To Mod or Not to Mod...is that the Q. ?

Am I right in thinking that there are basically 2 camps here - those that want to mod the car as much as they can afford to get the most out of it, and those that think the car as stock is hardly worth tinkering with because it took so much development that any 'tinkering/modding' will probably lead to problems/changes which you wouldn't suspect/envisage/want ?

MY standpoint is probably somewhere in the middle of these exteme views.

Be interested to hear people's thoughts...

From what I've heard (thought this thread would get big !!)...

Manuals are faster 0-60 only if driven by a good driver.

Automatics are faster 0-100.

With a faster uprated autobox like MAC has, I bet he beats manuals with good drivers 0-60 ;-)

Bingo Dave! biggrin.gif wink.gif

I raced a rumoured 550 bhp manual Cossie and I don't remember my car running out of puff at 120! I think it was the other way round. wink.gif

Yeah, the I've heard that the autos are actually geared for higher top speeds than the manuals.

Thats right get an auto to the red in top,and you are doing over 200mph,check it out on the Andyp site.

also a man will not do an auto in 0-60

KEEP IT SIDEWAYS;).

Q. Is there anything manuals are good for on a Z???

A. NO! They are slower, gears crunch, clutches for high powered cars cost 5 bars of gold bullion and last for about 5 minutes and are so heavy you need a left leg off a Massive Roy to depress them! Costs money in getting flywheels skimmed and stock clutch gives up on adding an intake, zorst, chip and boost upgrade. Why bother with an auto to manual perversion??? ROFL biggrin.gif

P.S. and they need bleeding quite frequently evidently! biggrin.gif

yeah but us manual owners don't feel the need to keep defending our decision on transmission.

if you like what you drive good for you, if not get something else.

lol! i love it! biggrin.gif

the way i see it is that the most famous car on the forum is an auto, the copy is also an auto, the 1/4 mile king has an auto, etc.. They cant be bad then!

Floor an auto and it will do the same every single time, a manual sometimes you get ti spot on and you will do a 0-60 in the same time as an auto, but most of the time you wont...

also an auto is great in traffic, no faffing with clutches, just one pedal needs to be used to make it crawl along and to stop it. Perfect for the lazy lot! But if you like manual boxes then great, whatever floats your boat, it what you like, why should I argue autos are better, its obvious theres very few poeple who will say an auto is better than manual and vice versa, so why argue!!??

If your car is an everyday driver then an auto is probably a good idea. However,if your 300ZX is a weekend toy, then get a manual and enjoy the struggle of "man against machine" in the true sports car sense. wink.gif

I like the stealth aspect of the auto.

When you're about to nail it in a manwell you tend to drop down harshly before opening up.

Guy can see you do this if you're rolling and he's behind you or in front of you watching in his rear view.

When you knock the O/D off the revs blip up but nowt much else gives the game away until you floor it! Woooo hooooooooooo. biggrin.gif

Plus I see the O/D button as the last resort...break glass ONLY in emergency type scenario.

E.G. when you're facing a slammed sapphire cossie and you're on your own and he's got his chick in the car with him! He has more to lose than you, and he did. ROFL biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

So you're not gonna get than auto to manwell conversion then, Timmy bud ?!!!

The thing that mildly irritates me, is all the people who upon hearing you have an auto think and usually say "I'd rather have a manual, as they're quicker" or "for a sports car, it's got to be a manual!!"

The thing is, they each have advantages and disadvantages, AND, the way most people drive their manuals(not talking 300's here), I bet they would be better off with an auto.

They assume that a manual has inherent advantages, but it depends how you drive and it's still not necessarily better !

Manwell addicts also think that it's somehow sissy to not be "in control" of the gear changes, but a car is a tool. You can control gear changes in an auto with your right foot and the O/D button, granted not as well as a manual. If you want to totally be in control of the car, get rid of HICAS, ABS, Power steering. OR better still, buy a small kit car !! OR to be more "in control" get out your car and walk !!

The utopian ideal transmission is that used in F1 which is semi-automatic. It's also likely that future transmissions will be of a continuously variable nature, so that the car is always in the optimum gear.

Just refresh my memory, the 265mph Jun speed record car. Was that Auto or Manual??

LMAO!! 1200+hp would just boil that auto fluid to tar. Then the autobox could return to whence it came, a tar pit!!

Robert.

I only use the brakes so I can accelerate all over again.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/dunk300zx/ For awesome car & bike mpegs.

I don't think the JUN car had a stock manual box, so comparison in invalid. It would be manual because it would be a little lighter and there would be less power losses in the drivetrain.

Stock autoboxes are stronger than stock manual boxes, so there !! :-P

but on what do you base that information?

you would replace an auto box a long time before you replace a manual box with over 450 bhp period.

Most of what is said about autoboxes being crap is not true. However, I have to agree with Waz - the stock manual box will take more bhp than the stock auto box.

The clutch is a different story ...

Horses for courses. I had an auto and was very happy with it. When you've got the sort of power you're getting out of a standard Z, let alone a modded one, then the power losses are pretty irrelevant.

Dave

P.S. Having had an auto though, I have to find some way of proving that autos are better. Waz - if you'd had an auto you'd have got away with 3 less engine rebuilds wink.gif !

Right, where's my blow torch??? I must flame this biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

BOLLOX biggrin.gif hehe the auto box is FAR weaker in comparison to the manual box FACT!!! Just do a search on auto or something - find how many people have asked for auto recon works wink.gif Bleeding?? this is a one off where there is some air stuck in the system...

Lets look at it another way. Yes an uprated clutch is required on a manual for anything much over stock power. HOWEVER for an auto, first you must rebuild it after 5k miles (£1000ish) then you need an ALC (£200ish) also an uprated oil cooler (£100) also an uprated torque convertor (£god knows ask him) the list goes on......

Hmmmmmm so £500 on an uprated clutch aint so bad after all eh wink.gif

Bring me some more I'm hungry biggrin.gif

CheerZ,

Andy
