Coolant leak behind engine
No need to remove the plenum, undo the cable loom and tie it back out of your way, then a long extension will reach down. Jeff

Waterless Coolant
Looking at one of the large suppliers of waterless coolant in the US they suggest fitting a higher temp thermostat and where an electric fan is fitted raising the switch on threshold ! this sounds like the engine will run hotter !!! not good for a zed. Here a small bit from their web site, excuse the American jargon, sure you can work it out. Jeff To take full advantage of the engine running well on waterless coolant, you can make a few modifications. First, change the thermostat from your current 180 or 190 degrees to 215 degrees. Then have your engine dealer raise the fan-on temperature to 230 degrees. You can also add a ResistorPac from Evans in series with the temperature sensor. It will raise the fan-on temperature and elevate the de-rating overheat protection temperature. Check with Evans or your dealer for the correct ohm rating for your engine. If ordering a new truck, specify Evans waterless coolant, a 215 degree thermostat, and ECM programming set to provide fan-on at 230 degrees, fan-off at 217 degrees, de-rating at 235 degrees and auto-shutdown at 240 degrees

Problem with servo after Hicas lights up
Yes you could check the sensor with a meter, however the seldom fail as a simple item, there is a speed signal on the ConZult plug, try there to see if it is present there, if it is, then run a temp cable up to the speedo head from it and would make for a quick fix. Jeff

Ok I am back, so the most likely cause of the belt slap and subsequent vvt noise is an incorrectly tensioned cambelt, now this can be made worse by a noisy pulley but in 99% of cases the root cause will be the tensioner. So what goes wrong and how come it goes quiet after a while, so see the first picture below of a tensioner closed up fully, I came across this many times when changing a zed cambelt. This is usually due to been incorrectly fitted by a mech or owner who has not understood the set up procedure when replacing the belt, I will add I did one that had come from Nissan main dealer like this so dont think back street garages are the only one` to get it wrong. There is an amount of preset that is required, the reason been is the belt is a moving part and grows with acceleration and temperature albeit a small amount. The belts have a significant inbuilt stretch specification, the first and most important one is when a new belt is fitted and run up for the first time, this is manufactured in and will set the rate at which the belt performs over its lifetime, this is why you should NEVER reuse a cambelt once it has been removed even if it is low mileage, that initial stretch parameter is done and will not return. So looking at pic two the tensioner has been set with a gap just less than specified by the Nissan ( come back to that later ), this allows the adjuster to be a free floating tensioner that can not only extend out when accelerating the engine speed or as temperature of the belt rises, but just as important is when the belt is cold it has room to move in and lessen the tension accordingly but be ready to extend out as required. So now we know how it works it all starts to make sense if the tensioner is set in the fully closed position when fitting the belt it can not retract when it needs to and no longer is a floating tensioner but a solid adjuster with no give, this lack of give causes the belt to slap and the vvt cams to shudder and hence produce the noise from both the vvt pulleys and the louder noise from the belt itself. Remember I mentioned the adjuster in pic two was set below the setting recommended by Nissan? yes well that is because as you rotate the engine for the first time with a new belt on, the belt settles and the adjuster moves out to the correct position, if you set it as Nissan suggest from the start the settle position leaves the tensioner open to much. Of course a seized tensioner can have the same noise for the same reason even though it looks to be extended out from the set position, for this reason the belt MUST be removed to check. Finally, why does it go away when the engine gets warm? easy the belt grows a little when its warm and gives a little slack back to the tensioner, that is a sure sign of a tensioner set incorrectly as a seized one will still not move. Hope that helps Gio Jeff

Ok Mike that is nailed it, that is not the vvt noise it is the belt is slapping due to one of the reasons above, hang on I feel a picture thread coming on back in 5 > Jeff

Problem with servo after Hicas lights up
Yes AC is correct, I know it seems odd but there it is, if your getting nothing at A that is the speed signal input, just check you do not have a kph to mph converter connected into the loom before the plug, if not then its a loom issue to the speed sensor or the sensor itself ( less likely ) there are connections under the car by that could be the issue. Listen to the noise when the guy revs the engine, it's a more subtle spring rattle sound, the harsher sound is massive belt slap as mentioned before, maybe even a bad belt runner. Does the spring noise sound like yours? Jeff

Hi Gio, long time eh? ok I know you mention belt was done etc. but this sounds more like belt shudder to me, very rare to find vvt as bad as you mention. Has the engine been run with the covers off? Would not be surprised if the belt was flapping on the run from the adjuster to the first cam. I would investigate the tensioner not controlling the belt tension correctly, either because it's failing or more likely the set position is too small so is bottoming out and chattering the belt and passing that on to the vvt pulleys. Good luck Jeff

No incorrect, this is the very core of misconception with what the EU is about, I live as you now in another EU country that is fully integrated into it even using the Euro, however you do not see any of the silly day to day do gooders ruling the place, mostly the regulatory situation is decided locally by the Municipality of any given area not Brussels, not the EU, the UK became weak willed in Europe, and took its eye of the ball as it were, if your in and stand up for yourself like other countries do its works, the UK establishment let it self become a victim. You mention my negativity, maybe ?, but given the facts we have and the uncertainty ahead for the UK how can it be any different, talk about the blind leading the blind !! I hate the fact I feel this way, I hate the fact my country is in this situation and I hate the fact my stance viewed as negative and as an absconder from the fight to put the Great back in Britain, but I have done my 40 years of fighting thanks very much. See as a political novice I have seen so many time in my life how "Politics" will divide friends, colleagues and family, and in direct answer to your comments Chrisbasildon, yes I earned a living running a business in the UK, that business was Vat registered, tax registered, and an employer. The same business supported maybe twenty other businesses and service providers, including the local council via rates and the utility companies as well as been that employer, who in turn generated income tax payments. So to say the UK served me well for years, is at best stretching the point, at worse I would say we were working for the Government not ourselves and should be grateful for the percentage we were allowed to keep. Of course this is how a modern country operates and how it can provide an infrastructure from the steady income stream from small to medium companies, because as we all know the large corporate companies either have head offices in far off countries or just do deals with HMRC to their benefit. Now whilst the status quo continued and my business did as you suggest flourished the country changed bit by bit, slow enough to not notice but large enough to make a difference. Socially the UK has become fractured, a place full of fluffy tree hugger`s and do gooders, health and safety gone completely mad and dare I say an infrastructure buckling under a tsunami of non indigenous groups, who have been corralled straight into the benefits system and the health system without paying a single penny in, now that does grind my gears, given my comments above about my business. Chrisbasildon, I have not given up on the UK, the UK betrayed me and has us all, how did we get here I have no clear answer, do I feel in a better place in Portugal? hell yes !! is it free of its own issues ? of course not ! I still have othere property in the UK and money in the banking system whilst still paying in to the tax system, despite not using any of the reducing facilities... Brexit is the final nail in the coffin for me, I am pulling everything out now, yes the economy will recover, in time, but what about the interim period, people will loose their income and business`s will face closure due to increased costs, all of these are collateral damage of Brexit I fear for the future of the UK but I did not abandoned it, now I do consider my bolt hole in sun to be presently a better bet than the UK, which is a shame, shame on the power`s to be that allowed our great country to become so divided. Feel sorry for you guys in the UK who have been misled and lied to, this disaster in the making is a time of uncertainty and foreboding. With little in the ranking kitty of late the UK reputation is already in ruins, quite why any politician thinks this is a way forward just amuses me with their recklessness. Given the world is an ever increasingly dangerous and volatile place been part of Europe bestowed the UK with amour to take on the world basically. Now we have an armed forces that is in crisis and of a size that a small South American state would be embarrassed by. Woe betide any other country thinking we will be a good trading partners, the UK will drag them down with high prices, lack lustre performance and quality. I hate to think my country of birth is in such a mess but it is, socially it's inept and broken, financially it's pants ( except London ) and with the mass of lazy arse benefits cheats it's set to doom, now your thinking I know why Jeff moved to Portugal !!
