To Mod or Not to Mod...is that the Q. ?

Am I right in thinking that there are basically 2 camps here - those that want to mod the car as much as they can afford to get the most out of it, and those that think the car as stock is hardly worth tinkering with because it took so much development that any 'tinkering/modding' will probably lead to problems/changes which you wouldn't suspect/envisage/want ?

MY standpoint is probably somewhere in the middle of these exteme views.

Be interested to hear people's thoughts...

Smile everyone! wink.gif

for your information i happened to have covered more milage between rebuilds than the mclaren f1 race car, so there biggrin.gif now it sounds pretty reliable eh wink.gif

but at least it was 7500 miles in a manual bwhahahahaha and thats 7500 more than id like to cover in an automatic biggrin.gif

I think most people want their transmission to be the best. It's a bit like who's got the biggest **** !

BOLLOX biggrin.gif hehe the auto box is FAR weaker in comparison to the manual box FACT!!! Just do a search on auto or something - find how many people have asked for auto recon works wink.gif Bleeding?? this is a one off where there is some air stuck in the system...

Lets look at it another way. Yes an uprated clutch is required on a manual for anything much over stock power. HOWEVER for an auto, first you must rebuild it after 5k miles (£1000ish) then you need an ALC (£200ish) also an uprated oil cooler (£100) also an uprated torque convertor (£god knows ask him) the list goes on......

Hmmmmmm so £500 on an uprated clutch aint so bad after all eh wink.gif

Bring me some more I'm hungry biggrin.gif

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA You can't even aford a new clutch Duffscruff, you should have bought an auto after all tongue.gif

Ok Guys, being one of the people who converted my car from auto to manual (out of neccesity I might add as autobox no.2 went Tits up)

As a manual it is MUCH faster not by a couple of car lengths, but by whole football fields biggrin.gif .

As an Auto (which I bought because I preferred powerful autos) I regularly got hammered by M3s, scoobies and the like. As a manual the 300 destroys all of the above.

These are just my experiences, although B12 Andy will also agree I'm sure.

Cheers,

B

Getting a nice uprated 6 puc ACT Clutch this week for my manual. That should allow me to rev it to 5000 rpm and drop the clutch and catapult me into a nice brick wall tongue.gif, also should take 0.5 second of my quarter mile, as I won't get any clutch slip.

What revs can put on an auto while holding the brake before launching? whould you need a higher stall torque converter for higher rev launches?

The stall speed of the stock convertor is about 2500rpm from memory, above that you risk stalling the car, and knackering the convertor.

You'd need an aftermarket convertor (Level-10, say) for a higher stall speed (NitroPow had a 3000rpm one, took 0.5 off his 1/4 mile if I recall)

Or you could get a line lock and lock off the front brakes to spin it off the line, but that might take some doing I think..

Oh and if I recall, a manual will take off faster if you slip the clutch (from the days of driving my R5GTT).. It's just your clutch won't last too long!

Recieved my clutch from Stillen today.

The clutch looks the mutts nuts, proper 6 puc job! full rpm burnouts on the way folks biggrin.gif

Oh yeah I forgot in the best tradition of this forum, Manuals rule! Autos Suck, and I have 6ft long knob. And I'm sure my HKS sticker had added an extra 1500bhp.

Mwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaahhhhh biggrin.gif

whoops I nearly forgot another thing.

Exhaust Wrap

Stonger internals

If we are talking 5000+hp Top Fuel dragsters, then no, they don't use auto gearboxes. They use a series of clutches, maybe 6 or so. Off the line, clutch 1 locks up, but can't cope with 5000hp on it's own so it slips a bit. This is good because it prevents wheels from spinning. Next, clutch 2 comes in as well as 1 and gives a bit more grip. Then clutch 3,2 and 1 are engaged. Repeat until all 6 clutches are locked up and you sail past the 1/4 mile in

I'm not sure any kind of motorsport uses automatic transmision. Far too much efficiency losses to be used in competition.

Actually, tell a lie, I saw an auto being used in competition once, I think it was in the finals of Scrapheap Challenge!! Buchered a Ford V6 engine if I remember LOL. wink.gif wink.gif
