Am I right in thinking that there are basically 2 camps here - those that want to mod the car as much as they can afford to get the most out of it, and those that think the car as stock is hardly worth tinkering with because it took so much development that any 'tinkering/modding' will probably lead to problems/changes which you wouldn't suspect/envisage/want ?

 

MY standpoint is probably somewhere in the middle of these exteme views.

Horses for courses. I had an auto and was very happy with it. When you've got the sort of power you're getting out of a standard Z, let alone a modded one, then the power losses are pretty irrelevant.

P.S. Having had an auto though, I have to find some way of proving that autos are better. Waz - if you'd had an auto you'd have got away with 3 less engine rebuilds !

 

i have to concur old Hiary boy lol, I will only remind you of the wonders of a manual, if you remember getting on to the m25 going to the dyno day at junction 10 bet your Auto couldent do that lol.

 

Autos = Suspenders/ pipe and slippers

Manual= Brown underpants (or was that my drivig lol)

 

You're right Waz - my auto never did that - and I'd never have wanted it to. Scared the bleedin' pants off me ! You really must get some real tyres !

Don't dragsters use auto gearboxes? They can't be that bad. Also I think that a lot of repeat auto rebuilds are not done again due to it wearing out, they are done cos the owners didn't get the boxes uprated when it was being rebuilt. When I spoke to the auto transmission company about my car and the rebuild I explained the power output and future plans and they uprated the internals to cope with the power and they suggested an uprated competition vaned TC that would be provide better power delivery for drag runs but warned about it being a little harsh in town, etc so I played safe. If I hadn't advised them about my bhp etc then they would have replaced it with stock level of internals and hey presto it would not have lasted. 2pm worth of humble non-technical opinion.

Spend a long time looking for the car you really want, buy it and are happy with it (be it auto or manual)

 

Or do what I did, jump at the first bargain you find, figuring you'll be happy with an Auto, but then realise that you really can't quite master the art of driving an auto (it's harder than driving a manual imho, on twisties), and decide to convert to manual....

 

When I find the money from somewhere..

Why is it and you can go back and search on this forum over and over , that its always Auto drivers bringing up the gearbox thing ?

seems they need to prove themselves over and over?

 

2 independent experts told me it's best to buy an auto as the gearbox can cope with the power of the Z better. I cannot ascertain the validity of my assertion as to their expertise/knowledge, as I'm not that sad !!
