cars are viewed in the UK amongst those that buy & modify/tune cars. The general public (ie those that will never actually buy a Z32/Supra/Skyline/FD) adore the damn things as they would a Ferrari. It's the aftermarket crowd, the ones that count, that need convincing  They need to know what can be achieved by the car, and they need to know they can get it fixed if it breaks. Sort that out, and the job is pretty much done. The businesses will come. - - - Updated - - - Of course, fellow Link brother.
  5. Everyone sees the Z32 is an unreliable untunable beast. Tuners I know will not work on them. That filters down, and people aren't interested, hence they change hands for minimal amounts and are looked upon with fear  In the US/Oz, people understand what the cars are capable of, and realise the engines are comparable with the RB & 2JZ, hence worth proper money. I've said it before and I'll say it again (whilst risking sounding like a biased record), the lack of proper tuning in the UK has been very damaging for the Z32 here. Can still count on one hand the number of Zeds with aftermarket ECUs (that I know of). Even back in the day, how many people fitted a Power FC or just went with a generic chip & boost jets / welding tips
  6. I think it's because it is all related, the point was raised in the opening post: The forums are the first port of call for new owners and potential customers of interested parties. Raising awareness of the car involves many different aspects. If a parts supplier is interested they will check out the owner's club forums to see if it's worth their while. The MKIV Supra forum has a huge amount of politics involved (lot of companies threatening to sue back in the day), but also backing from a large number of big traders as the money is obviously there. It will require a strong active userbase, and that is helped by numbers & activities promoted. It's going to take a collective effort by everyone with a solid network of well-known/respected companies & specialists working together. Most places flat-out refuse to work on the Zed due to the complexity of the car. This hurts its reputation. I'm looking to push awareness of the car up the strip & on the dyno as a viable & tunable vehicle the same as the Supras, Skylines & FDs. Drag racing in this country is increasing in poularity all the time, and Zeds do well up the strip for a big boat, getting the power down better than a Supra. They are getting more exposure from Time Attack. If TOTB goes the way it's been discussed, that could help a great deal, too. People just don't realise the potential of these cars. Supras: easy 550-600bhp on stock internals, £4k for a ropey Auto. R32/R33 GTR: 550bhp on stock internals risking #6: £5-6k. Z32: 550-600bhp on stock internals: £500 for an Auto with a broken PTU. IMO, it's all tied in together as far as parts availability is concerned. Parts supplying is not my area of expertise, however, so it is only my opinion. Who knows, maybe it just wasn't meant to be and the Zed will never get the kudos it deserves as heaped upon the Supra/Skyline/FD from the general population. I'll be damned if I'm not going to play my part, however :D Z32bolt's post shows genuine enthusiasm for the car, it's great to see :thumbup1:

There have been no official meets for an age! It can be arranged for any time really. Whenever is convenient for the largest number of people.
  8. I truly hope to be, I have had a genuine love of the Zed since it was designed. Given that it was one of the best cars released in the 80s/90s in standard guise, it should have a much better image attached to it now. I am Nissan through & through though, so very biased  Pete, Jimmer & myself were all discussing the points raised in this thread at Cadwell. With regards to regional areas & meets, I know there's been nothing suggested in the Midlands other than from members for a long time.

I'm still wanting to go karting
  10. Raising the profile of the marque is only going to start with some actual effort. Time Attack Round 1 @ Cadwell Park. Where was the support for the two Zeds off this very forum? Where was everyone? Should have been a meet at the very least. There's hopefully going to be a 300zx team at TOTB. How many will drive more than 10 miles to show support? A 300zx is cheaper to modify than an FD or Supra, and so much easier to tune without the need for an aftermarket ECU. It will decimate a high-powered Scooby/Evo after 100mph, it does well up the strip in standard guise and does well round the track with suitable suspension upgrades. We can run with the Supras in every way, the only issue is when something goes wrong, and for that to be less of an issue, we need places that can pull an engine reliably & cheaply, and a suitable option for a single turbo set up, which should really include a single-entry inlet manifold. Other than that, the only real difference is Paul Walker. These points are with regard to engine modifications & tuning, which are obviously my areas of interest. Another real problem is a bit of a sore topic and that's the fracturing of the owner's clubs to the point where you can get banned from one or the other. That is always going to be detrimental. We should be having competitions on the dyno & up the strip, and any personal issues should really be quashed IMO. The car is the star, and I think that has been forgotten in the past.
  11. Indeed, and it looks like it was worth the wait. I'm not into bodykits and the like, but I can appreciate them, and that white Zed looks stunning :)
  12. Went to Shakespeare Raceway and ran 12.74@111mph still on stock Auto turbos & 370cc injectors with a very rich map. Only casualty of the day was a windscreen washer pipe!
  13. You can do it by ear and get it spot on, in case you don't have Consult or a volt meter
  14. But you've had the ports filled on the new plenum as well though? I quite like this:
  15. Hi, your car went very well for the spec. It was indeed a labour of love for me  The drift car on Wednesday made 352bhp & 340ish lb·ft with a smokey turbo. Then that little red car made 942bhp. Not shy for a 1.8... I'll get the graphs emailed over to you next week.
  16. You still need to ensure that the cylinders receive an equal amount of air. That is the most important aspect. K3 and newer ECUs have the ability to control individual cylinder fuel trims, but it's still a good idea to make things easy for it.
  17. How come a balance bar won't be needed?
  18. I've not had to mess with the balance bar myself. It's hard to say if a 10mm Ø will have an effect without suitable testing, which is simple enough as you've got twin wideband lambda sensors IIRC. You'll be at the level where you need to know exactly what everything is doing. The most important thing is to ensure each cylinder gets the same amount of fuel & air, with equalised air being a job entrusted to the balance tube. If one turbo overboosts, can you be certain a smaller diameter balance bar is going to be suffucient on its own? Will the added restriction mean one bank runs dangerously lean for a split second in the worst case scenario? For peace of mind, given the amount of time & money spent on this, I'd want to know for sure. I would have a pre-TB balance tube, but then I love the look of it just before the TBs :)
  19. You need a full sensor readout when the problem is occurring. The AFR too. First thing I would do if nothing was glaringly obvious would be to remove the MAF & clean the wire carefully with a suitable fluid and cotton bud. I use acetone, brake cleaner will be fine. If you're bothered about your MAF having the mesh in place, it can always be reaffixed with superglue. Even if this isn't the root of the problem, a clean MAF is a happy MAF :) Although you say it's fine, it does sound like it could be a TPS issue. It should be outputting around 0.4-0.46v on idle, and the idle switch should deactivate at around 0.5-0.54v. You can usually hear a faint click as you depress the throttle very slightly, accompanied by a change in the engine note as the timing jumps from 15° at idle to 25°/40° or whatever the main timing map has been programmed to. O2 sensors OK? Rev it to 2k and the output voltage will flick backward & forward (on the gauge readout). AAC working correctly? Have you disconnected the IACV and ensured the base idle RPM is correct? Various little things first of all to ensure the car is running as it should be.
  20. Just that the idle RPM dropped a tad low a couple of times, nothing major :)
  21. All appears to be OK. You might want to just check that the base idle is set up correctly. Unplug IACV (yellow connector) and adjust the screw until idle is 650-700 RPM with no electrical load and the engine up to temp.
  22. I'm surprised at the lack of activity, given that the Midlands is such a large area. It's pretty much dead :( Ideas: Karting Dyno days Pub meets Drag meets (the car racing kind  ) Road trips (Skeg, Snowdonia and closer to home of course) Track days Anyone interested in any of the above?

  24. 15W-30 is the wrong grade of engine oil to use. Compared to a 10W-40, it's thicker when cold and thinner when hot. Bad choice.... There's absolutely no need to use a xxW-30 oil in any old turbocharged Jap engine, it's too thin when up to temp, 10W is fine for the UK temps. 10W-40 semi is good for every day use. Track use, I'd go with a 10W-50 or 15W-50. If going for a 15W-50, I'd change to a 10W-40 for winter use.
  25. The Evos had an amazing battle in the last 5 mins of the day with the NR Autosport Evo piloted by Gavin Renshaw acieving a 1:26.5 lap time. Unbelievable
