help with transmission change paperwork
i currently have car insured as a automatic and wish to fit a manual conversion kit. I looked at price comparisons and filled ouot a new claim with the gearbox modification option... pretty much all of the companies came back with "we do not support thsi type of mod" whats the best way of doing this? obviously i can't get away with just insuring the car as a manual so my next option is could i change the car details with DVLA or something to make it a manual car on paper thus insuring it as a manual simply? how did you lot get around this? cheers all

Woohoo!
thankyou. it was on there when i bought it but it is MG trophy blue so it's easy to find :) i will get more photos done but unfortunatly the previous owner who painted it went cheap and did not respray engine bay :( will have to do that another time as its red but another suggestion from a friend and forum member was to add white and have colours of the british flag hahahah don't think i will but atleast it was a suggestion :) will save up to spray but i guess its engine out to do so, will have to wait until i one day get engine out but might be a while now as engine is fine as is. won't fix what's not broken

Woohoo!
have had extensive tests on the car. Unfortunatley i had a broken Det sensor but apart from that i have no low compression and i also had the balance test done and every piston ran well on its own and without the need for turning on Air con to stop it from stalling (which my old car needed) and that still ran sweet. Overall the car engine (althouth dirty) is in VERY good nick. i do have twitchy injector cables that throw a piston out when just wiggling the cable so will be changing them soon for a new loom. My driver side O2 sensor is lazy at cold but once warmed up is absolutely spot on abd responsive (a sign its on its way out?) the wastegates were not piped on at all and are now,the aftermarket silicone hoses were the wrong size ( too big) which they think was giving out under full boost so i might find the originals for that too. the only thing that was wierd is i had 2 autobox warnings on the self diagnosis however when the garage done it there are now no warnings on :( luckily i have bought a manual conversion kit so i am not throwing money at the auto as its pointless. Still works so after it is out i may aswell just offer it to someone on here in a bind for emergency. Overall my wife and i are very glad because we started to think i bought a lemon this time. Luckily it was just the setups other owners previously did and to find out the engine is infact in a very good condition is a bit more pleasing. should be getting the car back soon and then ill start to do the interior and conversion aswell as cleaning the engine bay up more :) some good news atlast!!! :hyper::hyper::hyper:

Turbo query!
as far as i understand the manual tubs are bigger than the autos. The auto tubs spool up quicker to compensate for the autobox however they run out of puff sooner than the manual turbos. thats about as far as i know however other members will most likely be able to go into much further details :) could i probe into why you ask? might help even more with the replies of your query

help with transmission woes
ok here goes. i am looking to get hold of a manual conversion kit. I did see one on ebay a few weeks back but has now been sold :( i cannot find one anywhere. The other option i have is to rebuild mine... What parts would i need to rebuild it (hopefully with stronger parts) and roughly how much am i looking at to do it myself? i see Z1 sell a manual box without parts needed for around £700 delivered and £1300 with parts. do other boxes fit? i do not have room for another zed to be broken for parts otherwise i would of done so. looks like i will never find the manual box again at this rate :( any ideas peeps or how to get manual or how to repair/upgrade my autobox?

car recovery advice
i found this info in the end............................ QUESTION: I am wondering if I tow a rear wheel drive mercedesC230 on a tow dolly if I have to disconnect the drive shaft to do so. The vehicle is an automatic and I'll be towing it about 1400 miles. Thank you ANSWER: Well the Mercedes C230 comes in 2 versions... Rear wheel drive and ALL WHEEL DRIVE.. Automatic or not it would not matter if it is the ALL WHEEL DRIVE version it needs to be all the way off the ground... I would look at getting a trailer for the vehicle to be safe and to prevent any damage from happening to the transmission... Using a tow dolly on the REAR WHEEL DRIVE version, it would be best if you loaded it so that the rear wheels are on the tow dolly to prevent damage to the transmission. ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: Its a 2 wheel drive. How do I keep the front wheel straight for that long of a trip? Will the ignition lock hold the wheels in place for that long of a trip. The cost of a car carrier is twice the money as a dolly. Answer Yes the trailer costs more than the dolly, but you have to also consider if the vehicle will have enough ground clearance when in tow backwards. Not good if you are going to tear the front bumper or other parts there off... As to securing the steering wheel straight, the ignition lock is not strong enough to depend on it totally. Its hard to explain, but most tow truck drivers do use a strap (like those motorcycle tie downs) from the brake pedal bar, or a bar under the drivers seat, and wrap it around the steering wheel one or 2 times and then back to the same point it is at on the other end. Then tighten it up and you have a better securement method. And you can also use the seat belt though the wheel and then locked into place as an additional safety...

car recovery advice
the bloke lending my uncle the track does it as a business. it has the bars at the back that raise half of the car off the ground. my car is auto and so i can't hoist it from the front unless i want to disconnect the prop (which i cannot do) also the bloke who owns it said when he drops it off saturday he will put the car up on it for us so we can just drive it away. he also mentioned it should be carried from the rear

car recovery advice
car is being hoisted by the rear on a recovery truck on the weekend. Is the steering wheel lock strong enough to keep wheels straight? how else can i lock the wheel to stop it swirving?

Pesky Program !! One for the Techies
try to uninstall the driver.... i always use AC97 for onboard sound drivers... do you have onboard or dedicated sound card? as per regarding the black screen upon startup the only ones i can think about are boot options (i have them for my dual boot setup) or an error regarding system not shutting down properly. just be glad it's not a hard drive issue or a driver conflict resulting in BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH :) i fix alot of PC's and have built two of my own gameing rigs this year aswell as 9 for friends. if i get more info ill try to pinpoint your problem with more detail :)
